Description : Periodic Differential Equations: An Introduction to Mathieu, Lamé, and Allied Functions covers the fundamental problems and techniques of solution of periodic differential equations. This book is composed of 10 chapters that present important equations and the special functions they generate, ranging from Mathieu's equation to the intractable ellipsoidal wave equation. This book starts with a survey of the main problems related to the formation of periodic differential equations. The subsequent chapters deal with the general theory of Mathieu's equation, Mathieu functions of integral order, and the principles of asymptotic expansions. These topics are followed by discussions of the stable and unstable solutions of Mathieu's general equation; general properties and characteristic exponent of Hill's equation; and the general nature and solutions of the spheroidal wave equation. The concluding chapters explore the polynomials, orthogonality properties, and integral relations of Lamé's equation. These chapters also describe the wave functions and solutions of the ellipsoidal wave equation. This book will prove useful to pure and applied mathematicians and functional analysis.

Description : Who first presented Pascal's triangle? (It was not Pascal.) Who first presented Hamiltonian graphs? (It was not Hamilton.) Who first presented Steiner triple systems? (It was not Steiner.) The history of mathematics is a well-studied and vibrant area of research, with books and scholarly articles published on various aspects of the subject. Yet, the history of combinatorics seems to have been largely overlooked. This book goes some way to redress this and serves two main purposes: 1) it constitutes the first book-length survey of the history of combinatorics; and 2) it assembles, for the first time in a single source, researches on the history of combinatorics that would otherwise be inaccessible to the general reader. Individual chapters have been contributed by sixteen experts. The book opens with an introduction by Donald E. Knuth to two thousand years of combinatorics. This is followed by seven chapters on early combinatorics, leading from Indian and Chinese writings on permutations to late-Renaissance publications on the arithmetical triangle. The next seven chapters trace the subsequent story, from Euler's contributions to such wide-ranging topics as partitions, polyhedra, and latin squares to the 20th century advances in combinatorial set theory, enumeration, and graph theory. The book concludes with some combinatorial reflections by the distinguished combinatorialist, Peter J. Cameron. This book is not expected to be read from cover to cover, although it can be. Rather, it aims to serve as a valuable resource to a variety of audiences. Combinatorialists with little or no knowledge about the development of their subject will find the historical treatment stimulating. A historian of mathematics will view its assorted surveys as an encouragement for further research in combinatorics. The more general reader will discover an introduction to a fascinating and too little known subject that continues to stimulate and inspire the work of scholars today.

Description : Described even today as "unsurpassed," this history of mathematical notation stretching back to the Babylonians and Egyptians is one of the most comprehensive written. In two impressive volumes-first published in 1928-9-distinguished mathematician Florian Cajori shows the origin, evolution, and dissemination of each symbol and the competition it faced in its rise to popularity or fall into obscurity. Illustrated with more than a hundred diagrams and figures, this "mirror of past and present conditions in mathematics" will give students and historians a whole new appreciation for "1 + 1 = 2."Swiss-American author, educator, and mathematician FLORIAN CAJORI (1859-1930) was one of the world's most distinguished mathematical historians. Appointed to a specially created chair in the history of mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, he also wrote An Introduction to the Theory of Equations, A History of Elementary Mathematics, and The Chequered Career of Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler.

Description : After two volumes mainly introductory, Dr Needham now embarks upon his systematic study of the development of the natural sciences in China. The Sciences of the Earth follow: geography and cartography, geology, seismology and mineralogy. Dr Needham distinguishes parallel traditions of scientific cartography and religious cosmography in East and West, discussing orbocentric wheel-maps, the origins of the rectangular grid system, sailing charts and relief maps, Chinese survey methods, and the impact of Renaissance cartography on the East. Finally-and here Dr Needham's work has no Western predecessors-there are full accounts of the Chinese contribution to geology and mineralogy.

Description : James Joseph Sylvester (1814-97) was an English mathematician who made key contributions to numerous areas of his field and was also of primary importance in the development of American mathematics, both as inaugural Professor of Mathematics at Johns Hopkins University and founder of the American Journal of Mathematics. Originally published in 1908, this book forms the second in four volumes of Sylvester's mathematical papers, covering the period from 1854 to 1873. Together these volumes provide a comprehensive resource that will be of value to anyone with an interest in Sylvester's theories and the history of mathematics.

Description : This volume is a part of the comprehensive study about social problems that India is facing at present. The whole study is divided into five volumes. This Volume Two deals with various fields of social work in India and is the Fifth revised edition of the earlier volume published in 1967. The fields covered have been discussed under five heads. Part One deals with concept and scope of social work as well as history of social work in U.K., U.S.A. and India. Part Two examines the social welfare services being provided for children, women, youth, labour and backward classes; urban and rural welfare; family welfare and housing. Part Three deals with social security measures and services for the handicapped. Part Four is concerned with social administration and legislation. Part Five deals with international welfare agencies and examines critically the state of welfare services being provided in India. Part Six deals with developments which have taken place in this field since 1973 when the second edition was brought out.
