This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Rising inequality and widespread poverty, social unrest and polarization, gender and ethnic disparities, declining social mobility, economic fragility, unbalanced growth due to technology and globalization, and existential danger from climate change are urgent global concerns of our day. These issues are intertwined. They therefore require a holistic framework to examine their interplay and bring the various strands together. Leading academic economists have partnered with experts from several international institutions to explain the sources and scale of these challenges. They gather a wide array of empirical evidence and country experiences to lay out practical policy solutions and to devise a comprehensive and unified plan of action for combatting these economic and social disparities. This authoritative book is accessible to policy makers, students, and the general public interested in how to craft a brighter future by building a sustainable, green, and inclusive society in the years ahead.

India Emerging Book Excerpt:

India, like most democratic developing nations, is prone to populist politics. In the search of votes, politicians look for popular solutions with mass appeal. Some popular solutions benefit the poor, some hurt the economy. Poor economics leads to falling numbers. Falling numbers get statistically captured as economic data. And, the impact of such economic data is immense. This data can lift or crash currency markets, stock markets, affect credit ratings, fuel inflation, affect new investments and even result in mass layoffs. However, there is always a story behind the data. These stories are guided mostly by executive decisions. Some decisions are far-reaching and beneficial to the masses, some cater to political vote banks, some are guided by increasing activism, some serve the need for social justice, some are aimed at environmental protection, while some are simply driven by the greed of power or wealth. This is the story of every regime. The book narrates this compelling data story in a layman's language. Even where data is wrong it leaves behind a tell-tale mark of anomalies, which trips the economy sooner than later. Fudged, incorrect or lazily collected data is worse than genuine but unimpressive data as you do not know what to correct. India Emerging thus captures this dialogue on the pros and cons of economic and political decisions that can be understood by the common voter who is neither an economist nor an academician.

Fear Less Face Not Good Enough to Replace Your Doubts Achieve Your Goals and Unlock Your Success Book Excerpt:

From one of the world’s top performance psychologists—a proven framework for overcoming the primary obstacle to success: fear In more than 20 years helping leaders and athletes reach their true potential, renowned sports psychologist and culture coach Dr. Pippa Grange has found that even the most successful people experience fears of inadequacy. What sets them apart is their ability to pinpoint their fears and “turn down the volume.” In Fear Less, Grange walks you through the process of identifying and facing the fears that manifest in perfectionism, jealousy, self-criticism, and harsh judgment, and replacing those fears with acceptance, purpose, passion, or laughter―to name just a few. And she provides effective fear-management techniques for facing moments of critical pressure, including: Processing – through conscious tactics that bring the mind back to where you want it: the job at hand Distraction – deliberately focusing on other tasks when there’s nothing active to be done about what you actually fear Rationalization – drawing on the actual facts and evidence to talk yourself through the situation Our hidden fears are what make us feel our lives aren’t enough, that prompt us to spend our time worrying about competition, status, and control. Fear is what turns life into a battle, telling us we need to hide our real selves and that we’re not good enough. Fear Less gives you the tools you need to practice your responses to fear in the same way elite athletes train for and perform at a big game―with equally dramatic results. You’ll gain the knowledge and insight you need to change your perspective and move beyond fear to a place of joy, fulfillment, and meaning.

Guinea Book Excerpt:

This paper discusses Guinea’s Third Review Under the Extended Credit Facility Arrangement, Request for Modification of Performance Criterion and Financing Assurances Review. Performance against end-December 2018 targets was satisfactory. All performance criteria and the indicative target (IT) on social safety net spending were met. A strong package of adjustment measures was implemented to achieve the end-2018 fiscal target. The ITs on tax revenue and the accumulation of new domestic arrears were not met. Program performance was satisfactory at end-March 2019, with most ITs met. Program-supported reforms advanced. Two of the four structural benchmarks were met, with substantial progress on the other two and full completion expected by. Additional adjustment measures are expected to be implemented to achieve a basic fiscal surplus in 2019, compensating for anticipated higher electricity subsidies and lower tax revenue. In parallel, public investment will be scaled-up to support growth. Advancing programmed tax measures and applying the petroleum prices adjustment mechanism will be key to support revenue mobilization.

The Ecology of Tropical East Asia Book Excerpt:

Tropical East Asia is home to over one billion people and faces massive human impacts from its rising population and rapid economic growth. It has already lost more than half of its forest cover to agriculture and urbanization, and has the highest rates of deforestation and logging in the tropics. Habitat loss, coupled with hunting and the relentless trade in wildlife products, threatens all its large and many of its smaller vertebrates. Despite these problems, the region still supports an estimated 15-25% of global terrestrial biodiversity and a growing environmental awareness means that it is no longer assumed that economic development justifies environmental damage, and no longer accepted that this trade-off is inevitable. Effective conservation action now depends on integrating a clear understanding of the ecological patterns and processes in the region with the varied needs of its human population. This third edition continues to provide an overview of the terrestrial ecology of Tropical East Asia: from southern China to Indonesia, and from Bhutan and Bangladesh to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. It retains the balance between compactness and comprehensiveness of the previous editions, and the even-handed geographical treatment of the whole region, but it updates both the contents and the perspective. Approximately one third of the text is new or greatly modified, reflecting the explosion of new research in the region in the last few years and the increasing use of new tools, particularly from genomics and remote sensing. The change in perspective largely reflects the growing realization that we are in a new epoch, the Anthropocene, in which human activities have at least as large an influence as natural processes, and that stopping or reversing ecological change is no longer an option. This does not mean that biodiversity conservation is no longer possible or worthwhile, but that the biodiverse future we strive for will inevitably be very different from the past. The Ecology of Tropical East Asia is an advanced textbook suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate level students taking courses on the terrestrial ecology of the East Asian tropics, as well as an authoritative regional reference for professional ecologists, conservationists, and interested amateurs worldwide.

The European Environmental Conscience in EU Politics Book Excerpt:

Based on empirical studies of European energy and environmental policies, this book suggests that, in combination, these two policy fields form a consensus in the EU which might also become the basis for a new European ideology, namely European ‘sustainabilism’. It asks why an environmental conscience has grown since the late 1960s in the industrialised world and shows that whilst there is undeniable environmental degradation during this time, and that a European environmental conscience has mainly developed through successive steps of European integration in energy policy. In this connection between energy and the environmental we find one driver for European integration and indeed European identity. If sustainabilism should become a European ideology, it will substantially influence the way future Europeans will live. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of European Studies, International Relations, Political Science, History, Economics, Sustainability Studies, Environmental and Energy Policies in Europe.

Change Management and Business Process Management as enabler of the Digital Transformation Book Excerpt:

Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, LMU Munich (ISTO), language: English, abstract: This thesis provides support for practitioners in user-centric decision making to facilitate identifying and managing involved changes and opportunities on the human side of IT implementation, aligning CM, BPM and supplementary Design Thinking concepts and methods and building a connection to derived fields of action and corresponding recommendations, as well proposing time-allocation for implementation phases that represent life cycles of such projects. Those management disciplines on the basis of gained findings can provide reasonable support for practitioners in user-centric managerial decision making. Digital Transformation (DT) is currently a major trend. Diverse application of IT systems within the working environment such as cloud-based collaborative solutions, drew the attention of the business world to assess potential benefits, arising challenges and incurred costs of DT for organizations and their workforce. While DT initiatives often aim to integrate digital technology into areas of business and are initiated and communicated by management on a strategic level at the beginning, challenging operative digitalization and transformation is conducted by external or internal project teams in IT implementation projects. Despite great initial enthusiasm around digital topics and introducing new IT solutions, most planned change processes in organizations do not achieve the desired result. While extensive recommendations for managerial decision making on this topic were proposed in current literature, most recommended fields of action and interventions provided only high-level support lacking ideas for practical execution. Thus, expanding research in this field on investigating the practical realization of IT implementation projects was demanded.

The Transhumanism Handbook Book Excerpt:

Modern humanity with some 5,000 years of recorded history has been experiencing growing pains, with no end in sight. It is high time for humanity to grow up and to transcend itself by embracing transhumanism. Transhumanism offers the most inclusive ideology for all ethnicities and races, the religious and the atheists, conservatives and liberals, the young and the old regardless of socioeconomic status, gender identity, or any other individual qualities. This book expounds on contemporary views and practical advice from more than 70 transhumanists. Astronaut Neil Armstrong said on the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, “One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Transhumanism is the next logical step in the evolution of humankind, and it is the existential solution to the long-term survival of the human race.
