Description : There are countless paths to follow when seeking spiritual guidance, but thousands of years of religion and theology cannot replace the premier example that Jesus himself set. In "A Portrait of Jesus, " bestselling writer Joseph Girzone recaptures the truth of Jesus that is presented in the Gospels and gives a compelling vision of the person Jesus' contemporaries must have known. In his most powerful work yet, Girzone seeks to personify Christ in the minds of readers by asking some simple questions: "What did people see in Jesus as he walked down the street? How did he approach others and what would these people take away from meeting him? What do his actions tell us about how we can live our lives today?" It is Girzone's empowering and loving understanding of the heart of Christianity that will make "A Portrait of Jesus" a groundbreaking classic in the tradition of his bestselling books, "Joshua" and "Never Alone." "From the Hardcover edition."

Description : The impulse to publish these sermons came to me after I had successfully published my book, For Our Age of Anxiety, based on the Sermon on the Mount. All of these sermons were first written and preached while I was pastor of the Seven Hills Baptist Church in Owensboro, Kentucky where I served for thirty-four years. As I considered the idea of publishing a follow up book of sermons from the remaining chapters of Matthew, I went to my files and began the process of selecting the sermons to be included. After I had selected these sermons, I began to see that they could be put together under the theme of a portrait of Jesus. This book features sermons that focus on the early days of the ministry of Jesus particularly as they related to the ministry of John the Baptist. They also shed some light on the temptations of Jesus in the desert, on the call of those who would be his first disciples, and what is involved in being a disciple of Jesus then and now. Some of the sermons are based on the miracles of Jesus, thus revealing the compassion of Jesus. These sermons also deal with the idea of the Kingdom of God, showing some of the principles and characteristics of the Kingdom. The last two sermons are about the person of Jesus. It is my hope that these sermons will indeed help the reader to draw his or her own mental and spiritual portrait of Jesus.

Description : What is Jesus like? What kind of a person is he? Is he emotional or stoic? Is he proud or humble? Is he aloof or friendly? This book attempts to answer these types of questions. After demonstrating that Jesus is the promised Christ and that he is both divine and human, this book examines Jesus' personal characteristics as they are displayed in the four Gospels. The four Gospels are clearly not a typical biography of Jesus. Nonetheless, they do provide an informative account of his life here on earth, from which we can discover what he is like as a person.

Description : I do believe that the kind of New Testament survey material that Dr. Imperato has prepared can stimulate the interest of newcomers to the field, especially college undergraduates and others who have a cultural connection to the Bible but very slender acquaintance with it. The observation of parallel versions of the same pericope in the gospels is usually a new and intriguing experience for this constituency, which is often predisposed to consider the sacred texts dryly uniform and threadbare. In respect to Paul, there is next to no undistorted prior exposure to build upon, especially among Catholics, so an introduction to his prominent themes — but only with understanding of his texts as genuine letters, not treatises — can arouse interest in further assisted reading. Dr. Imperato's sketches are properly dedicated to such reading assistance, not to furnishing "cliff notes" in place of the Bible. This is why I think his work can be of considerable educational value. — The Rev. Dr. Richard J. Dillon, Senior Professor of Theology (New Testament), Fordham University, former general editor of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly

Description : Includes Study Guide Through Mark’s Eyes invites you into the Jesus story—to walk the dusty roads, to row the boats on the Sea of Galilee, to witness healings, to stand in the Temple, and to weep at the cross. This dramatic, colorful, moving version of the Gospel of Mark is not a new translation; instead, Puck Purnell augments the New Revised Standard Version of Mark with vivid language and descriptions to reimagine the Gospel story and breathe fresh life into it. “I was spellbound by Through Mark’s Eyes. I doubt I have ever read a gospel account from start to finish without interruption or desire for one.” -Barbara Howe, Harford, CT “I very much enjoyed reading Through Mark’s Eyes. I loved that the story was easy to follow. As for my plain, honest opinion, I can see people of my age reading, enjoying, and understanding this book.” -Allison Swayne, 8th grade, Henry James Middle School, Simsbury, CT “You have managed to convey the roughness and immediacy of Mark in a more contemporary narrative mode....Your work will offer people some new points of entry into the story and will stimulate reflection and discussion.” -L. William Countryman, Sherman E. Johnson Professor in Biblical Studies, Church Divinity School of the Pacific Puck Purnell, an Episcopal priest, serves as Rector at Old St. Andrew’s Church in Bloomfield, CT. A graduate of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, he is a talented preacher and teacher. Mr. Purnell lives with his wife, Joanne Kimball, in Simsbury, CT.

Description : This groundbreaking approach to the study of the fourfold gospel offers a challenging alternative to prevailing assumptions about the creation of the gospels and their portraits of Jesus. How and why does it matter that we have these four gospels? Why were they placed alongside one another as four parallel yet diverse retellings of the same story? Francis Watson, widely regarded as one of the foremost New Testament scholars of our time, explains that the four gospels were chosen to give a portrait of Jesus. He explores the significance of the fourfold gospel's plural form for those who constructed it and for later Christian communities, showing that in its plurality it bears definitive witness to what God has done in Jesus Christ. Watson focuses on reading the gospels as a group rather than in isolation and explains that the fourfold gospel is greater than, and other than, the sum of its individual parts. Interweaving historical, exegetical, and theological perspectives, this book is accessibly written for students and pastors but is also of interest to professors and scholars.

Description : "The Five Portraits of Jesus" presents a progressive revelation of Jesus as a person. The first portrait shows him as He is revealed in the Gospels as the Christ who came in the flesh. The Gospels deal with his earthly life and his relationships with men and women. In the second portrait in the Acts of the Apostles, Christ is revealed as the risen Lord. He was resurrected and a whole new view of Him was experienced as the disciples were renewed and broadened in their faith and as the church was established. The third portrait is in the Epistles where Jesus is revealed as he relates to the church and disciples as the Divine Redeemer in his relationship to God, and in the Christian experience. The fourth portrait is found in Hebrews and in the Revelation where Jesus is shown as the everlasting Priest and King. The fifth portrait is found in the history and growth of the Christian Church throughout its existence under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Description : Updated Edition of a Bestselling Study of Jesus and the Gospels In this work Darrell Bock, a leading evangelical New Testament scholar who speaks and teaches around the world, and Benjamin Simpson show that a coherent portrait of Jesus emerges from the four Gospels when they are taken seriously as historical documents. When read together, the Gospels provide a clear picture of Jesus and his unique claims to authority. This book surveys all the Gospel units and relates them to their parallel passages, showing how the literary and canonical relationships work. Offering up-to-date interaction with the latest discussions about Jesus, the second edition has been substantially revised and updated throughout and includes three new chapters on how we got the Gospels.

Description : Yung Suk Kim raises a perennial question about Jesus: How can we approach the historical Jesus? Kim proposes to interpret him from the perspective of the dispossessed--through the eyes of weakness. Exploring Jesus's experience, interpretation, and enactment of weakness, understanding weakness as both human condition and virtue, Kim offers a new portrait of Jesus who is weak and strong, and empowered to bring God's rule, replete with mercy, in the here and now. Arguing against the grain of tradition that the strong Jesus identifies with the weak, Kim demonstrates that it is the weak Jesus who identifies with the weak. The paradoxical truth with Jesus is: "Because he is weak, he is strong." In the end, Jesus dies a death of paradox that reveals both his ultimate weakness that demands divine justice, and his unyielding spirit of love for the world and truth of God.

Description : There are plenty of good books on the death and resurrection of Jesus: exegetical commentaries, practical application, apologetic works. Yet in our focus on precision and reason, we have sometimes missed the staggering beauty of the Person that overflows the Gospel stories. Without sacrificing truth, this "portrait" of Jesus re-tells the death and resurrection accounts with the beauty of the Savior front and center, and everything else faded into the background. The aim of the book is not exegesis, application, or proof, but worship. Worship that moves our hearts through the stories we already know so well.

Description : Potrait of Jesus? is a comprehensive and up-to-the-minute account of the Shroud of Turin which, according to legend, was the garment which covered Jesus in the tomb. Frank Tribbe has for many years been a member of the elite group of scientists and researchers studying the Shroud. His book takes all their findings into account to show that, contrary to claims that it is a medieval hoax, the Shroud is an authentic first-century relic from the Near East, probably Palestine. The massive evidence which Tribbe presents from decades of research makes Portrait of Jesus? the best resource for knowledge about the Shroud. This edition contains updates on all findings to the present. "This book pulls together all existing information on the Shroud...It also provides ingenious theories of how the Shroud found its way from the Jerusalem of the Apostles to the France of the 14th century... The reasonable man may find it harder than he imagines to dismiss the Shroud of Turin after reading this book." --James C. O'Neill,National Catholic News Service "Comprehensive and accurate information..." --Rev. Adam J.
