Description : In the midst of the freezing winter of 1978-79, more than 2,000 strikes, infamously coined the "Winter of Discontent", erupted across Britain as workers rejected the then Labour Government's attempts to curtail wage increases with an incomes policy. Labour's subsequent electoral defeat at the hands of the Conservative Party under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher ushered in an era of unprecedented political, economic, and social change for Britain. A potent social myth also quickly developed around the Winter of Discontent, one where "bloody-minded" and "greedy" workers brought down a sympathetic government and supposedly invited the ravages of Thatcherism upon the British labour movement. The Winter of Discontent provides a re-examination of this crucial series of events in British history by charting the construction of the myth of the Winter of Discontent. Highlighting key strikes and bringing forward the previously-ignored experiences of female, black, and Asian rank-and-file workers along-side local trade union leaders, the author places their experiences within a broader constellation of trade union, Labour Party, and Conservative Party changes in the 1970s, showing how striking workers' motivations become much more textured and complex than the "bloody-minded" or "greedy" labels imply. The author further illustrates that participants' memories represent a powerful force of "counter-memory", which for some participants, frame the Winter of Discontent as a positive and transformative series of events, especially for the growing number of female activists. Overall, this fascinating book illuminates the nuanced contours of myth, memory, and history of the Winter of Discontent.

Description : ". . . This is essential reading for anyone who wants to make sense of the freeze movement or make nuclear policy more responsive to democratic processes." Pam Solo Co-director, Institute for Peace and International Security "A rare achievement, combining impeccable scholarly research with lively, readable prose. . . . It is at the same time a careful, thoughtful history of the recent nuclear freeze movement, and a sophisticated analysis of the problem of social change in this country, using that movement as a test. The synthesis of theory and history is accomplished with great skill, making the book valuable to students of social change and to a larger public." Description : Over thirty years later, the ‘winter of discontent’ of 1978–79 still resonates in British politics. On 22 January 1979, 1.5 million workers were on strike. Industrial unrest swept Britain in an Arctic winter. Militant shop stewards blocked medical supplies to hospitals; mountains of rubbish remained uncollected; striking road hauliers threatened to bring the country to a standstill; even the dead were left unburied. Within weeks, the beleaguered Callaghan Labour government fell from power. In the 1979 general election, Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister, beginning eighteen years of unbroken Conservative rule. Based on a wide range of newly available historical sources and key interviews, this full-length account breaks new ground, analysing the origins, character and impact of a turbulent period of industrial unrest. This important study will appeal to all those interested in contemporary history and British politics.

Description : Protest in Belgrade addresses one of the most important social movements of this decade -- the civil and student peace demonstrations which took place in Belgrade during the winter of 1996/97. The demonstrations were the largest ever in history and attracted global media attention. This in-depth study of a society calling for democracy, is based on interviews with over 1000 civilians and students. The book analyses the empirical findings of the research and presents specific sociological data on matters such as class composition, political and social values, motivations and objectives. A chronology of events is also included. The book provides an abundance of valuable information for analysts of postsocialist transformation, researchers of social movements and social change and all those concerned with the tragic events in Southeast Europe.
