Description : "Written by architecture critic Kenneth Powell, 30 St Mary Axe: A Tower for London tells the story of the genesis, design development, construction and public reception of one of the world's most intelligently conceived and imaginatively designed buildings. Each stage of the design process is described in detail, from the first sketches and models to the creation of the spiralling atria, which allow for natural ventilation, and the unique steel diagrid, which provides column-free internal spaces. This is followed by a photographic essay illustrating the key phases on site, from the day construction started to the moment the lens was lifted into place." "The book concludes by drawing together the critical response to 30 St Mary Axe, its prolific use in graphics, advertising and films as an emblem of London, and its role as a catalyst for other tall buildings in the city. Norman Foster has described 30 St Mary Axe as "a tremendous act of faith and confidence in the future". This book reveals the powerful statement it makes about the future of both the workplace and the modern city."--BOOK JACKET.

Description : A timely look at the ways in which glass is utilized in some of today's most beautiful and experimental building designs For centuries, glass has provoked fascination with its properties as a versatile material that permits light to enter buildings in spectacular ways. Much of modern architecture has been conceived by using glass to create increasingly minimal structures, to promote the notion of lightweight construction solutions, and to allow maximum daylight into buildings. New Glass Architecture showcases the changing ways that aesthetics and methods for using glass have been developing since the 1990s. The book begins with an introduction that traces the history of key moments in glass architecture--from the stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral to the Crystal Palace of 1851, and early constructions by John Soane, Bruno Taut, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe. Author Brent Richards explains the importance of glass artists in the second half of the 20th century and describes developments in glass technology over the last twenty years. Beautifully illustrated with newly commissioned photographs by Dennis Gilbert, the book features twenty-five case studies of recent glass constructions from around the world by such leading architects as Foster and Partners, Frank Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron, Steven Holl, Toyo Ito & Associates, Jean Nouvel, Raphael Viñoly, and Peter Zumthor. Each building is illustrated in full color and accompanied by detailed drawings. New Glass Architecture features these buildings and more: - Chapel of Ignatius, Seattle - Condé Nast Café, New York - DZ Bank, Berlin - Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia - Kunsthaus, Graz, Austria - Laban Dance Centre, London - Torre Agbar, Barcelona

Description : The Sustainable Tall Building: A Design Primer is an accessible and highly illustrated guide, which primes those involved in the design and research of tall buildings to dramatically improve their performance. Using a mixture of original research and analysis, best-practice design thinking and a detailed look at exemplar case studies, author Philip Oldfield takes the reader through the architectural ideas, engineering strategies and cutting-edge technologies that are available to the tall building design team. The book takes a global perspective, examining high-rise design in different climates, cultures and contexts. It considers common functions such as high-rise housing and offices, to more radical designs such as vertical farming and vertical cemeteries. Innovation is provided by examining not only the environmental performance of tall buildings but also their social sustainability, guiding the reader through strategies to create successful communities at height. The book starts by critically appraising the sustainability of tall building architecture past and present, before demonstrating innovative ways for future tall buildings to be designed. These include themes such as climatically responsive architecture, siting a tall building in the city, zero-carbon towers, skygardens and community spaces at height, sustainable structural systems and novel façades. In doing so, the book provides essential reading for architects, engineers, consultants, developers, researchers and students engaged with sustainable design and high-rise architecture.

Description : Tall buildings are not the only solution for achieving sustainability through increased density in cities but, given the scale of current population shifts, the vertical city is increasingly being seen as the most viable solution for many urban centers. However, the full implications of concentrating more people on smaller plots of land by building vertically - whether for work, residential or leisure functions - needs to be better researched and understood. It is generally accepted that we need to reduce the energy equation – in both operating and embodied terms – of every component and system in the building as an essential element in making it more sustainable. Mechanical HVAC systems (Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning) in tall office buildings typically account for 30-40 percent of overall building energy consumption. The increased efficiency (or possibly even elimination) of these mechanical systems – through the provision of natural ventilation – could thus be argued to be the most important single step we could make in making tall buildings more sustainable. This guide sets out recommendations for every phase of the planning, construction and operation of natural ventilation systems in these buildings, including local climatic factors that need to be taken into account, how to plan for seasonal variations in weather, and the risks in adopting different implementation strategies. All of the recommendations are based on analysis of the research findings from richly-illustrated international case studies. Tried and tested solutions to real-life problems make this an essential guide for anyone working on the design and operation of tall buildings anywhere in the world. This is the first technical guide from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s Tall Buildings & Sustainability Working Group looking in depth at a key element in the creation of tall buildings with a much-reduced environmental impact, while taking the industry closer to an appreciation of what constitutes a sustainable tall building, and what factors affect the sustainability threshold for tall.

Description : Swiss Re is one of the leading reinsurance companies in the world. This book documents its built identity by looking at its eleven buildings in six locations (Zurich, Adliswil, R'schlikon, Munich, London, and New York). It illustrates this corporate architecture with sketches, plans, and photographs and brings it alive in interviews by Roderick H'nig with the participating architects. Bothe Richter Teherani, Meili und Peter, Norman Foster, Tilla Theus, Silvio Schmed, Schnebli Amann Menz, and St'cheli und Partner provide fascinating perspectives on how the firm?'s corporate culture came to architectural expression. This discourse is then continued and expanded in texts by Kees Christianse, Kerstin Hoeger, Jons Messedat, Elisabeth Samsonow, Saskia Sassen, and Philip Ursprung. The book focuses on a broad range of aspects ? including corporate identity, globalization, corporate urbanism, sustainability, and risk ? and relates them to the larger theme of corporate architecture.
