Properties of Aluminum Alloys Book Excerpt:

A compilation of data collected and maintained for many years as the property of a large aluminum company, which decided in 1997 to make it available to other engineers and materials specialists. In tabular form, presents data on the tensile and creep properties of eight species of wrought alloys and five species of cast alloys in the various shapes used in applications. Then looks at the fatigue data for several alloys under a range of conditions and loads. The data represent the typical or average findings, and though some were developed years ago, the collection is the largest and most detailed available. There is no index.

Multicomponent Phase Diagrams Applications for Commercial Aluminum Alloys Book Excerpt:

Despite decades of extensive research and application, commercial aluminum alloys are still poorly understood in terms of the phase composition and phase transformations occurring during solidification, cooling, and heating. Multicomponent Phase Diagrams: Applications for Commercial Aluminum Alloys aims to apply multi-component phase diagrams to commercial aluminum alloys, and give a comprehensive coverage of available and assessed phase diagrams for aluminum-based alloy systems of different dimensionality. Features data on non-equilibrium phase diagrams, which can rarely be obtained from other publications Extensive coverage of all groups of commercially important alloys and materials

Aluminum Dreams Book Excerpt:

How aluminum enabled a high-speed, gravity-defying American modernity even as other parts of the world paid the price in environmental damage and political turmoil. Aluminum shaped the twentieth century. It enabled high-speed travel and gravity-defying flight. It was the material of a streamlined aesthetic that came to represent modernity. And it became an essential ingredient in industrial and domestic products that ranged from airplanes and cars to designer chairs and artificial Christmas trees. It entered modern homes as packaging, foil, pots and pans and even infiltrated our bodies through food, medicine, and cosmetics. In Aluminum Dreams, Mimi Sheller describes how the materiality and meaning of aluminum transformed modern life and continues to shape the world today. Aluminum, Sheller tells us, changed mobility and mobilized modern life. It enabled air power, the space age and moon landings. Yet, as Sheller makes clear, aluminum was important not only in twentieth-century technology, innovation, architecture, and design but also in underpinning global military power, uneven development, and crucial environmental and health concerns. Sheller describes aluminum's shiny utopia but also its dark side. The unintended consequences of aluminum's widespread use include struggles for sovereignty and resource control in Africa, India, and the Caribbean; the unleashing of multinational corporations; and the pollution of the earth through mining and smelting (and the battle to save it). Using a single material as an entry point to understanding a global history of modernization and its implications for the future, Aluminum Dreams forces us to ask: How do we assemble the material culture of modernity and what are its environmental consequences? Aluminum Dreams includes a generous selection of striking images of iconic aluminum designs, many in color, drawn from advertisements by Alcoa, Bohn, Kaiser, and other major corporations, pamphlets, films, and exhibitions.

Weldability of High strength Aluminum Alloys Book Excerpt:

This memorandum describes the fusion-welding characteristics, mechanical properties, and stress-corrosion behavior of high-strength, weldable aluminum alloys. These are defined as alloys in which sound welds can be produced and in which at least 50 and 70 percent of the maximum base-metal strength can be retained in the as-welded and post-weld-treated conditions, respectively. Careful selection of joining method and filler metals as well as close control of joining-process parameters is necessary to produce high-strength aluminum weldments. Highest strengths and weld-joint efficiencies in high-strength weldable alloys are achieved with the use of postweld aging and/or mechanical treatments. The best combination of highest strengths and good welding characteristics is found in the 2000 and 7000 alloy series. As compared with the 2000 and 5000 alloy series, the 7000 alloy as a class suffer three major property disadvantages: (1) their tendency to be notch sensitive, (2) their tendency to exhibit low toughness at low temperatures, and (3) their much greater susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking. Nonetheless, several relatively new 7000 series alloys have been developed which show reasonably good notch toughness to -423 F and which are considered competitive with the 2219 and 2014 alloys for cryogenic applications. Studies of the Aluminum uranium Alloying Reaction Book Excerpt:

It was found in this investigation that an alloying reaction occurred wherever and whenever clean metallic surfaces of aluminum and uranium were brought into contact within the temperature range of 250OC to 450oC. Anodization of the aluminum surface prevented the alloying reaction. The effects of temperature. aluminum purity, and pressure between the metal surfaces on the alloying reaction were studied qualitatively. The alloying reaction produced UAl3, which appeared to be formed by the diffusion of the uranium through the UAl3 layer. (MM).
