Turkey s Strategic Position at the Crossroads of World Affairs Book Excerpt:

"By virtue of its strategic location at the intersection of Europe and Asia, Turkey plays a pivotal role in the post-cold war system of states. It lies, one could say, at the epicenter of a series of conflicts, real and potential, in both continents. It also has enjoyed noticeable growth in both economic prosperity and democracy since 1980. And because Turkey has been, and remains, a faithful U.S. ally, Washington has called upon it to play a role in the Balkans, Near East, and former Soviet empire commensurate with its new-found political and economic development. "This report analyzes the implications of Turkey's policies and the reactions of Turkey's neighbors in three discrete chapters. The authors focus their conclusions and options for U.S. policymakers on the effect of Turkish policies in Europe, the Middle East, and the former Soviet republics The final chapter summarizes their conclusions with respect to the three regions that are so important in the search for peace and stability in these regions. Thomas at the Crossroads Book Excerpt:

The Gospel of Thomas is one of the most debated early Christian writings. Discovered as a Coptic translation in the Nag Hammadi Library, its date, message and relation to the canonical gospels have been the subject of much divisive argument. This book offers new perspectives on the gospel and demonstrates the various ways in which it sheds light on the ideological and social history of early Christianity.Expert scholars go to the heart of current issues in Thomasine studies, such as the role of oral and written traditions in the composition of the gospel, Thomas' relationship with the Gospel of John and with Gnostic and ascetic tendencies in early Christianity, the gospel's attitude to women followers of Jesus and to Jewish ritual practices.

International Education at the Crossroads Book Excerpt:

International Education at the Crossroads captures the essence and complexity of international education in an interconnected and globalized world. Written by leading scholars, international educators, and policy makers, the 26 essays in this volume take stock of the unpredictable landscape of international education and demonstrate why international higher education is more essential now than ever before. Responding to a timely global moment where education and international engagement are being redefined and practiced in new ways, the authors call for a reconsideration of paradigms and critical reflection of the entire field of international education. At the same time, the authors show how international education is an imperative for the future of learning and the world, and also, crucially, that this work cannot be done in a silo. International Education at the Crossroads offers readers a chance to join in the conversation that is as global as it is meaningful in communities, the lives of learners, and institutions around the world. International education requires that everyone the world over work together to produce new knowledge, to navigate the "crossroads," and to collectively chart the directions in which the field will move into the future.

Protestant Theology at the Crossroads Book Excerpt:

Crucial tasks face protestant theology in its currently critical state. Challenged with growing skepticism and discouragement, what hope has theology for the future, and what sources might deliver this hope? Gerhard Sauter sets himself to help theology answer critical questions and accomplish essential tasks in order to move forward with hope."Protestant Theology at the Crossroads" examines contextual theology, in which particular cultural heritages, race and gender, and economic conditions and the structure of social life inform the teachings of the faith rather than vice versa. How, for example, do we approach the crisis in American self-understanding caused by terrorism? Do changes in European politics change our theological perceptions?Drawing on the Warfield Lectures at Princeton in March 2000 -- at which many of these chapters were presented originally -- "Protestant Theology" does more than provide a much-needed overall explanation of the issues theology faces. It also contains basic information on the foundation of theology, hermeneutics, Christian ethics, many central doctrinal topics, and much more. This book is a vital text for those studying theology, involved in ministry, and training future church leaders.

Language Contacts at the Crossroads of Disciplines Book Excerpt:

This volume offers a cross-disciplinary insight into language contact research, bringing together fresh empirical and theoretical studies from various fields concerning different dimensions of language contact and variation, second language acquisition and translation. In the present-day world of globalization, population mobility and information technology, the themes of multilingualism and contact-induced language change are as topical as ever, and research on language contacts and cross-linguistic influence has expanded rapidly during the last few decades. Along with the increasing specialization of related disciplines, their research perspectives, methods and terminology have become dispersed, although language contact phenomena themselves can rarely be confined within the scope of a single discipline. This collection of articles creates dialogue between researchers from different scientific backgrounds, thus viewing language contact phenomena from a broader perspective. When language contact is re-defined to include the mental or cognitive level of contact between different languages and varieties in the minds of language learners or translators, salient links are created between the different disciplines dealing with this subject matter.

At the Crossroads Lessons and Challenges in Computational Social Science Book Excerpt:

The interest of physicists in economic and social questions is not new: for over four decades, we have witnessed the emergence of what is called nowadays “sociophysics” and “econophysics”, vigorous and challenging areas within the wider “Interdisciplinary Physics”. With tools borrowed from Statistical Physics and Complexity, this new area of study have already made important contributions, which in turn have fostered the development of novel theoretical foundations in Social Science and Economics, via mathematical approaches, agent-based modelling and numerical simulations. From these foundations, Computational Social Science has grown to incorporate as well the empirical component --aided by the recent data deluge from the Web 2.0 and 3.0--, closing in this way the experiment-theory cycle in the best tradition of Physics.

At the Crossroads Book Excerpt:

In 1996, only five African countries had internet connectivity. In 2001, all the countries on the continent had connectivity, and in the early part of the twenty- first century, Africa has experienced the fastest rate in growth of internet usage in the world. Yet this is only part of the story. To date, Africa remains the least connected continent in the world, and registers some of the greatest disparities and inequalities in access to ICTs. The digital divide is still very much a reality. The contributors to this volume provide invaluable information on the development and use of ICTs in Kenya and East Africa. Specifically, they raise questions about ICT policy and implementation, the respective roles of the public and private sectors, and the application of ICTs in government, education and various industries. Based on empirical research, the authors demonstrate the considerable progress that has been made in the region to promote ICT initiatives and projects as part of the wider development agenda. They also explore the many challenges the next stage of ICT development is encountering, defined as infrastructural, technical, regulatory, distributional, social, cultural and economic. Finally, the contributors consider the development of ICTs in wider continental and global contexts. They examine the complex intersections, interactions and sometime contradictions between ICTs in Africa, the information society, knowledge economies, education, literacy and enlightenment, socio-economic development, culture, language and globalisation. This is a co-publication with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in Canada
