Atlas of the Pig Gut Book Excerpt:

Atlas of the Pig Gut: Research and Techniques from Birth to Adulthood examines the development of the gastrointestinal tract in swine. It focuses on changes occurring during the developmental phase, with an emphasis on the gut that is reflected in alterations of the intestinal mucosa architecture. Led by leading experts in pig digestion research, the book contains descriptions and microphotographs of the most updated research. The changes occurring in the intestine are presented in a comprehensive order, from small magnifications of tissue structures to high magnifications of fragments of epithelium-building cell structures. Additionally, the book highlights the replacement mechanism of epithelial cells during the development of the small intestinal mucosa. This book is the ideal resource for animal science researchers and practitioners. In addition, swine veterinarians and academics will also find it useful due to its helpful, detailed graphics and organized structure. Discusses microscopic techniques for observing changes in the gastrointestinal mucosa structure and guidelines for avoiding common analysis errors Features original micrographs obtained from light, confocal and scanning electron microscopy Provides carefully-worded directions for learning the basic mammalian anatomy and morphology of the gut

Atlas of Interstitial Cells of Cajal in the Gastrointestinal Tract Book Excerpt:

This atlas will illustrate the distribution and morphological features of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) which are the key cells to understanding of the regulatory mechanism of gastrointestinal motility, since ICC act as both pacemaker and as intermediates in neural transmission, and since ICC show specific distribution patterns depending on their anatomical positions. All subtypes of ICC located in the different tissue layers and different levels of the gastrointestinal tract will be revealed by immunohistochemistry for Kit receptors and nerves by using mainly whole-mount stretch preparation of the guinea-pig tissues. Three-dimensional reconstruction of confocal images will particularly help the readers to understand the peculiar arrangement of ICC networks in situ and the correlation between ICC and nerves. Electron micrographs will help illustrate the characteristic features of ICC and their ultrastructural differences from fibroblasts, smooth muscles and other interstitial cells.

Isolation of Lactic Acid Related Bacteria from the Pig Mucosal Proximal Gastrointestinal Tract Including Olsenella Umbonata Sp Nov and Veillonella Magna Sp Nov Book Excerpt:

Whose habitat is this? What are their geno-, pheno- and ecotypes? These fervent questions in gastrointestinal microbiology are still, for the most part, unanswered when it comes to what decisively influences pig host nutrition and health: the individual bacterial species of the porcine mucosal gastric and small intestinal microbiota. Lactic acid-producing bacteria in syntrophism with lactic acid-fermenting bacteria, i.e. communities of 'lactic acid-related bacteria' (LARB), constitute the predominant and generally most beneficial part of this microbiota. The present book gives answers to the aforesaid questions. Outlined in six major chapters, the book starts off by reviewing the microecology of the pig proximal gastrointestinal tract as well as the different groups of LARB (chapter II). This leads over to the methodological chapters III and IV which explain the application of two newly developed culture-based approaches for isolation of novel species of manganese catalase-positive lactobacilli and mucin-fermenting LARB. Chapters V and VI contain the valid taxonomic descriptions of two novel LARB species, namely Olsenella umbonata Kraatz et al. 2011 and Veillonella magna Kraatz and Taras 2008 from porcine mucosal jejunum. Chapter VIII ends the book with a discussion of the ecological status, niches and host relationship of O. umbonata and V. magna, thus taking the reader back to the microecology of chapter II.

Pathology of Pediatric Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease provides the pediatric pathologist, the GI or general pathologist, and the pediatric gastroenterologist with the most complete and current reference on the subject. With an emphasis on clinical-pathological correlation, the book includes in-depth discussions on disorders and issues that are frequently encountered but for which up-to-date information is often not readily available, as well as infrequent disorders unique or specific to children that are not covered in standard texts. Among the topics considered are malabsorption and motility disorders, immunodeficiencies, including AIDS, developmental malformations, food allergies, cystic diseases of the liver, hepatic tumors, and esophageal and pancreatic disorders. Many new illustrations and electron micrographs are included in this edition, and the high-quality endoscopic and radiographic images permit ready correlation with the pathologic principles under discussion.

Diagnostic Pathology of the Intestinal Mucosa - An Atlas and Review of Biopsy Interpretation offers a comprehensive overview of intestinal mucosal structure as defined through peroral or endoscopic biopsy specimens obtained in normal and disease states. It describes small intestinal biopsy pathology in conjunction with morphologic, functional, and pathophysiologic correlations. Routine methods of processing tissues for light microscopy, electron microscopy, histochemistry, and light- and electron- microscopic-immunoperoxidase techniques are presented so that the novice in the area of intestinal structure may have an easily accessible reference for setting up a morphologic laboratory.
