Description : The careers of New York City detective Simon Ziele and his former partner Captain Declan Mulvaney went in remarkably different directions after the tragic death of Ziele's fiancée in the 1904 General Slocum ferry disaster. Although both men were earmarked for much bigger things, Ziele moved to Dobson, a small town north of the city, to escape the violence, and Mulvaney buried himself even deeper, agreeing to head up the precinct in the most crime-ridden area in the city. Yet with all of the detectives and resources at Mulvaney's disposal, a particularly puzzling crime compels him to look for someone he can trust absolutely. When a chorus girl is found dead on a Broadway stage dressed in the leading lady's costume, there are no signs of violence, no cuts, no bruises—no marks at all. If pressed, the coroner would call it a suicide, but then that would make her the second girl to turn up dead in such a manner in the last few weeks. And the news of a possible serial killer would be potentially disastrous to the burgeoning theater world, not to mention the citizens of New York. Following on the heels of Stefanie Pintoff's acclaimed and award-winning debut, A Curtain Falls is a moody and evocative tale that follows Ziele and his partners as they scour the dark streets of early-twentieth-century New York in search of a true fiend.

When the curtain rises, we are all enraptured by the glare of the lights and the smell of the greasepaint but it's when the curtain falls that the real drama begins . . . In 1952 two young lovers meet, in secret, at the beautiful Southern Cross theatre in the very heart of London's West End. Their relationship is made up of clandestine meetings and stolen moments because there is someone who will make them suffer if he discovers she is no longer 'his'. But life in the theatre doesn't always go according to plan and tragedy and heartache are waiting in the wings for all the players . . . Almost seventy years later, a new production of When the Curtain Falls arrives at the theatre, bringing with it Oscar Bright and Olive Green and their budding romance. Very soon, though, strange things begin to happen and they learn about the ghost that's haunted the theatre since 1952, a ghost who can only be seen on one night of the year. Except the ghost is appearing more often and seems hell bent on sabotaging Oscar and Olive. The young couple realise they need to right that wrong from years gone by, but can they save themselves before history repeats itself and tragedy strikes once more? Moulin Rouge meets Phantom of the Opera in this spellbinding and magical story of unrequited love and revenge. When the Curtain Falls is Carrie Hope Fletcher at her romantic best - it will take your breath away.

Description : Joanna Stuart had once seen the window of a seaside hotel room when driving past with her husband. Its offer of peace and independence stayed with her and several years later, at a crisis point in her life, she compulsively returns to ‘the Window’. But she fails to find the expected tranquillity and isolation. Instead she becomes involved with the cast of the resort’s summer variety show, whose leading lady has recently been murdered. A member of the cast is obviously the murderer and a cloud of suspicion hangs over the tight-knit and loyal community. Baffled by lack of motive and frustrated by lack of progress, Detective Inspector Carter persuades Joanna to take advantage of the friendship offered to her by the players and helps him penetrate their closed ranks. Feeling a little treacherous she nevertheless comes to enjoy her role of amateur detective, and her strong involvement with the players helps her to shut out her own problems. During the last weeks of the glorious summer she gradually sees the pattern of the murder take shape, but it isn’t until she witnesses a reconstruction of the crime that the identity of the killer emerges, and Joanna’s own problems also become clarified. This is a subtle and fairly-clued whodunnit, full of character and movement and with a stunning climax which does not disappoint.

Description : COUNT FOLKE BERNADOTTE attracted the whole world’s attention during the hectic months that preceded the total collapse of the Third Reich and the capitulation of the German forces. About the middle of February 1945 he set out from Sweden for Germany to try to establish contact with Heinrich Himmler and induce him to allow all Danes and Norwegians in German concentration camps to be transported to Sweden for internment until the end of the war. In this book, which is based on his own notes and reports, Count Bernadotte describes his various missions, which were repeated up to the very day of the surrender, his meetings with Himmler and other leading figures of the Nazi regime, and gives Intimate close-ups of the events and the weird atmosphere in which the last act of the drama of the Third Reich was played. He explains, further, how his project, which originally had had a purely humanitarian character, developed a political one of great importance when, long past the eleventh hour, he was asked to convey, via the Swedish Government, Himmler’s offer of surrender to the western Powers. After the war, Bernadotte was unanimously chosen by the victorious powers to be the United Nations Security Council mediator in the Arab-Israeli conflict of 1947-1948. He was assassinated in Jerusalem in 1948 by members of the underground Zionist group Lehi while pursuing his official duties.

He is a man of immense personal charm, who moves in exalted circles and is highly respected. Shortly he will be honoured with a knighthood. But he has a secret. Despite his status and the fact that he is married, he regularly trawls the back streets of Southwark in search of male company. His little ‘weakness’ comes to the attention of the morally dubious, Clive Potter, a theatre critic who despises Edmund and uses this information to blackmail him into putting on a play he has written. But before this can happen, Clive Potter is murdered and during the subsequent police investigation details of Edmund’s homosexuality surface. They soon become public property. His wife distances herself from him, audiences fall away and Edmund loses control of his beloved theatre. In an effort to redeem himself, Edmund joins the City Imperial Volunteers and goes to fight in the South African War. However, he is headstrong and ill-equipped for army life so he comes into conflict with Captain Peters, his Commanding Officer. While stationed at Bloemfontein, Edmund reconnects with Lewis Davenport, a young, homosexual man of startling honesty, whom he knew in London. Soon they become lovers but are separated by the demands of war
