Description : The history of money and its violent and oppressive origins from slavery to war—by the author of Global Slump. In most accounts of the origins of money we are offered pleasant tales in which it arises to the mutual benefit of all parties as a result of barter. But in this groundbreaking study, David McNally reveals the true story of money’s origins and development as one of violence and human bondage. Money’s emergence and its transformation are shown to be intimately connected to the buying and selling of slaves and the waging of war. Blood and Money demonstrates the ways that money has “internalized” its violent origins, making clear that it has become a concentrated force of social power and domination. Where Adam Smith observed that monetary wealth represents “command over labor,” this paradigm shifting book amends his view to define money as comprising the command over persons and their bodies. “This fascinating and informative study, rich in novel insights, treats money not as an abstraction from its social base but as deeply embedded in its essential functions and origins in brutal violence and harsh oppression.” —Noam Chomsky “A fine-grained historical analysis of the interconnection between war, enslavement, finance, and money from classical times to present.” —Jeff Noonan, author of The Troubles of Democracy “McNally casts an unsparing light on the origins of money—and capitalism itself—in this scathing, Marxist-informed account . . . . McNally builds a powerful, richly documented argument that unchecked capitalism prioritizes greed and violence over compassion . . . . [T]his searing academic treatise makes a convincing case.” —Publishers Weekly

Joan Robinson Hill was a world-class equestrian, a glamorous member of Houston high society, and the wife of Dr. John Hill, a handsome and successful plastic surgeon. Her father, Ash Robinson, was a charismatic oil tycoon obsessed with making his daughter’s every dream come true. The sordid events that followed comprise “what may be the most compelling and complex case in crime annals” (Ann Rule, bestselling author of The Stranger Beside Me). From the elegant mansions of River Oaks, one of America’s most exclusive neighborhoods, to a seedy underworld of prostitution and murder-for-hire, New York Times–bestselling author Thomas Thompson tracks down every bizarre motive and enigmatic clue to weave a fascinating tale of lust and vengeance. Description : Power, passion, oil money, murder—all the ingredients of a fast-paced, gripping mystery novel drive this true-crime story that on its original publication leapt onto best-seller lists nationwide. To that mix, add glamorous personalities, prominent Texas businessmen, gangland reprobates, and a whole parade of medical experts. At once a documentary account of events and a novelistic reconstruction of encounters among the cast of colorful characters, this anatomy of murder first chronicles the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death in 1969 of Joan Robinson—the pampered daughter of a Texas oil millionaire and the wife of plastic surgeon Dr. John Hill—then examines the bizarre consequences that followed it. For in 1972, having been charged by his father-in-law with Joan's death and having survived a mistrial, John Hill himself was killed, supposedly by a robber. So was the robber, by a cop, supposedly for resisting arrest. From the exclusive haunts of Houston's super-rich to the city's seamy underworld of prostitutes, pimps, and punks, author and investigative journalist Thomas Thompson tracks down all the leads and clues. And in a brutal tale of blood and money he uncovers some shocking and bitter truths.

Description : The story is set mainly in and around Boston, with some action taking place in Brighton Beach, Coney Island. A female torso is discovered buried on Middlesex Fells. A sergeant at the local county precinct knows there are wider implications and asks the Boston Police Department for assistance. The case is passed to Sergeant Investigator Lynden Deller and his detective team, Hilly Marsden and Glynn Taylor. Deller's friend is the Deputy Coroner, Mason Bridger, and he carries out the autopsy. His preliminary report tells Deller that the torso may at one time have been a gynandromorph and had been surgically corrected'. Both men assume the amputations were carried out to hide the identity of the woman but the killer, or killers, has made a mistake. The woman has had a breast augmentation at some point in her past and the implants carry serial numbers. Lynden Deller is an unusual man. His ancestors, from Boston, England, were among the first settlers in Massachusetts. He hails from a very wealthy, Brahmin background and his brother, Charles, runs the family's multi-million dollar financial corporation. Deller and his sister Nell are totally different in character to their older brother in that they have turned their back on the wealth and dedicated themselves to assisting in the public good. Nell is an immunologist and bacteriologist and devotes most of her time abroad among the afflicted of the Third World. Their mother, Andrea, is a social butterfly who judges no-one harshly and loves her children equally. She runs charity events and donates her time to raising money and giving a good deal of her own. Her husband, Deller's father, died of a stroke in his early fifties. Miller Killaine is a billionaire but is descended from poor Irish immigrant stock. The Killaine Corporation, the legal one, own all types of businesses across America and beyond. He also heads a secretive, shell corporation whose illegal activities have been in operation for more than a century. He hates the Brahmin stock. His son, Emmet, is a different individual, having been moulded by his gentle mother. Emmet was engaged to the girl, Charlotte Alverdia, in Mason Bridger's refrigerated drawer. He does not know straight away that his father had the girl killed after she told Emmet her most guarded secret and he broke their engagement. When she left she took with her a family heirloom, an engagement ring valued at almost $2,000,000, and some papers that tell of a secret only Miller Killaine and one other person know. He will remove anyone to keep that secret. Problems arise when the ring and papers are not returned by Charlotte's killers and they demand a ransom for the jewellery and the papers. Killaine has to hire more thorough men to hunt down those who dared to doublecross him. From there the hunt for Killaine's possessions becomes more convoluted as the months pass. There are others involved, such as a gang of Romani Bulgarians and a man by the name of Russian Peter, who are on Killaine's payroll. These men are all dangerous but none is more dangerous than Killaine's most trusted contract operator. He was originally Polish and his real name was Zadufin. (FIN to those who can afford to pay for his services.) When he escaped Poland, he took his dead brother's name as a mark of respect and love. Before he left, and after his father was the cause of his brother's death, he cut the old man's throat and made Polish black sausage with the blood and spices; just the way his father had shown him. He has made the sausage many times since; in Denmark, Canada and America. He lives on a bluff on Martha's Vineyard in a house that looks across Nantucket Sound. He is the only man that Miller Killaine fears. Emmet meets Nell at a fund raiser run by his father at Garavogue, the family mansion. The Deller family are guests along with 300 other wealthy donors. Emmet and Nell eventually fall for one another but Nell is

Description : Authentic Fakes explores the religious dimensions of American popular culture in unexpected places: baseball, the Human Genome Project, Coca-Cola, rock 'n' roll, the rhetoric of Ronald Reagan, the charisma of Jim Jones, Tupperware, and the free market, to name a few. Chidester travels through the cultural landscape and discovers the role that fakery—in the guise of frauds, charlatans, inventions, and simulations—plays in creating religious experience. His book is at once an incisive analysis of the relationship between religion and popular culture and a celebration of the myriad ways in which invention can stimulate the religious imagination. Moving beyond American borders, Chidester considers the religion of McDonald’s and Disney, the discourse of W.E.B. Du Bois and the American movement in Southern Africa, the messianic promise of Nelson Mandela’s 1990 tour to America, and more. He also looks at the creative possibilities of the Internet in such phenomena as Discordianism, the Holy Order of the Cheeseburger, and a range of similar inventions. Arguing throughout that religious fakes can do authentic religious work, and that American popular culture is the space of that creative labor, Chidester looks toward a future "pregnant with the possibilities of new kinds of authenticity."

They killed my mother and sister, leaving me and my twin brother fighting for our lives. My father was supposed to be there that night. He should have been there. Should have protected them-us. When you strip a man of all he cares about, you're left with a soulless entity seething with primal rage. He promised to turn Gallo's bloodline to dust to get his retribution. And he did. All but one. Freya I was seven years old when I was taken in the night. I don't remember much of life before that. All I know now is the glaring eyes of a boy who hates me, and the comfort I find in the boy whose face mirrors his. I'm not part of this family, but they're all I have familiar as one. To hate is easy. And I do hate them. But to love even in hate is what hardens you, strengthens you, gives you reason. The truth is I shouldn't love them, that all these years are leading somewhere I won't want to go. But I do... Love them. I love them both. The only question left now is, do they love me?

Description : The working paper is divided into two main parts. The first part is a descriptive analysis of the illicit use of biological agents by criminals and terrorists. It draws on a series of case studies documented in the second part. The case studies describe every instance identifiable in open source materials in which a perpetrator used, acquired, or threatened to use a biological agent. While the inventory of cases is clearly incomplete, it provides an empirical basis for addressing a number of important questions relating to both biocrimes and bioterrorism. This material should enable policymakers concerned with bioterrorism to make more informed decisions. In the course of this project, the author has researched over 270 alleged cases involving biological agents. This includes all incidents found in open sources that allegedly occurred during the 20th Century. While the list is certainly not complete, it provides the most comprehensive existing unclassified coverage of instances of illicit use of biological agents.

How did we end up with a $16 trillion national debt that paralyzes all initiatives, makes us a laughingstock instead of a world leader, and stands to enslave our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with horrendous debts? What can we do to diffuse what US Senator Tom Colburn calls "The Debt-Bomb"? Is there a constitutional, holistic, and efficient way out of this mess? Answers can be found in this book.
