Description : Booker T. Washington has been regarded as the leading figure in African American life, and as the man who brought his people from slavery to unfettered economic, political, and social involvement in the American mainstream. He has also been strongly criticized for advancing the cause of racial accommodation when the political agenda dictated the development of an independent black standpoint in all areas of the industrial structure. This agenda went far beyond educational reform and agrarian participation. Character Building first appeared in 1902. While enormous changes have occurred in all phases of African American rights and responsibilities, Booker T. Washington’s broad outlines on building moral character have remained intact. Washington’s book can be viewed as a Dale Carnegie volume on How to Win Friends and Influence People—black and white—as noted by the very title of the chapters: "Helping Others," "Influencing by Example," "Education that Educates," "The Gospel of Service," etc. For those in search of the ideological roots of black life in post-slavery times, this text will be a reminder of where the American nation has come from and, arguably, where it is going.

Description : This guide to interpreting the characters in Luke-Acts, the longest and most complex of New Testament narratives, uses the latest literary-critical theory and biblical scholarship to construct an understanding of how the characters are formed and how they function in the Lukan writings. It is the author’s contention that the reader plays an important role in character building. The author illustrates this process using three representative characters or character groups: John the Baptist, the Pharisees, and Herod the Tetrarch.

Description : I am 39 years old now and I began writing this book in 2008. I have an honor’s degree in Childhood and Youth Studies from Exeter University and over ten years’ experience working with young people in schools and within the care system in the UK. My story is about my life growing up in the care system and then trying to build a good life for myself. I hope it might help young people living a similar situation to remain hopeful for their futures. I hope that adults working with young people will find my book insightful and hopefully it will guide them in their working practice as well as change the way they view the young people they work with and their families. I have been very lucky in that I have gone on to do some good things and build a loving family of my own, although I won’t pretend this was easy. Having to unlearn the things I had learned as a child and not just replicate them was hard work but worth every bit of sweat and every tear. I live in a small Somerset village in the UK with my family. I work with the Somerset Youth Offending Team and with children who have emotional and behavioral difficulties, many of whom are in or have been in residential care at some point. I have written this book for many reasons but mainly because growing up I didn’t believe that I could have a good life. I honestly thought that good things weren’t meant for the likes of me. I was wrong, and I want to give every child the chance to read about how I discovered this. I did manage to break the cycle and I believe that we can all have a good life. It just might not come knocking at your door. I want those that work with young people to believe in them, every child and young person needs to believe that life is what we make it, not what others have predicted for us.

Description : UNCONSCIOUSLY we are forming habits every moment of our lives. Some are habits of a desirable nature; some are those of a most undesirable nature. Some, though not so bad in themselves, are exceedingly bad in their cumulative effects, and cause us at times much loss, much pain and anguish, while their opposites would, on the contrary, bring as much peace and joy, as well as a continually increasing power. Do we have it within our power to determine at all times what types of habits shall take form in our lives? In other words, is habit-forming, character-building, a matter of mere chance, or have we it within our own control? We have, entirely and absolutely. "I will be what I will to be," can be said and should be said by every human soul. After this has been bravely and determinedly said, and not only said, but fully inwardly realized, something yet remains.

Description : In elementary schools across the country, teachers are expected to provide at least five minutes of character education each day. This book makes it easy to meet that requirement in a meaningful way. It includes 180 character vignettes—five for each of the 36 weeks in the school year—grouped by trait. Each features kids in real-life situations making decisions that reflect their character. Each is short enough to be read aloud; all can be used as starting points for discussion, to support an existing character education program, or as the basis for an independent program. An excellent tool for the classroom or the character-conscious home.

This 8 1/4" X 11" Diary outlines 52 ready to use family meetings to fill in and cherish. The Family Meeting Diary opens by praising each member for the positive actions he or she did the previous week. The family learns listening skills, how to solve family problems, and plan fun events together. The Family Meeting Diary ends with each member committing to a specific, positive action to "make the family better." These commitments are posted on the refrigerator as visual reminders to all family members. Jean Tracy says, "Parents have the power to do what no one else can do better. Parents can give hope to the future by building character in their children now." With less than 30 minutes per meeting per week, families produce and record a year of treasured historical meetings. This keepsake will hold what the family dealt with, which problems they solved, and what they promised to do to make the family better. Whether a single parent, a stepparent, an adoptive family, a foster parent, or a two-parent family, this Family Meeting Diary offers a powerful approach to building a strong, loving family with solid ties.

Description : Need to Breathe Life into Your Characters? You may have a great story but if your characters are flat and uninteresting your readers will find your story dull. If your lead protagonist isn't generating empathy, then no one cares what happens to them. Character Development covers every aspect of character building; from developing charismatic and believable people, to making sure they work holistically to drive the narrative forward in realistic ways. Know Your Anti-Hero from Your Antagonist In order to create compelling characters your readers will love, Marsh introduces the reader to 12-character types and explains how and when they are introduced to a story. She demonstrates the importance of instilling flaws to create a balance of human qualities that evolve throughout the novel in captivating ways. Make Unforgettable Characters Character Development is a much-needed step-by-step guide to help authors create remarkable protagonists and to decide which characters are necessary to the plot. Marsh delivers a groundbreaking 176 questions to consider while creating characters. An author need never struggle again to generate memorable heroes and villains! 10 Samples of the 176 Character-Forming Questions: When communicating, what is the pace that this person communicates with? What posture do they tend to have? What does their average day look like? Be specific. What is the most significant event that took place in your character's childhood? If your character does have a criminal record, how did they get it and where were they when the event happened? How is your character perceived by strangers? How does your character react to people who challenge them? Does your character have any psychological issues such as phobias, mental illnesses, or otherwise? What does your character value and prioritize the most? (i.e., family, religion, friends, fun, money, success, etc.) If anything is stopping your character from achieving their goals, what is it? By using some, or all of these questions an author will no longer create one-dimensional characters and will have readers gripped throughout their trials and tribulations. Inspires New Connections There will be many thought-provoking subjects for both beginner and experienced authors that will motivate a much deeper conception of characters, some of which include: How Characters are Presented & Revealed Creating Expression Let You Characters Suffer Bringing Characters to Life Use Contradictions Listen to Them Give Your Characters Plenty of Opportunity to Show Up One Click Away from Getting Amazing Results Fast!
