Description : Instrumental techniques of analysis have now moved from the confines of the chemistry laboratory to form an indispensable part of the analytical armoury of many workers involved in the biological sciences. It is now quite out of the question to considcr a laboratory dealing with the analysis of biological materials that is not equipped with an extensive range of instrumentation. Recent years have also seen a dramatic improvement in the ease with which such instruments can be used, and the quality and quantity of the analytical data that they can produce. This is due in no sm all part to the ubiquitous use of microprocessors and computers for instrumental control. However, under these circumstances there is areal danger of the analyst adopting a 'black box' mentality and not treating the analytical data produced in accordance with the limitations that may be inherent in the method used. Such a problem can only be overcome if the operator is fully aware of both the theoretical and instrumental constraints relevant to the technique in question. As the complexity and sheer volume of material in undergraduate courses increases, there is a tendency to reduce the amount of fundamental material that is taught prior to embarking on the more applied aspects. This is nowhere more apparent than in the teaching of instrumental techniques of analysis.

Molecular Omic’s is now a major driving force to learn the adaption genetics and a great challenge to the scientific community, which can be resolved through the application of the NGS technologies. The availability of complete genome sequences, the respective model species for dicot and monocot plant groups, presents a global opportunity to delineate the identification, function and the expression of the genes, to develop new tools for the identification of the new genes and pathway identification. Genome-wide research tools, resources and approaches such as data mining for structural similarities, gene expression profiling at the DNA and RNA level with rapid increase in available genome sequencing efforts, expressed sequence tags (ESTs), RNA-seq, gene expression profiling, induced deletion mutants and insertional mutants, and gene expression knock-down (gene silencing) studies with RNAi and microRNAs have become integral parts of plant molecular omic’s. Molecular diversity and mutational approaches present the first line of approach to unravel the genetic and molecular basis for several traits, QTL related to disease resistance, which includes host approaches to combat the pathogens and to understand the adaptation of the pathogen to the plant host. Using NGS technologies, understanding of adaptation genetics towards stress tolerance has been correlated to the epigenetics. Naturally occurring allelic variations, genome shuffling and variations induced by chemical or radiation mutagenesis are also being used in functional genomics to elucidate the pathway for the pathogen and stress tolerance and is widely illustrated in demonstrating the identification of the genes responsible for tolerance in plants, bacterial and fungal species.

Description : In July 2005, the National Academies released the report Biological Science and Biotechnology in Russia: Controlling Diseases and Enhancing Security. The report offered a number of recommendations that could help restore Russia’s ability to join with the United States and the broader international community in leading an expanded global effort to control infectious diseases. A proposed bilateral intergovernmental commission could play a pivotal role toward that end as cooperation moves from assistance to partnership. The report proposed the establishment of two model State Sanitary Epidemiological Surveillance Centers in Russia, more focused support of competitively selected Russian research groups as centers of excellence, the promotion of investments in biotechnology niches that are well suited for Russian companies, and expanded opportunities for young scientists to achieve scientific leadership positions in Russia. Also, the report highlighted the importance of U.S. programs that support the integration of former Soviet defense scientists with civilian researchers who had not been involved in military-related activities.
