Description : Since it was first published in 1982 British Archives has established itself as the premier reference work to holdings of archives and manuscript collections throughout the UK. The 3rd edition has been extensively revised and enlarged with more than 150 new entries, further widening the range of the book. Entries are structured to show the archives of the organisation as distinct from deposited collections and significant non-manuscript material, and additional details of fax number and conservation provision are included for the first time. All the existing entries have been significantly updated, together with the select bibliography and list of useful addresses of various organisations involved in the care and custody of archives. The introduction provides an invaluable guide to researchers using archives, including a summary of the relevant legislation and a detailed description of the usual holdings of county and other local authority record offices.

Description : This practical guide provides an overview of how to use archives in Britain for students and researchers. The internet has transformed access to and the nature of archival sources: catalogues and research guides have been placed online and many records have been digitized, whilst digital records themselves such as emails, databases and websites are being archived and made accessible to researchers. This new landscape has brought increased access but also increased complexity, combined with the enormous expectations of the ‘Google generation’ about what information is accessible online and what is not. Online guides that exist are often very detailed and generally focus on the holdings of the specific archives that have created them. No general overview exists and in most cases even the most basic awareness that particular websites or online catalogues exist is lacking. The Researcher’s Guide to Using British Archives fills that gap. The book is easy-to-read and easy-to-navigate and contains practical and real-life examples combined with short key-point summaries at the end of each chapter.

Description : Excerpt from Extracts From British Archives on the Families of Halley, Hawley, Pyke, Etc It will be noted that, under the caption Lichfield, the surname Halley occurs several times between the years 1532 and 1594, but, under the same heading, the name Hawley does not appear until 1596, although after that date the two surnames are used interchangeably in a given family. This lends color to the belief that the families of Halley and Hawley in Derbyshire and Northamptonshire were of identical origin. The coat armorial (sable, a fret and a canton argent ascribed by John Aubrey to Dr. Edmond Halley, is by Papworth assigned also to Hales, Hauley, co. Devon; Hawleys with_ authorities as follows. Description : The archives are generally sites where historians conduct research into our past. Seldom are they objects of research. Sabyasachi Bhattacharya traces the path that led to the creation of a central archive in India, from the setting up of the Imperial Record Department, the precursor of the National Archives of India, and the Indian Historical Records Commission, to the framing of archival policies and the change in those policies over the years. In the last two decades of colonial rule in India, there were anticipations of freedom in many areas of the public sphere. These were felt in the domain of archiving as well, chiefly in the form of reversal of earlier policies. From this perspective, Bhattacharya explores the relation between knowledge and power and discusses how the World Wars and the decline of Britain, among other factors, effected a transition from a Eurocentric and disparaging approach to India towards a more liberal and less ethnocentric one.

Description : What do seat belts, life jackets and anti-jack knife technology have in common? They were all the subjects of campaigns run by the British Safety Council since its inception in 1957. James Tye, its charismatic founder and leader for nearly 40 years, created the British Safety Council to bring about a transformation in how Great Britain viewed safety and health. In 1957, hundreds, if not thousands, of workers were killed in accidents and James marshalled every conceivable technique to save lives, including PR stunts, training, lobbying for better laws and, crucially, what he called ‘propaganda’, in the form of posters and other communication tools. In 2014, a long-lost collection of posters, papers and letters were found gathering dust in a warehouse. The British Safety Council, wanting to mark its 60-year history and its role in reducing deaths at work, decided to preserve the collection and commissioned historian Mike Esbester to trace the history of health and safety in Britain from the late 1960s through the posters and photographs of the time. Transformative Propaganda: Opening the Archives of the British Safety Council offers a fascinating and vivid insight into the social and political realities of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s through a wealth of historical documents, press cuttings, correspondence, photographs and posters. It offers a truly extraordinary window onto the evolution of health and safety within the UK and richly deserves a place on the bookshelf of every safety professional.
