A Cry for Help Book Excerpt:

My name is Desiree. Yes, I was married and divorced three times. And each divorce, I asked for my maiden name back. I am a mother of two daughters and have eight adult grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. I’m taking this time out in my life to write my story because there are so many children and adults crying out for help. They cannot afford Dr. Phil or Oprah or trust anyone enough to talk to them. At one point of time, I tried to reach out to both of them and hit a dead end each time. I always wondered how people get in touch with them. Twenty-five or more years ago, I started writing Oprah a letter when she had Ms. Erica Kane and all of the All My Children husbands on her show with her. The letter turned into a book! So I never tried to send it. I called it Will the Real Erica Kane Please Stand Up. (All the Men I Loved.) Not who loved me because I really can’t tell who loved me. My journey took me to hell and back. Through all of my trials and tribulations, I had to come back to Jesus. When he said, “I will never leave nor forsake you,” he meant just that. It gets hard sometimes to believe it, but when you keep hitting a brick wall and facing death in the face so many times, you start wondering, why am I still here? It’s not as though we can stand in a line and pick our race or our mother and father. Wow! Would life be any different? Believe me—it’s only by the grace of God that any of us are still here. We all have a purpose for being on this earth. My belief is my purpose is to encourage others to believe in yourself and trust that God really does have your back no matter what the devil throw your way. As the song says, “He paid it all.” Meaning, Jesus paid for all of our sins, and I thank him for allowing me to be alive long enough to acknowledge that. So here’s my story.

A Cry For Help Book Excerpt:

The gospel of Christ is a gospel of peace, yet Christianity has not escaped the specter of religious violence. The legacy of the church has not only been one of patient suffering and forgiving love but also of brutal bloodshed. With tensions between Christians and non-Christians on the rise in many areas of the world, the question of how the church is to respond to religious violence is a pressing one, encompassing issues of ecclesiology, theology, and missiology. Dr. Mipo E. Dadang explores the contextual realities that have led some believers in Northern Nigeria to embrace violence as a justifiable response to persecution. Drawing on extensive interviews, he provides an overview of the history of the church in the region, the impact of local theologies and traditions on mindsets and behaviors, and the insight of local believers into the catalysts, and solutions, to violent conflict. Alongside this phenomenological study, he provides a powerful biblical and theological foundation for understanding bloodshed as a violation of God’s created order. He weaves together biblical teachings, the example of the early church, and the theology of Martin Luther to demonstrate that the people of God are called to reject, prevent, and eliminate violence, replacing it with creative alternatives. This deeply powerful book has implications for every Christian seeking to live out the gospel of Christ in peaceful co-existence with their neighbors.

A Cry For Help Who Will Speak For Me Book Excerpt:

This is a true story about what my twin boys went through with their biological father in the court system. My boys did not have any rights or anyone to speak for them. As a mother you cannot speak for your children in court. The judges and lawyers assume every case is the same. There are a lot of parents out there who just want to keep the other parent away from the children just because they don’t want them in their lives anymore. Well because of that my boys suffered a lot. When you enter into the court system with your children they become just a number. Then it becomes a money game with the lawyers, no one really cares about the best interest of the children. Throughout my story you will see how everyone turned their head the other way, no one wanted to help my boys. All the signs were there that there was something terribly wrong, but no one wanted to get involved. Everyone was afraid to speak up for the boys. I know that there are a lot of parents out there that are going through custody battles, the courts are backed up with them. There is a message in this book that I need to get out.

At present any one of a large number of professional services may be called upon to deal with the distress of individuals and families. They may be concerned successively or simultaneously, in co-operation with one another or in competition. In this profusion of services a large number of problems fail to receive help. This book offers a way of defining the help that the different services can give. The authors maintain that each of the professions has its distinctive approach and that each of these approaches should have its justification in theory and practice.

Queer Youth Suicide Culture and Identity Book Excerpt:

Despite increasing tolerance, legal protections against homophobia, and anti-discrimination policies throughout much of the western world, suicide attempts by queer youth remain relatively high. For over twenty years, research into queer youth suicide has debated reasons and risks, although it has also often reiterated assumptions about sexual identity and youth vulnerability. Understanding the cultural context in which suicide becomes a necessary escape from living an unliveable life is the key to queer youth suicide prevention. This book uses cultural theory to outline some of the ways in which queer youth suicide is perceived in popular culture, media and research. It highlights how the ways in which we think about queer youth suicide have changed over time and some of the benefits and limitations of current thinking on the topic. Focusing on identity, Queer Youth Suicide, Culture and Identity also investigates why queer young men continue to attempt suicide. Drawing on approaches from queer theory, cultural studies and sociology, it explores how sexual identity formation, sexual shame and discrepancies in community belonging and exclusions are implicated in the reasons why some queer youth are resilient while others are vulnerable and at risk of suicide. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, media studies, queer theory and social theory with interests in youth, gender and sexuality, and suicidology.

After all he was always secretly with them, whenever they were stuck, he always seemed to send help, and he always knew where they were. Something always ate at them though, and was in fact suggested by Tsado, why, if the High King was so powerful, couldn't he deliver them himself? Who is Old Count Nick? He seems to be more than a match for their puny weapons, or is he? The King's Courtroom. Why does it look so familiar, his courtiers, he knows them surely!

Companioning the Grieving Child Book Excerpt:

Renowned author and educator Alan Wolfelt redefines the role of the grief counselor in this guide for caregivers to grieving children. Providing a viable alternative to the limitations of the medical establishment’s model for companioning the bereaved, Wolfelt encourages counselors and other caregivers to aspire to a more compassionate philosophy in which the child is the expert of his or her grief—not the counselor or caregiver. The approach outlined in the book argues against treating grief as an illness to be diagnosed and treated but rather for acknowledging it as an event that forever changes a child's worldview. By promoting careful listening and observation, this guide shows caregivers, family members, teachers, and others how to support grieving children and help them grow into healthy adults.

Helping Children to Tell About Sexual Abuse Book Excerpt:

Children need to be able to disclose their experiences of sexual abuse in order to stop the abuse and get help. Practical and accessible, this book offers guidance on how professionals can identify potential abuse cases and create safe opportunities for children to talk about sexual abuse. The book explores challenges in facilitating and responding to disclosures of abuse, such as: how to recognise the signs, ask the right questions and react to a disclosure. It also draws on research carried out with children who have experienced sexual abuse, to convey how experiences of disclosure feel to those making them and what informs a decision to tell or not tell. Helping Children to Tell About Sexual Abuse will be suitable for any professional working with a child or young person, including social workers, psychologists, child/family therapists, health care workers, school nurses, school counsellors, health visitors, police and youth workers.
