A Hundred Billion Ghosts Book Excerpt:

A man who lost his own body. The world's worst detective. Sugar frosted cereal. And every ghost ever. "This is a great story that started out funnier than heck then sucked me into the mystery. I could not put it down." - JBronder Book Reviews "Laced with poignancy, humor and loads of twists and turns. D.M. Sinclair has written a novel that I for one know I will read time and time again, and never get tired of it." - Rachel Reads The ghosts of every human who ever died just became visible. And they seem like they're going to hang around, maybe forever. If you had a chance to try out being one of them for a while, would you take it? Ryan Matney did. It didn't go well. Now he wants his body back. Except that somebody stole it, and will do anything to make sure he never finds it. With the help of a private detective who has never solved a case and a scientist with very little faith in science, Ryan haunts across the ghost-infested world trying to track down his missing body. He has just ten days to get back into it, or be obliterated.... forever. Also, he missed breakfast. That's less of a problem. But still a problem. A "hilarious and compelling" paranormal comedy thriller with "just the right balance of humor, poignancy, and twists".

A Hundred Billion Ghosts Gone Book Excerpt:

The "hilarious and compelling" breakout surprise of 2017 has an even-more-addictive sequel! It’s been seven years since all the ghosts came back. Now, in four days, they’ll all be invisible again. The clock is ticking. Meanwhile the ghost of Abraham Lincoln has been prominently annihilated in mid-speech. And he’s not the only one; other ghosts are also being obliterated from the face of the Earth. All the evidence points to the Post-Mortal Services Clinic, where Ryan Matney happens to be a lowly, bored lab assistant. So Ryan and the brilliant scientist Margie join forces with their incompetent and semi-corporeal detective Lowell and a sketchy psychic medium whose powers truly are medium at best. Together they race to stop the Clinic from falling into the wrong hands before the lights go out on the haunted world. And maybe, just maybe, Ryan won’t die this time. Yes he will. More than once. The second book in the series that has been called “crazy-fun and cleverly written”, “hugely imaginative”, and “the most fun I've had in fiction in a long time”.

Dead Reckoning in Frederick Book Excerpt:

When Kayla Dunn, photographer for the Dulany Paranormal Team, discovers a murdered girl in Carroll Creek, no one believes that there is any connection between the victim and the teams challenging assignment from the Frederick County Landmarks Foundation. As paranormal activities continue to increase in Fredericks heritage homes and buildings, it becomes apparent that the spirits have a message, which arrives in the form of a trompe loeil, a three-dimensional painting meaning to deceive the eye. Nick Nucci, the detective assigned to the murder case begins to work with the team after Kaylas photos reveal a live person lurking among the shadows belonging to the spirits. He is able to uncover a web of transgressions that point to secret business dealings reflecting misdeeds of long past. Because of the mixed history of slavery and abolition and the strategic location of Frederick, Maryland, during the Civil War, many residents fought and perished, carrying both guilt and passion into the afterlife. Now spirits of the past have returned to haunt the present, revealing a shocking secret worth killing for and to summon a reckoning in Frederick.

Sources of Chinese Tradition Book Excerpt:

A collection of seminal primary readings on the social, intellectual, and religious traditions of China, Sources of Chinese Tradition, Volume 1 has been widely used and praised for almost forty years as an authoritative resource for scholars and students and as a thorough and engaging introduction for general readers. Here at last is a completely revised and expanded edition of this classic sourcebook, compiled by noted China scholars Wm. Theodore de Bary and Irene Bloom. Updated to reflect recent scholarly developments, with extensive material on popular thought and religion, social roles, and women's education, this edition features new translations of more than half the works from the first edition, as well as many new selections. Arranged chronologically, this anthology is divided into four parts, beginning at the dawn of literate Chinese civilization with the Oracle-Bone inscriptions of the late Shang dynasty (1571–1045 B.C.E.) and continuing through the end of the Ming dynasty (C.E. 1644). Each chapter has an introduction that provides useful historical context and offers interpretive strategies for understanding the readings. The first part, The Chinese Tradition in Antiquity, considers the early development of Chinese civilization and includes selections from Confucius's Analects, the texts of Mencius and Laozi, as well as other key texts from the Confucian, Daoist, and Legalist schools. Part 2, The Making of a Classical Culture, focuses on Han China with readings from the Classic of Changes (I Jing), the Classic of Filiality, major Han syntheses, and the great historians of the Han dynasty. The development of Buddhism, from the earliest translations from Sanskrit to the central texts of the Chan school (which became Zen in Japan), is the subject of the third section of the book. Titled Later Daoism and Mahayana Buddhism in China, this part also covers the teachings of Wang Bi, Daoist religion, and texts of the major schools of Buddhist doctrine and practice. The final part, The Confucian Revival and Neo-Confucianism, details the revival of Confucian thought in the Tang, Song, and Ming periods, with historical documents that link philosophical thought to political, social, and educational developments in late imperial China. With annotations, a detailed chronology, glossary, and a new introduction by the editors, Sources of Chinese Tradition will continue to be a standard resource, guidebook, and introduction to Chinese civilization well into the twenty-first century.

William Hope Hodgson was an English novelist, short story writer, poet, photographer, lecturer, sailor, soldier, and bodybuilder. He produced a large body of work, consisting of essays, short fiction, and novels, spanning several overlapping genres including horror, fantastic fiction, and science fiction. Hodgson used his experiences at sea to lend authentic detail to his short horror stories, many of which are set on the ocean. His novels feature more cosmic themes, but several of his novels also focus on horrors associated with the sea. He is best known as the author of the weird fiction novels The House on the Borderland and The Night Land, and as the creator of the character Carnacki, the Ghost Hunter. Hodgson’s fiction has been a great influence on a number of horror writers, especially celebrated for his authentic narratives on the horrors of the sea and his creation of the enduring supernatural investigator Thomas Carnacki. The Lovely Wicked Rain Book Excerpt:

They find him on the beach, shooting bullets into the sand. His name? Jeremiah Cooper, the son of the bullheaded high school football coach. Slight of build, soft of voice, he's got all kinds of torment lurking behind his eyes. But despite Garrison Gage's best efforts, he can't pull the kid out of his shell. Then someone turns up dead at the local community college, and Jeremiah's fragile world shatters. Add a crisis in Gage's good friend's life, an ongoing feud with his adopted daughter about her life choices, and a hauntingly beautiful FBI agent with secrets of her own, and it's a lot more drama than a half-retired private investigator with a bum knee wanted. Whatever happened to quiet rainy nights sipping bourbon, watching the sun sink beneath the waves on the Oregon coast, and trying to think of a ten-letter word that means grumpy and glad about it? But before Gage can even write the word curmudgeon, he's pulled deeper into Jeremiah's world--a world of sex, secrets, and a sadistic evil that preys on human weakness. "It was a shrewd marketing move ... to entitle his first mystery novel The Gray and Guilty Sea. It makes it nearly irresistible for an old John D. MacDonald fan like me . . . The Night Land Book Excerpt:

Described by H. P. Lovecraft as being "one of the most potent pieces of macabre imagination ever written", The Night Land is a classic horror fantasy novel by William Hope Hodgson published in 1912. Telling the story of a dying earth, The Night Land starts with a man from the 17th century who, mourning the death of his true love, is given a vision through the eyes his future incarnation. In that distant time Earth is only dimly lit by the remaining glow of the dead Sun. The last millions of the human race cluster together inside the Last Redoubt, a huge metal pyramid, and are set upon by mysterious forces from the dark outside. Leaving the protection of their refuge means certain death, but our narrator makes mind contact with a survivor in a forgotten Lesser Redoubt. He must journey alone through the evil darkness to find her, knowing that she is the reincarnation of his past precious love. Writer Clark Ashton Smith said that "In all literature, there are few works so sheerly remarkable, so purely creative, as The Night Land... it impresses the reader as being the ultimate saga of a perishing cosmos, the last epic of a world beleaguered by eternal night and by the unvisageable spawn of darkness. Only a great poet could have conceived and written this story; and it is perhaps not illegitimate to wonder how much of actual prophecy may have been mingled with the poesy."
