Beginner s Guide to Starting Your Own Model Train Collection Scenery Track Plans and Layouts Book Excerpt:

ABOUT THE BOOK Model railroading is an activity that captivates people of all ages and genders. There is something endlessly fascinating about trains, and miniature trains are the most fascinating of all. It's a great pastime that provides a creative outlet, a lot of enjoyment, and the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. Model railroading is a very adult pastime that makes you feel like a kid again. Best of all, it's a hobby that you can enjoy as a family, parents and children together. It really is the world's greatest hobby. Many are attracted to model railroading but don't know where to begin. You may have seen the impressive layouts created by model railroad enthusiasts and worry that you don't have sufficient space or resources to create something similar. Having sufficient know-how to assemble track, build scenes, or keep electronic components in good working order may also seem like a deterrent. Cost can also be a factor. However, you don't have to be an expert to build your first model railway. Model railroading has a very large support community. It's easy to find an answer to virtually any question you may have about building and maintaining a model train collection, both in person and on the Internet. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Scale refers to the relationship between model trains and the real thing. O scale used to be called 1:48, with HO scale at 1:87, but measurements have changed somewhat. For the novice, it's best to not get too mired in scale details. Suffice it to say that O scale is the largest model train, and is not very common as it requires more space than most people can allot. HO scale is the most prevalent and the standard for most model railroaders, having the most product selection availability. N is smaller than HO, and although there is a good selection, many hobbyists prefer HO since N requires a higher degree of detail and ability to work with miniature parts. Much depends on individual preference. If you just want miles and miles of track and lots of trains going around, N is great. If you want to re-create an elaborate scene with buildings, people, and geographical features, HO is better. If you get into model railroad building in a big way, you may eventually want to explore other scales, but most model train hobbyists are happiest with HO or N... Buy a copy to keep reading!

The Wonderful World of Model Trains Book Excerpt:

There's a nostalgia associated with model trains and railroading -- even if it's unspoken. Railroads take us back to an earlier era. A more basic time. You've no doubt recognized the camaraderie and the passion these folks have. And yes, you're interested in becoming a part of that. "The Wonderful World of Model Trains" will help you do just that! It's a comprehensive guide to model railroading written for someone who is new to this hobby, starting with some basic "train knowledge" & terminologies, and continuing on to the more detailed aspects of the hobby. Having Fun With Model Trains Book Excerpt:

Model trains must be one of the oldest and most awe inspiring hobbies for both young and old. These miniature trains have captured the imagination of people all over the world for many years. Many model train builders spend hours of their time and do not spare any expense on pursuing this hobby. It becomes all engrossing and affords many happy hours to the hobbyist. There are so many models of trains coming from so many different eras that you can never run out of ideas for new projects. When one project is done usually the idea for the next project is already in place! I have seen the faces of children where these model trains have been exhibited. They are a joy to behold. They do not delight children alone but people of all ages. Many model train builders have made friends all over the world because of this hobby. These hobbyists are always looking for contacts where they can exchange information. There is a lot of information around which makes it more interesting and of course more of a challenge. There seems to be enough suppliers around where you can obtain starter kits and various parts you require. The real challenge is of course when parts have to be made by you or sourced from some supplier far from your home town. Once the love for model trains has bitten you, you will never look back and very few people that started this hobby will stop without any good reason. They will probably carry on right into old age! I hope that you will thoroughly enjoy the information that I have taken great pleasure in putting together for you.

How to Build a Model Railway Book Excerpt:

Moving from a train set out of a box to making your own model railway can seem a daunting proposition. Whether you go your own way, wish to follow a prototype tightly or have an inherited stock that you want to make the best of. This book covers the act of deciding on a design that will keep the interest alive. Executing it in a manner that is within your skills set, and finishing it to a quality you are satisfied by within a time and financial limit. Here learning from those who have had both successes and the occasional false start will assist you in execution of your project and maintaining its interest. The book aims to explain jargon and includes such subjects as project design and planning, alternative baseboard construction methods, track laying, basic electrics accompanied by a rich and varied imagery. The Market Deeping Model railway club rose to public notice in May 2019 following the sad overnight vandalism of their annual railway show. The breaking news story became a worldwide cause célèbre bringing a whirlwind of kind support from modelers and the general public. The rebuilding of the club's damaged layouts and new projects for replacements gave the rare opportunity of experienced modelers to photograph and document the build process and revisit the basics. The results are incorporated into this book making a positive and cathartic activity from a distinctly negative situation.
