Description : Excerpt from Catalogue of the Lenox Library, Vol. 2: July, 1887 In the latter part of the last century a Library was established in Lenox for the use of the shareholders, embracing a large num ber of the families in the town, and though small compared with the present Library, it contained a choice selection of standard works. In after years, two other organizations were formed, all of them for the benefit of the proprietors and their families, the present Library being the first which extended its benefits to all the inhabitants of the Town. This Library owes its existence chiefly to the disinterested and laborious efforts of Mr. J ohn Hotchkin, the long time Principal of the Lenox Academy, by whose energetic public spirit the town largely profited during all the time of his residence here. After the passage by the Legislature of the Commonwealth of a statute authorizing towns to appropriate money for the maintenance of Public Libraries, this town was induced to appropriate the sum of for this purpose, on condition that a like sum was raised by private subscription; and this additional sum was raised, through the personal efforts of Mr. Hotchkin. The six hundred dollars so obtained was expended in the purchase of books and, cases, and the Library went into operation in J annary, 1855, in a 'small room in the Town Hall. The insufficiency and insecurity of this place of deposit early became apparent to parties interested, and in the year 1856, a Library Association was formed, under whose auspices, Mr. Hotchkin being the efficient working member of the Association, a Library building was erected and furnished. Description : Excerpt from Contributions to a Catalogue of the Lenox Library, Vol. 1: Voyages of Hulsius, Etc Another copy, which may be called the 2d issue, 4 is 34-chap. 16 rs passed over. Chap. 29 is 31. The sig. K has been reprinted, and carries on the text in order. 15 Maps and Plates as above There seems to be a slight difference in the type of Sig. K. Perhaps after some copies were sent out, the mistake was discovered, and the signature can celled and reprinted. Yet it is uncertain which issue is the earlier, for the incorrect sig. K is sometimes found in sets of the v0 ages with the later editions of the other parts - ah more recently it was included in a set of 6 parts issued in 1633 hereafter described It ma): therefore be the later issue of the 3d edition. There rs no 4th Ed. Of Part 2. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
