America Between the Wars 1919 1941 Book Excerpt:

"With the Great Depression, the growth of a consumerist mass culture, the reshaping of government under Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, and intense debates over race and the role of women, the 22 years of peace that spanned America's involvement in two world conflicts was a period of exceptional social, political, economic, and cultural upheaval in the United States. This compact, yet authoritative, collection places over seventy of the most important documents from 1919-1941 in their historical context and offers insights into the American experience during the interwar era and the many developments that were crucial to the creation of present-day United States. Taking in such familiar names as Warren Harding, Charles Lindbergh, and Franklin Roosevelt as well as writings by the ordinary people who had little individual control over the sweeping changes and developments of a tumultuous age, this collection provides coverage of the themes, struggles, and events that characterized the 1920s and 1930s. With photographs and illustrations, end-of-chapter questions, and coverage of topics from new trends in literature to isolationism and the debate over American involvement in World War II, this book invites readers to engage actively in historical interpretation and to gain a thorough understanding of the interplay between social and political forces in the historical developments of the period"--

Christmas at Emelia s Book Excerpt:

This Christmas join the De La Fuentes and McKenzies in Blossom Creek as they celebrate the grand opening of Emelia’s Restaurant. Over twenty years after Levi De La Fuente's parents opened the first Emelia’s, Levi and his cousin Ryan are getting ready to open a second location. Emma De La Fuente manages the first Emelia’s in Essex, Vermont for her parents. She’s in town to assist her brother and cousin in getting the new restaurant ready for its grand opening. However, she didn’t plan on the strong attraction she feels toward the town Sheriff. The man with his sweet words and heated looks has managed to derail her plans on returning home. While his sister is distracted, Levi finds himself in need of rescuing from a rather embarrassing situation. Luckily for him, Vivien Taylor, owner of Temptations, Blossom Creek’s handmade chocolate store, appears just at the right time. If only he didn’t crave the sweet woman, then maybe, this situation wouldn’t be so awkward. Blossom Creek just might be warm enough to melt the snow this holiday season.

America Book Excerpt:

It is 2014, and the United States is only a shell of its former self. After years of careful and methodical planning, the military has just pulled off a deadly coup that leaves every politician and government official dead. As the remaining super powers turn on each other, they begin destroying what is left of the civilized world. After a year of unrest, self-proclaimed president Jonas Bennett rules the American Republic with an iron fist and no regard for the US Constitution. He leaves the citizens of North America with only two choices: submit to him and his evil army of traitors, or fight for freedom. Joe Randall, his wife, and their children watch in horror as their world disappears before their eyes, and they wish for only one thing-to live in peace in their North Carolina home. But fate has a different plan in mind for Randall; he soon realizes it is up to him and his liberty-loving patriots to take up arms against the new regime. "America" is the gripping story of a courageous freedom fighter caught up in an unforgettable battle of good versus evil as he battles against a superior force to save the only world he has ever known from destruction.

Speaking with the Dead in Early America Book Excerpt:

In late medieval Catholicism, mourners employed an array of practices to maintain connection with the deceased—most crucially, the belief in purgatory, a middle place between heaven and hell where souls could be helped by the actions of the living. In the early sixteenth century, the Reformation abolished purgatory, as its leaders did not want attention to the dead diminishing people's devotion to God. But while the Reformation was supposed to end communication between the living and dead, it turns out the result was in fact more complicated than historians have realized. In the three centuries after the Reformation, Protestants imagined continuing relationships with the dead, and the desire for these relations came to form an important—and since neglected—aspect of Protestant belief and practice. In Speaking with the Dead in Early America, historian Erik R. Seeman undertakes a 300-year history of Protestant communication with the dead. Seeman chronicles the story of Protestants' relationships with the deceased from Elizabethan England to puritan New England and then on through the American Enlightenment into the middle of the nineteenth century with the explosion of interest in Spiritualism. He brings together a wide range of sources to uncover the beliefs and practices of both ordinary people, especially women, and religious leaders. This prodigious research reveals how sermons, elegies, and epitaphs portrayed the dead as speaking or being spoken to, how ghost stories and Gothic fiction depicted a permeable boundary between this world and the next, and how parlor songs and funeral hymns encouraged singers to imagine communication with the dead. Speaking with the Dead in Early America thus boldly reinterprets Protestantism as a religion in which the dead played a central role.
