Description : By connecting Shakespeare's language to the stunning artwork that depicted the end of the world, this study provides not only provides a new reading of Shakespeare but illustrates how apocalyptic art continues to influence popular culture today. Drawing on extant examples of medieval imagery, Roger Christofides uses poststructuralist and psychoanalytic accounts of how language works to shed new light on our understanding of Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, and King Lear. He then links Shakespeare's dependence on his audience to appreciate the allusions made to the religious paintings to the present day. For instance, popular television series like Battlestar Galactica, seminal horror movies such as An American Werewolf in London and Carrie and recent novels like Cormac McCarthy's The Road. All draw on imagery that can be traced directly back to the depictions of the Doom, an indication of the cultural power these vivid imaginings of the end of the world have in Shakespeare's day and now.

Description : Due to rapidly aging populations, the number of people worldwide experiencing dementia is increasing, and the projections are grim. Despite billions of dollars invested in medical research, no effective treatment has been discovered for Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia. The Alzheimer Conundrum exposes the predicaments embedded in current efforts to slow down or halt Alzheimer’s disease through early detection of pre-symptomatic biological changes in healthy individuals. Based on a meticulous account of the history of Alzheimer’s disease and extensive in-depth interviews, Margaret Lock highlights the limitations and the dissent associated with biomarker detection. Lock argues that basic research must continue, but should be complemented by a public health approach to prevention that is economically feasible, more humane, and much more effective globally than one exclusively focused on an increasingly harried search for a cure.

Description : For the past 60 years, there have been a lot of desperate people on the planet who claim to be targeted by a sinister government plot to torture and harass them. These people are known as Targeted Individuals (TIs). Targeted Individuals claim to hear disembodied voices in their heads and experience severe physiological discomfiture, such as mind- and body-control at the hands of their attackers – so-called “Perpetrators” – a breed of human beings known to ruthlessly torture their victims, the Targeted Individuals, and electronically control them using remote radio frequencies and satellite terrorism. The act of hearing voices that are not there is called V2k, or “Voice-to-Skull”, in the vernacular. It is a continuous nightmare for the millions of Targeted Individuals who are subjected to it; an incurable condition that, once acquired, is a lifelong sentence of neverending horror and torture that is as indescribable as it is inhumane. “The Radiohead Protocol”, the third book in the V2k trilogy of books that started several years ago with “The 7 Keys to V2k” and “The Truth Will Set You Free”, is the definitive response to long-unanswered questions about V2k, the book that lifts the lid off the entire mind-control industry run by the Perpetrators in the United States and the rest of the world. “The Radiohead Protocol” addresses vital subjects such as, where does V2k/mind-control come from? How did we come to be V2k/mind-controlled? How is V2k/mind-control administered? And of course, the biggest question of all: How do we, as Targeted Individuals, free ourselves from it? Definitive answers could not be found in the 20th and early 21st centuries. But at last, the information has become available: the secrets of electromagnetic mind-control – V2k or Voice-to-Skull – are no longer the insufferable mystery (or misery) that they once were, thanks to the trilogy series including “The Radiohead Protocol”, the final instalment. It takes the reader on a journey to the past, to witness the very creation of V2k by the inventor of electromagnetic mind-control. He was not only a founding father of the New Age movement in the mid to late 20th Century, but a member of the Military Industrial Complex; an academic with a special interest in reading other people’s minds; a lifelong ambition which he managed to fulfil during his industrious career. Far from being a footnote in history, the inventor of V2k went on to patent his mind-controlling invention and then table it as a major electromagnetic mind-control project of the US government. Indeed, the invention was perfected as a psychological warfare program for the Pentagon in the 1950s. “The Radiohead Protocol” is essentially the unauthorized biography of the inventor of V2k/mind-control, who subjected millions of Targeted Individuals to a lifetime of mental slavery and unimaginable suffering after he researched on non-consenting subjects and then went on to exercise Electronic Harassment and mind-control indiscriminately on victims with devastating effects. The book then returns readers to the present, where the so-called Perpetrators currently use the very same mind-control program – created by the inventor so many decades ago – to ruthlessly torture and harass victims in their own homes and minds, as if enough wasn’t enough, already. “The Radiohead Protocol” is the most uncompromising book ever written on the subject of 21st Century V2k/mind-control, and the only honest information that stands between victims of this heinous crime against humanity and a growing number of aggressive Perpetrators who use the invention to create pandemonium in the community...

Description : THE POSSIBLE JOURNEY is about war and peace, about disharmony and harmony, about hate and love, about what we choose and by which we customize habits. In the course of life, positives and negatives get folded together in consciousness. We can blindly go on and suffer the hurts of negative implications and impose them on others, or we can search them out and remove them from the menu of choices. Nature equips us to do this. We inherit an intuitional capacity for symbiotic accommodation but also a strong inclination toward hyped egoism. One is the way of love and harmony, the other is the way of discord and degradation. It’s not about God; it’s about us and our personal choices to become Godlike—or otherwise. Natural, self-reflective evolution (symbiosis), the option of love, is ours to choose. Intentional symbiosis is the way of Godhead Harmony, the Way of WORD-LIGHT-LOVE. The alternative is the way of waste, of personal and social degradation, the trinity of ignorance-arrogance-greed. Coming to the wisdom of faith/reason by way of trimorphic resonance is an adult, divine/human process of consciousness, something larger and beyond the pablum of institutional religion. Our choice is to continue on the way of repressive Dominion Theology, imperialism and violence, or to diverge and opt the way of Liberation Theology, love for one another, openness and intentional accommodation. THE POSSIBLE JOURNEY aspires to be a lifetime guide for growth into adult faith and fulfilled living. Let it be your guide to the harmonic Way of TRUTH-LIGHT-LOVE. Uncompromised Trust, fidelity to mutuality, is the best option for developing the possibilities of life. For the Love of God and for Peace on Earth choose intentional symbiosis, choose trust, choose life!

Description : The aim of this Companion volume is to provide scholars and advanced graduate students with a comprehensive and authoritative state-of-the-art review of current research work on Anglo-Italian Renaissance studies. Written by a team of international scholars and experts in the field, the chapters are grouped into two large areas of influence and intertextuality, corresponding to the dual way in which early modern England looked upon the Italian world from the English perspective – Part 1: "Italian literature and culture" and Part 2: "Appropriations and ideologies". In the first part, prominent Italian authors, artists, and thinkers are examined as a direct source of inspiration, imitation, and divergence. The variegated English response to the cultural, ideological, and political implications of pervasive Italian intertextuality, in interrelated aspects of artistic and generic production, is dealt with in the second part. Constructed on the basis of a largely interdisciplinary approach, the volume offers an in-depth and wide-ranging treatment of the multifaceted ways in which Italy’s material world and its iconologies are represented, appropriated, and exploited in the literary and cultural domain of early modern England. For this reason, contributors were asked to write essays that not only reflect current thinking but also point to directions for future research and scholarship, while a purposefully conceived bibliography of primary and secondary sources and a detailed index round off the volume.

Description : At first, Mark Prothero, Defense Attorney for GaryRidgway, thought: "This can't be the Green River Killer! He'stoo ordinary! He's too small. He's too calm. He's too polite! Hecan't possibly have murdered forty-nine women. They can't beserious! They must have screwed up! I didn't realize then, but Iwas right. Gary Ridgway hadn't killed forty-nine women. He'd killed even more than that." Soon, Mark Prothero faced the question: "How could you possiblydefend the most prolific serial killer in United Stateshistory, the infamous Green River Killer? If anyone deservedto be executed for his crimes, didn't he?" Mark Prothero, co-lead defense attorney who helped save GaryRidgway from the death sentence, has heard that question manytimes. Now he’s written a book that reveals the true, insidestory of exactly how an idealistic public defender, high schoolswim coach, husband, and dad could bring himself to spend manymonths of close confinement with a man who brutally murdered atleast 75 young women, often in the act of sex. DefendingGary shows how Prothero could reconcile these monstrous actsknowing the reality of this unassuming fellow Gary Ridgway, amild-mannered, church-going, devoted husband, father, and formerNavy man, with an IQ of around 82 and a longtime job as a truckpainter from Auburn, Washington, near Seattle.

Description : More than 400 films and 150 television series have featured time travel—stories of rewriting history, lovers separated by centuries, journeys to the past or the (often dystopian) future. This book examines some of the roles time travel plays on screen in science fiction and fantasy. Plot synopses and credits are listed for films and TV series from England, Canada, the UK and Japan, as well as for TV and films from elsewhere in the world. Tropes and plot elements are highlighted. The author discusses philosophical questions about time travel, such as the logic of timelines, causality (what’s to keep time-travelers from jumping back and correcting every mistake?) and morality (if you correct a mistake, are you still guilty of it?).

Description : Whether referring to a place, a nonhuman animal or plant, or a state of mind, wild indicates autonomy and agency, a will to be, a unique expression of life. Yet two contrasting ideas about wild nature permeate contemporary discussions: either that nature is most wild in the absence of a defiling human presence, or that nature is completely humanized and nothing is truly wild. This book charts a different path. Exploring how people can become attuned to the wild community of life and also contribute to the well-being of the wild places in which we live, work, and play, Wildness brings together esteemed authors from a variety of landscapes, cultures, and backgrounds to share their stories about the interdependence of everyday human lifeways and wildness. As they show, far from being an all or nothing proposition, wildness exists in variations and degrees that range from cultivated soils to multigenerational forests to sunflowers pushing through cracks in a city alley. Spanning diverse geographies, these essays celebrate the continuum of wildness, revealing the many ways in which human communities can nurture, adapt to, and thrive alongside their wild nonhuman kin. From the contoured lands of Wisconsin’s Driftless region to remote Alaska, from the amazing adaptations of animals and plants living in the concrete jungle to indigenous lands and harvest ceremonies, from backyards to reclaimed urban industrial sites, from microcosms to bioregions and atmospheres, manifestations of wildness are everywhere. With this book, we gain insight into what wildness is and could be, as well as how it might be recovered in our lives—and with it, how we might unearth a more profound, wilder understanding of what it means to be human. Wildness: Relations of People and Place is published in association with the Center for Humans and Nature, an organization that brings together some of the brightest minds to explore and promote human responsibilities to each other and the whole community of life. Visit the Center for Humans and Nature's Wildness website for upcoming events and a series of related short films.

Description : Writing in 1940, the prominent German art historian Erwin Panofsky asked, How, then, is it possible to build up art history as a respectable scholarly discipline, if its objects come into being by an irrational and subjective process?" In Chaos and Cosmos, Karen Lang addresses the power of art to resist the pressures of the transcendental vantage point-history. Uncovering the intellectual and cultural richness of the early years of academic art history in Germany—the period from the 1880s to 1940—she explores various attempts within art history to transform aesthetic phenomena—chaos—into the cosmos of a systematic, unified field of inquiry. Lang starts by examining Panofsky's approach to aesthetic phenomena in his early theoretical essays alongside Ernst Cassirer's contemporaneous publications on the substance and function of scientific concepts (and on Einstein's theory of relativity). She then turns to the subject of aesthetic judgment through a rereading of Kantian subjectivity and Kant's uneasy legacy in art history. From here, Lang considers the different organizing theories of symbolic form proposed by Aby Warburg and Cassirer, as well as Goethe's inspiration for both; Alois Riegl's notion of age value and Walter Benjamin's conceptions of the aura; concluding with an extended examination of objectivity and the figure of the art connoisseur. Extensively illustrated with works of art from the Enlightenment to the present day, this venturesome book illuminates an intellectual legacy that has profoundly shaped the study of the history of art in ways that have, until now, been largely unacknowledged. Addressing the interplay of chaos and cosmos in terms of history, art history, philosophy, and epistemology, Lang traces shifts in point of view in art history and the way these shifts change aesthetic objects into historical objects, and even objects of knowledge.

Description : Since 1970, Manitoba artist Don Proch has built an astonishing body of work evoking a semi-mythical Prairie past and an unsettled and unresolved modernity. In his complex sculptures and life-size masks, Proch combines intricate draftsmanship with natural and found materials in surprising and transformative ways. Proch grew up in the farmland of north-central Manitoba. Using the rolling hills and unique parkland vistas of the Asessippi valley he creates a complex personal iconography based on prairie life, landscape, geology and history. The result is what art critic Robert Enright called “inexplicable as a miracle.” Proch first came to the Canadian art world’s attention as part of a group of radical young artists in the 1970s, intent on shaking up the art establishment. His complex installations, masks, and silkscreen prints quickly established his reputation as an innovator with a unique vision. Today he is recognized as one of the most influential visual artists to come out of western Canada, and his work can be found in major public and corporate collections including Canada’s major art galleries. Richly illustrated with more than 80 plates, the book includes rare excerpts from Proch’s notebooks that reveal his intricate working process. Surveying the course of Proch’s career, curator and art historian Patricia Bovey discusses the themes and influences behind his work and their context within the history of Canadian art.
