Description : This two-part commentary argues that Chronicles, placed as it is among the 'historical books' in the traditional Old Testament of the Christian church, is much misunderstood. Restored to its proper position as the final book in the canon as arranged in the order of the Hebrew Bible, it is rather to be understood as a work of theology essentially directed towards the future. The Chronicler begins his work with the problem facing the whole human race in Adam-the forfeiture of the ideal of perfect oneness with God's purpose. He explores the possibility of the restoration of that ideal through Israel's place at the centre of the world of the nations. This portrayal reaches its climax in an idealized presentation of the reign of Solomon, in which all the rulers of the earth, including most famously the Queen of Sheba, bring their tribute in acknowledgment of Israel's status (Volume 1). As subsequent history only too clearly shows, however, the Chronicler argues (Volume 2), that Israel itself, through unfaithfulness to Torah, has forfeited its right to possession of its land and is cast adrift among these same nations of the world. But the Chronicler's message is one of hope. By a radical transformation of the chronology of Israel's past into theological terms, the generation whom the Chronicler addresses becomes the fiftieth since Adam. It is the generation to whom the jubilee of return to the land through a perfectly enabled obedience to Torah, and thus the restoration of the primal ideal of the human race, is announced.

Description : 1 & 2 Chronicles paints the best picture it can of the nation of Israel and the rise and fall of the kings. Many times the authors use yellows to brighten up the message, giving the impression of sunny days. However, the backgrounds skew towards dark black, as sinful leaders cloud Israel's future and eventually witness its downfall.1 Chronicles begins with nine chapters of genealogies, listing everyone from kings to gatekeepers. While the exercise feels tiresome and unnecessary, it reveals the goal of 1 & 2 Chronicles-to record the legacy of the Israel. One wonders if the writers weren't nervous about Israel's future and felt they needed a detailed record of its history, similar to how one writes an obituary, highlighting only the good parts. Take David, for example, unlike 2 Samuel which exposed all of David's sins, 1 Chronicles references some faults but skips over his major sins. While 1 & 2 Kings unveils the nitty-gritty history of Israel, 1 & 2 Chronicles gives a loving tribute to the nation, preferring the victories over the failures, but inevitably it must share the truth as this nation falls.PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIESWhat is God's word? Simply put, it is the word of God spoken to people long ago who transcribed that information into writing. That writing was meticulously passed down for thousands of years to speak to us today. How did God speak to people in Bible times? -Audibly - God spoke directly to people who heard him with their ears or in their heart.-Through situations - God spoke through the actions and events of this world.-Through people - God spoke through leaders, kings and prophets who proclaimed God's purpose.-Through prophecy - God spoke about future events, then those events happened.-Scripture - God spoke through his written word when people read those words later.-Prayer - God spoke through the prayers of people.PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIES recognizes the power of God speaking to mankind through His Scriptures. God's word was not only meant to be read, but applied. We must apply ourselves to these passages and adjust our lives to God's will.Today, God uses many ways to speak to us. This book incorporates those avenues of communication to ensure that God will speak to you during your quiet time with Him.Each section asks the reader to do six things.1.Read the passage. Open up the Bible and read His Word.2.Memorize the passage. A certain verse is given special focus. Commit it to memory. Remember it all day.3.Understand the passage. Background information (Time, Characters, Place, What's Happening) help you to understand the context of the section you are reading.4.Read the prayer. Read the written prayer as if it is from your heart. Don't recite them as words from a page, but a plea from your soul.5.Keep praying. Prayer prompts are there to help you continue praying about other specific areas. Listen to the Holy Spirit and see if there is more you need to pray.6.Journal your thoughts. In the space provided, write down some thoughts that you feel God said to your during this time. Every five sections I've included a "Prayer Thoughts" page to give you more room to journal your thoughts and write down prayer requests as you go through the Bible.Get ready to spend some quality time with God.Get ready for God to speak to you through His Word.

Description : This book is volume 11 of The forms of the Old Testament literature, a 24-volume series that aims to present a form-critical analysis of every book and each unit in the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible). In his introduction De Vries sketches the canonical setting of the books of Chronicles, especially their relation with Ezra-Nehemiah, and then discusses the redacted and original versions of Chronicles. He describes Chronicles as genealogical and narrative history that tells who ideal Israel is, how it has suffered by its unfaithfulness, and how it will remain true Israel by trusting in God. Following the series format throughout his work, De Vries offers an analysis of the structure, genre, setting, and intention of each section of the biblical text. Bibliographies guide the reader to further discussion; a glossary of formulas and genres concludes the volume. - Back cover.

Description : The church fathers, as they did in earlier books dealing with Israel's history from the time of Joshua to the united monarchy, found ample material for typological and moral interpretation in 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther. As will be immediately clear to readers of this volume, they gave much more attention to 1-2 Kings than to any of the other books addressed here; whether this was due to a certain repetitiveness in the story line or other reasons is unclear. But the narratives of wise King Solomon, the construction of the temple, the prophets Elijah and Elisha, and the fates of various faithful and unfaithful kings and other powerful people were well suited to their purposes. Among Greek commentators in this collection, readers will find Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Methodius, Eusebius of Caesarea, Athanasius, Cyril of Jerusalem, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, John Chrysostom, Cyril of Alexandria, Theodoret of Cyr, Procopius of Gaza and John the Monk. Among Latin commentators are Tertullian, Cyprian, Novatian, Lactantius, Ambrose, Jerome, Prudentius, Augustine, Paulinus of Nola, John Cassian, Peter Chrysologus, Maximus of Turin, Salvian the Presbyter, Fulgentius of Ruspe, Caesarius of Arles, Gregory the Great, Bede and Rabanus Maurus. Syriac commentators include Aphrahat, Ephrem, Sahdona, Isaac of Nineveh and Isho'dad of Merv. Together they set before readers a table of delights and theological insights, some of which are here available to English readers for the first time.

Description : Purity, worship, obedience, and hope: 1 & 2 Chronicles called the early Hebrew people to faithful practice of these things, and they issue the same call to readers today. As August H. Konkel writes in the 30th commentary in the Believers Church Bible Commentary series, the Chronicler provided a unifying vision of the community’s rich traditions in an era of despondency and apathy. Exile had robbed the people of Israel of their wealth, and their return to the land of Judah had created resentment with the surrounding peoples. Struggling to maintain their faith amid intense social pressures, the Hebrew people needed to look to their past for lessons for the present. As two of the most overlooked books in the Christian canon, 1 & 2 Chronicles are exemplary resources for those who seek to be the people of God today. 1 & 2 Chronicles is the thirtieth volume in The Believers Church Bible Commentary Series. Accessible to lay readers, useful in preaching and pastoral care, helpful for Bible study groups and Sunday school teachers, and academically sound, the commentary foregrounds an Anabaptist reading of Scripture. Relying on a unique format that includes sections on The Text in Biblical Context and The Text in the Life of the Church, the commentary series is a cooperative project of Brethren in Christ Church, Brethren Church, Church of the Brethren, Mennonite Brethren Church, Mennonite Church Canada, and Mennonite Church USA. Published for all who seek more fully to understand the original message of Scripture and its meaning for today, the series is based on the conviction that God is still speaking to all who will listen, and that the Holy Spirit makes the Word a living and authoritative guide for all who want to know and do God's will.

Description : The Chronicles are more than a history of ancient Israel under the ascent and rule of the Davidic dynasty. They are a story whose grand theme is hope. Great battles are fought, heroes and tyrants vie for power, Israel splits into rival kingdoms, and the soul of God’s holy nation oscillates between faithlessness and revival. Yet above this tossing sea of human events, God’s covenant promises reign untroubled and supreme. First and Second Chronicles are a narrative steeped in the best and worst of the human heart—but they are also a revelation of Yahweh at work, forwarding his purposes in the midst of fallible people. God has a plan to which he is committed. Today, as then, God redirects our vision from our circumstances in this turbulent world to the surety of his kingdom, and to himself as our source of confidence and peace. Exploring the links between the Bible and our own times, Andrew E. Hill shares perspectives on 1 and 2 Chronicles that reveal ageless truths for our twenty-first-century lives. Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. They focus on the original meaning of the passage but don’t discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable—but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together. This unique, award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our postmodern context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it speaks powerfully today.

Description : The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

Description : In this book, Louis C. Jonker considers more sophisticated and nuanced models for applying the heuristic lens of "identity" in the interpretation of the Hebrew Bible book of Chronicles. Not only does he investigate the potential and limitations of different sociological models for this purpose, but the author also provides a more nuanced analysis of the socio-historical context of origin of late Persian-period biblical literature by distinguishing between four levels of socio-historic existence in this period. It is shown that varying power relations were in operation on these different levels which contributed to a multi-levelled process of identity negotiation. Louis C. Jonker shows the value of the chosen methodological approach in his analysis of Chronicles, but also suggests that it holds potential for the investigation of other Hebrew Bible corpora.

Description : "Then David said to the Philistine, 'You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts.'" (1 Samuel 17:45) Reflecting upon David's victory over Goliath, Reformation translator, theologian and commentator William Tyndale compared it to Christ's victory over sin and death: "When David had killed Goliath the giant, glad tidings came to the Israelites that their fearful and cruel enemy was dead and that they were delivered out of all danger. For this gladness, they sang, danced and were joyful. In like manner, the good news or 'gospel' of God is joyful tidings." The books of 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings and 1-2 Chronicles, which record the history of Israel from the prophetic ministry of Samuel to the fall of Jerusalem, provided the reformers with some of the best-known narratives of the Old Testament upon which to comment, including Hannah's prayer, the anointing of Saul as Israel's first king, David's triumph over Goliath and his later adultery with Bathsheba, Solomon's building of the Temple, Elijah's challenge to the prophets of Baal, and the healing of Naaman. For the reformers, these stories were not merely ancient Israelite history, but they also foreshadowed the coming of Jesus Christ, and they had immediate relevance for their lives and the church of their day. Thus, Anglican exegete John Mayer perceived within King Josiah's reform of Israelite worship after the discovery of the Book of the Law a prefiguration of "what should be done in the latter days of the gospel, in which a greater reformation of the religion is now being made." In this Reformation Commentary on Scripture volume, Derek Cooper and Martin Lohrmann guide readers through a diversity of Reformation commentary on these historical books. Here, readers will find reflections from both well-known voices and lesser-known figures from a variety of confessional traditions—Lutherans, Reformed, Radicals, Anglicans and Roman Catholics—many of which appear in English for the first time. By drawing upon a variety of resources—including commentaries, sermons, treatises and confessions—this volume will enable scholars and students to understand better the depth and breadth of Reformation-era insights on Scripture. It will also provide resources for contemporary preachers, and encourage all those who continually seek to share the "joyful tidings" of Jesus Christ.

Description : "Oh, how I love your law. Your statutes are my heritage for ever; they are the joy of my heart ..." Psalm 119:97 - 111 "At their best," writes Don Carson, "Christians have saturated themselves in the Word of God." The means by which God sanctifies men and women, setting them apart as his own people, is the Word of truth. Many people, however, would admit that they have allowed the pressures of life to crowd out serious and thoughtful reading of the Bible. Also, in a culture that has moved away from a Christian worldview, the Bible's unwavering proclamations and fantastic stories seem ever stranger. The big picture of the Bible is gradually fading from view. For the Love of God encourages us to face these challenges. Now, more than ever, the need to read the Bible and to grasp its relevance for our lives is critical. This companion volume to 'For the Love of God - Vol. 1', follows Robert Murray M'Cheyne's Bible-reading plan, taking you through the New Testament and Psalms twice and the Old Testament once. Don Carson has written thought-provoking comments and reflections to accompany one of each day's scriptural passages. And, most uniquely, he offers a perspective that places each reading into the larger framework of history and God's eternal plan, in order to deepen our understanding of his sovereignty and the unity and power of his Word.

Description : The main reason we are here on earth is to give God pleasure. Revelation 4.11 says, "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou has created all things, AND FOR THY PLEASURE THEY ARE AND WERE CREATED" The very breath that we breathe, belongs to HIM, so we need to give it back to HIM. David says in Psalm 34.1: "I will bless the Lord at all times; HIS praise shall continually be in my mouth" And even as an ageing king in Psalm 71, he writes: "My mouth is filled with your praise, declaring your splendor all day long…I will praise you more and more" It is our only opportunity to give HIM the only food He enjoys- Praise and Worship- and this is the only thing you and I would be doing in heaven (no winning souls, no helping poor etc). So we may as well start now. And if we don't give HIM our praise, GOD says that HE would get the rocks to do it (How shameful- we who have HIS breath!) But why is praising God so difficult? Simply put, praise does not come naturally to most of us. We have to learn to praise. The very first reason I believe why we find it difficult is because we are just not accustomed to praising others, leave alone God. The second reason is that praise requires us to set ourselves aside and keep and think of God first- after all it is because of Him and for Him we live. And the third reason is that, in order to start praising, we need to change our pattern of life. We must take time to focus on God and His attributes. Therefore praising the Lord is not some kind of casual meaningless activity. Now what can praising God do to you? Praising God has the power to change our lives. Praise takes our mind off our own selves and helps us see who God is. It transforms the perspective from which we approach life and places us in the context of who God is. Praise helps us recognize God and His ability to impact our lives, and reminds us that He loves us and is deeply involved in every detail of our daily living. And here is something that can stir you up to praise HIM more. Psalm 67:3, 5, 6 says: "Let the people praise Thee, O God; Let all the people praise Thee. Then shall the earth yield her increase, and GOD, even our own GOD, shall bless us”. Note the word 'then' in vs. 6. Most times we want God to bless us, then, we would think of possibly praising HIM. But see what vs. 6 says, "THEN". In other words, you start praising HIM first in faith, even before you've received anything and THEN see HIM pour out HIS blessings, because GOD dwells in the midst of praise (Psalm 22.3). So I pray that this small but powerful book: ‘Raise your Praise all 365 Days’ will help you do just that. You will find 366 bible verses exclusively on praising God- one for every day of the year, including one for a leap year. You could use it as an everyday tool, by reading that day’s verse and reflecting on God’s Goodness, Greatness, Glory, Grace and His Gifts that He has blessed you with and all that you see around you- or you could just decide to use it completing all the 366 verses at one go. I pray that this will be a blessing to you in your times of private worship.

Description : What is a "Study Bible"? Is it a Bible version with lots of pretty pictures and side stories that distracts you from what the Bible is actually saying and what it means? Or is it a Bible version that will actually help you to understand what the Bible is saying and truly means? I submit to you that the Kingdom Study Bible Version is the only true Study Bible, because it is the latter rather than the former. If you want to learn about those things in the pretty pictures and sidebars, I believe that you would be much better served by investing in other Bible tools that are already available: Hebrew and Greek grammars, concordances, Biblical Backgrounds, etc. But you cannot combine all of those tools in a Bible, because what you end up with is something that distracts your attention from the Bible onto other things. The headings of the Kingdom Study Bible are the themes of the Divisions, Volumes, Books, Parts, Chapters, Sections, Paragraphs, and Subparagraphs. This is one of the keys to understanding how this Bible version is arranged. The Bible has its own high-level outline; every Volume has its own outline; every Book has its own outline; and every Chapter has its own outline. The Kingdom Study Bible has approximately 306 outlines, of every part of the Bible! No other study bible even comes close. And, unlike all other Bible versions and arrangements, these outlines show the true and correct outline of those Volumes, Books, and Chapters (including their internal subdivisions). How does it do it? Through the only true and correct arrangement of the Bible that is guided by the Golden Ratio design. This arrangement is brand new to us; but it has always been there in the Scriptures, because God put it there. This requires some explanation to understand, so you must read the Preface of the Kingdom Study Bible as a starting point. I have also provided a wealth of Bible studies on my website at https://www.phibible.org/info/GoldenRatioBibleStudies/EnglishStudiesMenu.html to help you understand how it works and why it came from the Lord. The Golden Ratio design is not the Gospel! It is like the fingerprints of God upon his Word, that demonstrate his perfect, guiding hand upon the original human writers of the Bible text in such a way that the inspiration of the Holy Scriptures cannot be denied. And no other Bible version comes even close in the quality of their outlines, since those other outlines are typically very general and are not the true themes of the Bible text. A proper theme is the content of a Bible portion that is "boiled down" into a single sentence, that gives an accurate summary of what that Bible portion actually teaches. This is where the Kingdom Study Bible really shines, and where the other study bibles fall short. There is much more than I have space for here: see https://www.phibible.org for more information.
