Description : In the aftermath of the 60s “Black is Beautiful” movement and publication of The Color Complex almost thirty years later the issue of skin color has mushroomed onto the world stage of social science. Such visibility has inspired publication of the Melanin Millennium for insuring that the discourse on skin color meet the highest standards of accuracy and objective investigation. This volume addresses the issue of skin color in a worldwide context. A virtual visit to countries that have witnessed a huge rise in the use of skin whitening products and facial feature surgeries aiming for a more Caucasian-like appearance will be taken into account. The book also addresses the question of whether using the laws has helped to redress injustices of skin color discrimination, or only further promoted recognition of its divisiveness among people of color and Whites. The Melanin Millennium has to do with now and the future. In the 20th century science including eugenics was given to and dominated by discussions of race category. Heretofore there remain social scientists and other relative to the issue of skin color loyal to race discourse. However in their interpretation and analysis of social phenomena the world has moved on. Thus while race dominated the 20th century the 21st century will emerge as a global community dominated by skin color and making it the melanin millennium.

Description : Globally, podiatric medicine has evolved significantly in both its depth and scope of practice. Continual innovation and a dynamic response to the call for evidence-based practice have led to a rapid revolution in podiatric education, research and practice. Podiatry plays a pivotal role in the early assessment, diagnosis and management of lower limb pathologies as well as in the detection and monitoring of long-term conditions. The time dedicated to podiatric consultation provides an opportunity for dialogue and interaction which places the profession at the heart of public health education. Having a unique role in patient care, podiatrists gain a particular insight into the holistic lives of their patients, and are therefore highly valued members of the extended multidisciplinary team in both primary and secondary care. Podiatric medicine is based on the cognitive and applied understanding of anatomy, physiology, biomedical, psychosocial and physical sciences. Consequently, podiatrists are now able to offer care encompassing a diverse range of diagnostic skills and management strategies. Since comorbidities, polypharmacy and ambulatory wellbeing issues present across all ages, podiatrists need to maintain the health of increasing numbers of patients who present with complex medical conditions. All these professional developments have led to a need for specialist textbooks reflecting the enhanced role of podiatrists in the wider context of health and wellbeing. This landmark publication offers a single source of reference for the structural and functional capacity of all major body systems. It also provides an insight into the social complexities of working with patients, their families and carers in everyday clinical practice. In adopting this holistic approach to patient care, this text is the first in the discipline to integrate sociological perspectives, public health education and the complexities of mental illness with traditional chapters on human anatomy and physiology. Edited and authored by an international team of experts on podiatric medicine, science and health, and utilising the latest research, this comprehensive textbook is destined to become a seminal text for the next generation of podiatrists, both as students and as healthcare professionals.

Description : The best-selling text has been completely revised and revitalised in this fifth edition, with the authors once again encouraging general practitioners, medical students, general physicians and early stage dermatology specialist trainees and interns to relish the unique challenge of diagnosing and treating skin conditions. Clinical Dermatology, 5th edition contains over 400 high quality pictures and diagrams combined with colourful phrases to illustrate and entertain as it teaches. The book has established a reputation as a ‘way of learning’ and as an accessible guide to the subject for the aspiring specialist. Readers are guided through the maze that too often lies between the presenting skin complaint and its final diagnosis and treatment. The authors have skilfully crafted an easily read text with enough detail to clarify the subject, but not enough to obscure it. This fifth edition contains new chapters on non-invasive physical treatment and dermoscopy, and new material on cosmetic dermatology, surgical dermatology, the skin and the psyche, and dermatoses of non-Caucasian skin. The text throughout the book has been updated in line with developments in the science and practice of dermatology. “... brilliantly succeeds in enticing you to look further. The writing is clear, and the joint British-American authorship avoids any parochial views.” From a review of a previous edition in BMJ “...a very well-presented book...an excellent aid for teaching. I recommend this book highly to individuals and departments.” From a review of a previous edition in J Derm Treatment “… provides a good overview of the structure and function of the skin as well as a good foundation for learning dermatology…well organized and includes a chapter dedicated to skin signs of systemic disease which is not covered in the other dermatology primers.” From a review of a previous edition in JAMA

Description : The Psychoanalytic Theory of Neurosis, Fenichel's classic text, summarized the first half century of psychoanalytic investigation into psychopathology and presented a general psychoanalytic theory of neurosis. When Otto Fenichel died, Anna Freud mourned the loss of 'his inexhaustible knowledge of psychoanalysis and his inimitable way of organizing and presenting his facts'. These qualities shine through The Psychoanalytic Theory of Neurosis which has been a standard reference for generations of psychoanalysts. For this anniversary edition, Leo Rangell has written an introduction that sets Fenichel's work in context. He sees Fenichel as a worthy heir to Freud; both men influenced their followers by what Rangell calls 'the charisma of ideas'. In his epilogue, Rangell describes the fate of Fenichel's ideas and of this book as 'a barometer of the place of psychoanalysis ... within the external intellectual world and, even more significantly, of the trends and shifting winds of opinion within the psychoanalytic field itself'. He traces those trends through the turbulent controversies of the field, concluding that Fenichel's observations are as fresh and relevant today as they were fifty years ago.
