The reality of war is bittersweet. With war come both the bitter memories of the pain that conflict causes and the sweet rewards that having courage and respect for your country can bestow. Without courage and faith, no rewards are forthcoming. In Bitter Sweet, author Barbara A. Tyler recounts the war experiences of two black veterans who served during World War II and the Korean War. Part memoir, part military history, Bitter Sweet details the military careers of John J. Pickney and Woodrow Duhon who both joined the military in 1944—Pickney the United States Navy and Duhon the Marine Corps. Though the two men never served together, they became friends and bonded through their experiences as black men serving in the military. This story details their careers, including Duhon’s brush with death and receipt of two Purple Hearts. Featuring many photos, these stories illustrate the realities of war and show the fight, bravery, and endurance it takes to survive service during times of conflict.

J. G. Holland's prevailing "Bitter Sweet" (1858), a poetic "play" infused with the beauties of Christianity, is a masterpiece. It reads in an elegant and surreal way, as if breathing life itself. It is a dramatic story experience published in book format. This lost and forgotten book has been rewritten in respects to the original author, J. G. Holland, in keeping the exact wording, spelling, punctuation, and format of the original source. Therefore, it is completely unabridged. The original photograph of the author and the art page of the original publisher has been carefully photographed and re-inserted into this book. Also, you will find an informational section about J. G. Holland, which gives this formerly well-known, creative genius the richly deserved justice he, and his work, have long-since earned.

This is an attempt to briefly record my long life story as a Guyanese who evolved from a broken parental home and the pits of poverty in colonial British Guiana to become, first a successful school teacher and an unconventional school administrator. I then won a coveted Cadetship offered by the expatriate firm of Bookers Sugar Estates Ltd., which owned and operated the sugar industry in the colony. This was the catalyst that provided the springboard for my launching into the field of Human Resource Management initially in the sugar industry in Guyana, then in Canada, followed by exciting assignments literally across the world with the United Nations Children Fund, a field based agency of the United Nations, before ending with a return to base in Guyana.
