A Date at the Altar Book Excerpt:

New York Times bestselling author Cathy Maxwell’s glittering Marrying the Duke series continues—Twice he has been close to the altar and still no duchess. Will the third time be the charm? A duke can’t marry just anyone. His wife must be of good family, be fertile, be young. Struggling playwright Sarah Pettijohn is absolutely the last woman Gavin Whitridge, Duke of Baynton, would ever fall in love with. She is an actress, born on the wrong side of the blanket, and always challenges his ducal authority. She never hesitates to tell him what she thinks. However, there is something about her that stirs his blood . . . which makes her perfect for a bargain he has in mind: In exchange for backing her play, he wants Sarah to teach him about love. And he, in turn, has a few things to teach her about men . . .

St Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Virgins of Cologne Book Excerpt:

The cult of St. Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Virgin Martyrs of Cologne was the most widespread relic cult in medieval Europe. The sheer abundance of relics of the Eleven Thousand Virgins, which allowed for the display of immense collections, shaped the notion of corporate cohesion that characterized the cult. Though the primacy of St. Ursula as the leader of this holy band was established by the tenth century, she was conceived as the head of a corporate body. Innumerable inventories and liturgical texts attest to the fact that this cult was commemorated and referenced as a collective mass - Undecim millium virginum. This group identity informed, and was formulated by, the presentation of their relics, as well as much of the imagery associated with this cult. This book explores the visual, textual, performative, and perceptual aspects of this phenomenon, with particular emphasis on painting and sculpture in late medieval Cologne. Examining the ways in which both texts and images worked as vestments, garbing the true core of relics which formed the body of the cult, the book examines the cult from the core outward, seeking to understand hagiographic texts and images in terms of their role in articulating relic cults.

Tel Dan in Its Northern Cultic Context Book Excerpt:

This work presents in detail a description of archaeological data from the Iron II temple complex at Tel Dan in northern Israel. Davis analyzes the archaeological remains from the ninth and eighth centuries, paying close attention to how the temple functioned as sacred space. Correlating the archaeological data with biblical depictions of worship, especially the “textual strata” of 1 Kings 18 and the book of Amos, Davis argues that the temple was the site of “official” and family religion and that worship at the temple became increasingly centralized. Tel Dan's role in helping reconstruct ancient Israelite religion, especially distinctive religious traditions of the northern kingdom, is also considered.

The Hellenistic Polis of Kos Book Excerpt:

"The general aim of the conference, the papers of which are published in this volume, was to convene scholars working on different aspects of Koan history and culture during the Hellenistic period to provide an up-to-date view of present research in different fields. The contributions cover the main areas of archaeology, epigraphy, history, numismatics and prosopography and also touch upon art history and geology. Most of the articles concern inscriptions in one form or another and their chronological and historical contexts. The contributions cover questions connected with the Koan Asklepieia in the third century, a general survey of the chronology of inscriptions and the application of S. Tracey's method of distinguishing different hands, the chronology of the eponymous magistrates, the monarchoi, and of a group of decorated, funerary altars. The modern historical events resulting in the delay in the publication of IG XII are presented. Also treated are the personal names on coins, a recently excavated statue base for a poetess, Hellenistic democracy, and two inscriptions, a local decree and a cult calendar, from Halasarna. Three articles treat Koan amphoras. They give a survey of the Koan amphora shapes known up to now and present new material from Halasarna and the southern Levant. A refined system for the dating of complete or nearly complete amphoras through the proportions of the vessels is presented. Certain methodological problems encountered when trying to ""translate"" the number of stamped handles reported at a certain site into a rough estimate of the probable volume of wine which they signify are also discussed. Finally, we are given a survey of the stone materials extracted on the island and how they were used in different periods."

Life Death and Representation Book Excerpt:

This volumepresents acollection of essays on different aspects of Roman sarcophagi. These varied approaches will produce fresh insights into a subject which is receiving increased interest in English-language scholarship, with a new awareness of the important contribution that sarcophagi can make to the study of the social use and production of Roman art. The book will therefore be a timely addition to existing literature. Metropolitan sarcophagi are the main focus of the volume, which will cover a wide time range from the first century AD to post classical periods (including early Christian sarcophagi and post-classical reception). Other papers will look at aspects of viewing and representation, iconography, and marble analysis. There will be an Introduction written by the co-editors.
