Description : Excerpt from The American Phrenological Journal and Miscellany, Vol. 1: May 1, 1839 There is one more topic connected with this part of the subject upon which we would remark, viz. The nomenclature of phrenology. We cannot better introduce what we have to say, than by quoting the language of Dr. Whately, published in the second number of this Journal, page 47. I am convinced that, even if all connection of the brain with the mind were regarded not merely as doubtful, but as a perfect chimera, still the treatises of many phrenological writers, especially yours, (mr. Combe's, ) would be of great value, from their employing a metaphysical nomenclature far more accurate, logical, and convenient, than Locke, Stewart, and other writers of their schools. Higher authority on this subject than Dr. Whately could not be cited. But the testimony of many persons of high authority might be quoted. Even the opponents of phrenology will express their admiration of its classification and nomenclature; and that, too, while they profess entire unbelief in the truth of the system, not reflecting that this excellency is an important argument in favour of its truth.' Simplicity and clearness are only attributes of truth; and the principle is without exception, that of two systems, that which is most simple and clear is most accordant with truth. Such ever has, and ever will be, the verdict of mankind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Description : Excerpt from The American Phrenological Journal and Miscellany, 1840, Vol. 2 Accordingly, an edict was issued, on the ninth of January, 1802, by the Austrian government, prohibiting all private lectures, unless a special permission was obtained from the public authorities. Dr. Gall presented to the oflicers of government a very able remonstrance in defence of his views, and in favour of public lectures on the same; but it was all in vain, and the efforts of his friends in his behalf were equally unavailing. Gall, finding that all prospect of communicating and defending publicly his new discoveries, in Austria, was cut 03, determined to seek a country whose government was more liberal and tolerant. He had now passed the meridian of life - {being in the forty-fifth year of his ags) - had spent the best of his days at Vienna, and there hoped in peace to live, labour, and die'; but mom was dearer to him than ease, pleasure, wealth, or honour. Few can con ceive the immense sacrifice which he must have made in giving up an extensive professional business and public confidence, in breaking away from the society of all his acquaintances and relatives, and leaving what had then become more valuable, in his estimation, than all the rest, the greater portion of his craniological specimens, which he had been more than thirty years in collecting. Description : Excerpt from The American Phrenological Journal and Miscellany, 1841, Vol. 3 In the fall of 1807, and the succeeding winter, Dr. Gall, assisted by Spurzheim, delivered several courses of lectures and demonstra tions in Paris, which produced quite an impression on the minds of the Parisians. On the 14th of May, 1808, they presented a joint memoir on the anatomy of the brain, containing an exposition of their discoveries, to the French Institute. This memoir was referred by the institute to a committee of five, the chairman of which was the celebrated Cuvier. Their report was favourable to Gall and Spurzheim in some parts - they diflered from them in others; and as to some of their discoveries, they very unjustly gave the merit to other anatomists. In the following year, Gall and Spurzheim published an extended reply to this report, vindicating their claims to originality, and maintaining the utility of their disco veries, as well as the truth of their demonstrations, with so much vigour and perspicuity, that no answer was ever made to it on the part of the institute. They now commenced the preparation of their great work on the Anatomy and Physiology of the Nervous System in general, and of the Bram in particular. Spurzheim assisted in getting out only the two first volumes; the two remaining were prepared by Gall alone, and were not completed till the year 1819. The whole work was accompanied with a splendid folio atlas, containing one hundred plates. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Description : Excerpt from The American Phrenological Journal and Miscellany, Vol. 10 Man requires amusement as much as he requires food or breath; because the former is as imperiously demanded by a primitive faculty and law of his being as the latter. Nor can any thing be made to con tribute more to his intellectual and moral improvement, and especially to his social enjoyments, than. Such amusements as might be devised and executed. They could and should he made a most powerful instru mentality for binding all the members of every community inseparably together, in bonds of the most friendly affinity; and thus substitute the most cordial good feeling for those strifes and animosities which now mar and deprave all our communities. See how our thanksgivings bind together families and neighborhoods. Nor will any thing recruit the body and nerve the intellect for powerful exertions more effectually than the best forms of recreation can be made to do. Nor is any thing more promotive of all the vital functions - digestion, gii'cuimiod, respiration, perspiration, muscular action, etc.-than the hearty laugh and certainly nothing more effectually rouses all the dormant energies of our being. Nor do I believe any medicines could be employed which would as soon or as efi'ectually make the patient forget his pains, or invigorate the sys tem to expel maladies. And certainly nothing is more promotive of lon gevity. Nor are many things as injurious to health, talents, morals, .or long life, as long-faced Stoicism, or melancholy sobriety. Let na, then, have amusements - purified, laughter-moving, inspiring, and instructiw public uvszuznts - and of course times and seasons set apart for this purpose. Historians will appreciate period reports on the Charge of the Light Brigade, the caning of Senator Sumner, an attack on the President, John Brown Jr, the attack on Lawrence Kansas, and a large chapter on bleeding Kansas.
