Description : Banking in Scotland has a long and distinguished history - to this day Scotland is served by its own banks which form a distinct regional group within the wider British banking system. Yet, until this volume, there had been no book which gives a full account of modern Scottish banking, analyzing its position within the British banking structure. With this comprehensive study, this gap in the literature of modern British financial institutions has now been filled. Here, all aspects of Scottish banking are covered. The author describes the structure of the system and the pattern of branch banking, examining the position and practices of Scottish banks in regard to deposits and asset holding. He sets out the modern position of Scottish bank note issues and analyzes their significance both for the banks themselves and for the British system as a whole. The book gives valuable appraisal of the performance of the Scottish banks as lenders to the private business sector. The author is not concerned with Scottish banks simply as institutions domestic to Scotland. He traces their relationship with the City of London and fully analyzes their role within the operations of wider British Monetary policy. This fascinating study, first published in 1965, concludes with a consideration of the future prospects of the Scottish banks within British banking as a whole.

Description : This title provides a comprehensive treatment of banking law and practice. It traces the development of banking in Scotland from the foundation of the Bank of Scotland in 1695 to the establishment of the Banking Ombudsman Scheme in the 1980s, the promulgation of the Good Banking Code in the 1990s and modern methods of money transmission. The emphasis throughout is practical, with copious reference to both primary and secondary sources and in-depth consideration of the specialities of the Scottish banking system.

Description : From 1716 to 1845 Scottish banks were among the most dynamic and resilient in Europe, effectively absorbing economic shocks that rocked markets in London and on the continent. Tyler Beck Goodspeed explains the paradox that Scotland’s banking system achieved this success without the regulations Adam Smith considered necessary for economic stability.

Description : This book is based on ethnographic research from 2001-2, during Bank of Scotland's first year of merger with Halifax to form HBOS. The research is revisited from the present perspective in the wake of the global banking and financial crisis that undermined HBOS in 2008. This historical perspective on the ethnographic data is used to explore: people's responses to the pressures of heightened competition and organisational change; mutual and sometimes antagonistic perceptions of Scottish and English identities across the two merged banks; conflicting evaluations of national and organisational cultures; and the challenges of integrating ethnographic and historical perspectives in a single study. As an historical ethnography it 'salvages' a disappearing culture of Scottish and UK banking, disintegrated by neoliberal processes.

Description : The second Scotland analysis paper, Currency and monetary policy, explained that the currency and macroeconomic framework that operates across the UK would not be able to continue between two separate states. In the event of a vote for independence, there would be further consequences for the financial sector and for its customers which are analysed in the current paper. The most profound implication is that independence would create two separate financial jurisdictions: the continuing UK and a new, independent Scotland, which would require its own legal and regulatory framework. The competitiveness of Scotland's financial sector is aided by its location within the UK. Industry and international bodies view the UK as a strong tax and regulatory regime, building customers' and partner organisations' trust in UK financial firms. Being part of the UK helps support the Scottish financial services sector, which generates employment not just in financial services firms, but in the professional and other services that support the sector. Location in a larger economy also helps to reduce firms' cost of borrowing because markets perceive these firms as less of a risk. If Scotland became independent, this position would be called into question: The Scottish banking sector would be exceptionally large compared to the size of an independent Scotland's economy, making it more vulnerable to financial shocks than it is as part of the larger UK. There could be questions about an independent Scotland's ability to stabilise its banking system in the event of a future financial crisis

Description : This report examines the impact on Scotland of the current economic crisis, specifically the recapitalisation of two of its largest banks: Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and the newly merged Lloyds TSB and Halifax Bank of Scotland. Evidence suggests that customers are not being fairly treated by the very banks being supported by taxpayers' money to the tune of hundreds of billions of pounds. The Committee is disappointed that both banks and the Minister consider it a necessary evil to reward to certain bank executives with enormous bonuses when thousands of rank and file employees face redundancy. They are not convinced that there has been a change of culture within banks as a result of the crisis and are concerned that front-line staff are still being pressured to sell potentially unsuitable products such as loans and credit cards to customers at pre-crisis levels. Furthermore, small and medium sized businesses vital to the Scottish economy have experienced extreme difficulties in the past eighteen months in accessing the finance necessary to keep themselves afloat. This inquiry specifically covered the effect of the banking crisis on jobs, services to the public and small business lending in Scotland; the effect of the failure of Scottish banks and building societies on the international reputation of Scotland's banking sector and the effectiveness of measures put in place by the UK Government
