Description : Excerpt from A Commentary on the Apocalypse, Vol. 1 I do not give this history of my undertaking, with a view to recommend my work to the confidence of the Christian public. It must stand or fall by its own merits. What I have now said, has been said rather in the Way of apology for having engaged in an undertaking so hazardous as that of writing and publishing a Commentary on the Revelation. I have been led along step by step to my present position, without having originally designed to publish anything at all concerning the Apocalypse. It will naturally be expected that I should state a few things, in regard to the plan and manner of my work. Thus the leisure and Opportunity for research that he had needed were brought unexpectedly within his reach: and the strongly urged request of his excellent friend Mr. Bick ersteth, concurred with the previous inclination of his own mind, in deciding him to apply himself seriously to the Work. The difficulty of the Seals met him at the outset. For the most careful reconsideration of the subject only confirmed him in his conviction of the utter untenable ness of the several solutions of them Offered by the best known Protestant Expositors: alike that by Mr. Faber on one theory Of Apocalyptic structure, that by Messrs. Woodhouse, Cuninghame, and Bickersteth on another, and (in so far as regarded the three earlier Seals) that by Mede and Bishop Newton also, on yet another. Thus he felt himself positively compelled on this introductory part of the prophecy to seek a truer solution. And in commencing his researches after it. Description : Excerpt from Rationale Apocalypticum, Vol. 1: Or, a Systematic Exposition of the Apocalypse; With Historical Proofs and Illustrations The increased interest felt Of late years on the subject of prophecy, is one of the remarkable Signs of the times. This increased interest has been especially manifested in the publication of numerous commentaries on the Revelation since the commencement of the present century. Nearly thirty have come under my own Observation; and the actual number is probably much greater. It might be supposed, that so much having been written within so short a period on a single book of Scripture, the subject must by this time be more than exhausted, and that no additional light beyond what the many expositions of the Apocalypse already published afford, can be expected at present. This, however, is altogether a mistaken impression. I am disposed to think that the constant publication Of new commentaries in rapid succession, one after the other, differing very much in their schemes of interpretation, indicates, not that the subject is exhausted, but rather that much yet remains to be done, and that, in fact, the fundamental principles on which the Apocalyptic visions are constructed, as well as the meaning and application of some of its most important symbolizations, have yet to be brought to light. The characteristic of. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Description : Excerpt from A Commentary on the Apocalypse To the seven churches of protonsq Asia is the work which the writer has undertaken inscribed. The names of these (l: 11) is a pledge for the importance of the churches addressed. Whether the churches of that day in Asia were limi ted to this number, is a question easily solved; for in Col. 4: 13 the church at Hi erupolis is mentioned in connection With that at Laodicea, and the former is in the near neighbourhood of the latter. Colossae, also was in the immediate neighbour hood of Laodicea. All three were on the confines of Phrygia and Lydia, and be longed, no doubt, to the circle of proconsular Asia. 80, a few years later than when the Apocalypse was written, we know there were large and flourishing churches in Tralles where lgnatius lived, and at Magnesia in its near neighbour hood, both in Lydia and but a moderate distance from Ephesus. Whether the Apocalyptist was conversant with these, and with many other churches of Asia besides those mentioned in the Revelation, cannot bedecided by express evidence but the probability surely is, that such a man as John, (whether apostle or other preacher of the gospel), would not have founded, or formed acquaintance with, seven churches only in Asia, when the whole region was filled with cities and an immense population. There must be other reasons, then, why only sea-en church es are here addressed and these Will be the subject of discussion in the sequel when we come to v. Asia is a name to which very different meanings are attached, by different writers and at different periods of time. It means, (1) The whole eastern Con tinent. (2) Hither Asia or Asia Minor, from the Sinus homes and Armenia Mi nor to the Aegean Sea. (3) That part of Asia which Attalus Ill king of Perga mus, gave by testament to the Romans, i. E. Mysia, Phrygia, Lycaonia, Lydia, Carin, Pisidia, and the southern coast, i. C. All the western, south-western, and southern parts of Asia Minor. (4) In the New Testament, the western coast from M ysia downwards, with the inland country to a considerable distance back, comprehending the western part of Phrygia, appears to be named flsia; and this tract constituted proconsular Asia, in the narrow meaning of that appellation. Description : Stevens invokes a powerful synthesis of recent Pauline studies by insisting the category of Israel is the hermeneutical key to all of Romans. Through Jesus the Messiah and the power of the Spirit, Paul saw fulfilled Isaiah’s vision of Israel’s destiny to the nations to bring the good news of salvation. Recapturing Isaiah’s vision broke the spell for Paul of the Great Assembly’s postexilic take on Israel. Paul’s apostleship first and foremost was to Israel, not gentiles exclusively. Paul used his exposé of the gospel of God in Romans to challenge believers in Rome to embrace their place in the messianic Israel of God.

Description : This three-part study covers the history of interpretation, theological foundations, and exegesis. Copious illustrations from the author's worldwide travels enhance discussion of Rome's emperors, empire, and ideology as the premier horizon for understanding John's immediate context and meaning. Distinctive contributions include Stevens's effort to re-canonize Revelation by insisting on gospel concord, methodically interpreting all of Revelation through the lens of the seven churches and showing how Revelation's imagery consistently relates more to the incarnation than the Parousia. Stevens bypasses traditional millennial options to argue that Revelation is "passion-millennial"--the passion of Jesus predicates the passion of the church. Under Stevens's hands, Revelation becomes eminently sensible to the original audience and powerfully pertinent for today's church.

Description : Excerpt from The New Testament in English: According to the Version by John Wycliffe, About A. D. 1380, and Revised by John Purvey, About A. D. 1388 The version of the New Testament printed in this volume is a reprint of the later of the two Wycliffite versions of the same, as exhibited in 'The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments, with the Apocryphal Books, in the earliest English versions made from the Latin Vulgate by John Wycliffe and his followers: edited by the Rev. Josiah Forshall, F.R.S., &c., and Sir Frederic Madden, K.H., F.R.S., &c., Oxford, at the University Press, 1850.' This splendid edition, in four volumes quarto, the result of twenty-two years of labour by two accomplished editors, is the chief source of our knowledge respecting these versions of the Scriptures, and is preceded by a Preface from which most of the information here given is extracted. Owing to the large size of this work, and its consequent high price, it has seemed desirable to reprint a portion of it in such a form as to bring it within the reach of a larger class of students than that to which an acquaintance with it has been hitherto confined. One attempt has already been made in this direction, in 'The Gothic and Anglo-Saxon Gospels in parallel columns with the Versions of Wycliffe and Tyndale;' edited by the Rev. Joseph Bosworth and G. Waring, in 1865. This volume contains only the four gospels, but as it exhibits the earlier version of them, whereas the present volume contains the later one, it is extremely serviceable for the purposes of comparison. Description : This book fills a void in the literature on covenant theology in the sixteenth century by exploring the exegetical debates and technical terminology underlying the crucial dogmatic developments of the period. It also provides important new insight into the thought of Johannes Cocceius by exploring his exegetical writings and grounding them in earlier federal thought. Brian J. Lee's study focuses particularly on Johannes Cocceius' 1659 Hebrews commentary in its polemical context. It reveals the importance of testamentary relations in Cocceius' thought and demonstrates both the variety and the significant continuities within the Reformed federal tradition.

Description : The book of Revelation perennially provokes outlandish futurist predictions proven patently false over time. Such prophecy failures leave the inquiring mind with a strong sense that the book of Revelation is nothing but a hoax, safely ignored and without contemporary relevance. The inevitable practical result, not only for church members, but for their ministers as well, is a canonical book stripped bare of canonical authority. In this volume, six contributors collectively attempt to provide a path toward recanonizing Revelation, reclaiming its authority and relevance through christological foundations. The result is a book not only useful in the collegiate and seminary classroom, but also for serious small-group Bible studies wanting to glean from Revelation something deeper than a fear of being "left behind."

Description : Emerging from two decades of the Great Depression and the New Deal and facing the rise of radical ideologies abroad, the American Right seemed beaten, broken, and adrift in the early 1950s. Although conservative luminaries such as T. S. Eliot, William F. Buckley Jr., Leo Strauss, and Eric Voegelin all published important works at this time, none of their writings would match the influence of Russell Kirk's 1953 masterpiece The Conservative Mind. This seminal book became the intellectual touchstone for a reinvigorated movement and began a sea change in Americans' attitudes toward traditionalism. In Russell Kirk, Bradley J. Birzer investigates the life and work of the man known as the founder of postwar conservatism in America. Drawing on papers and diaries that have only recently become available to the public, Birzer presents a thorough exploration of Kirk's intellectual roots and development. The first to examine the theorist's prolific writings on literature and culture, this magisterial study illuminates Kirk's lasting influence on figures such as T. S. Eliot, William F. Buckley Jr., and Senator Barry Goldwater -- who persuaded a reluctant Kirk to participate in his campaign for the presidency in 1964. While several books examine the evolution of postwar conservatism and libertarianism, surprisingly few works explore Kirk's life and thought in detail. This engaging biography not only offers a fresh and thorough assessment of one of America's most influential thinkers but also reasserts his humane vision in an increasingly inhumane time.
