Description : Juliana Spahr writes: "Birds with extremely long necks. Cassiopeia. A sister. A Marco Polo. A somnambulist. A documentary on the voyages of Columbus. A cartographer. Star charts. Young intellectuals in black robes. Jean-Michel Basquiat. More birds and still more birds. A mathematician. All these things appear in The To Sound’s beautifully warped cosmology. This is a stunning book that builds its own world, a world of ambiguous relations and loaded words; a lyrical world that explores the unstated connections between things. . . ."

Description : Little magazines have often showcased the best new writing in America. Historically, these idiosyncratic, small-circulation outlets have served the dual functions of representing the avant-garde of literary expression while also helping many emerging writers become established authors. Although changing technology and the increasingly harsh financial realities of publishing over the past three decades would seem to have pushed little magazines to the brink of extinction, their story is far more complicated. In this collection, Ian Morris and Joanne Diaz gather the reflections of twenty-three prominent editors whose little magazines have flourished over the past thirty-five years. Highlighting the creativity and innovation driving this diverse and still vital medium, contributors offer insights into how their publications sometimes succeeded, sometimes reluctantly folded, but mostly how they evolved and persevered. Other topics discussed include the role of little magazines in promoting the work and concerns of minority and women writers, the place of universities in supporting and shaping little magazines, and the online and offline future of these publications. Selected contributors Betsy Sussler, BOMB; Lee Gutkind, Creative Nonfiction; Bruce Andrews, L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E; Dave Eggers, McSweeney’s; Keith Gessen, n+1; Don Share, Poetry; Jane Friedman, VQR; Amy Hoffman, Women’s Review of Books; and more.

Description : The papers in this volume focus on the impact of information structure on language acquisition, thereby taking different linguistic approaches into account. They start from an empirical point of view, and examine data from natural first and second language acquisition, which cover a wide range of varieties, from early learner language to native speaker production and from gesture to Creole prototypes. The central theme is the interplay between principles of information structure and linguistic structure and its impact on the functioning and development of the learner's system. The papers examine language-internal explanatory factors and in particular the communicative and structural forces that push and shape the acquisition process, and its outcome. On the theoretical level, the approach adopted appeals both to formal and communicative constraints on a learner’s language in use. Two empirical domains provide a 'testing ground' for the respective weight of grammatical versus functional determinants in the acquisition process: (1) the expression of finiteness and scope relations at the utterance level and (2) the expression of anaphoric relations at the discourse level.

Description : Principles for constructing intelligent systems Design of Logic-based Intelligent Systems develops principles and methods for constructing intelligent systems for complex tasks that are readily done by humans but are difficult for machines. Current Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches rely on various constructs and methods (production rules, neural nets, support vector machines, fuzzy logic, Bayesian networks, etc.). In contrast, this book uses an extension of propositional logic that treats all aspects of intelligent systems in a unified and mathematically compatible manner. Topics include: * Levels of thinking and logic * Special cases: expert systems and intelligent agents * Formulating and solving logic systems * Reasoning under uncertainty * Learning logic formulas from data * Nonmonotonic and incomplete reasoning * Question-and-answer processes * Intelligent systems that construct intelligent systems Design of Logic-based Intelligent Systems is both a handbook for the AI practitioner and a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on intelligent systems. Included are more than forty algorithms, and numerous examples and exercises. The purchaser of the book may obtain an accompanying software package (Leibniz System) free of charge via the internet at leibnizsystem.com.
