Sperm DNA damage is common and has been associated with reduced rates of conception, impaired embryonic development and increased risk of miscarriage. Although the exact causes of sperm DNA damage are unknown, it is clear that infertile men possess substantially higher levels of sperm DNA damage than do fertile men. Written by leading, internationally renowned clinicians and basic scientists with expertise in sperm DNA, Sperm Chromatin: Biological and Clinical Applications in Male Infertility and Assisted Reproduction provides readers with a thoughtful and comprehensive review of the biological and clinical significance of sperm DNA damage. The work covers the fundamental principles of sperm chromatin architecture and function, the proposed modes of DNA damage and repair, the tests of sperm DNA damage, the clinical aspects of DNA damage and the impact of DNA damage on reproductive outcome. Unlike any other title on the topic, Sperm Chromatin: Biological and Clinical Applications in Male Infertility and Assisted Reproduction is an invaluable addition to the literature and will serve as an indispensable resource for basic scientists with an interest in sperm biology and for urologists, gynecologists, reproductive endocrinologists, and embryologists working in the field of infertility.

This volume is the second part of the book on "Chromatin Structure and Function", which resulted from a NATO-Advanced Study Institute held at Erice during April 1978. In addition to giving an updated and detailed description of various levels of chromatin organization, i. e. octamers, nucleosomes, multimers, solenoid and higher order fibers (including the most recent, yet unpublished, findings), it focuses, in a tutorial and organic format, on the possible mechanisms controlling transcription and on the basic biological phenomena (either genetic or epigenetic) related to cell aging, cell cycle, differentiation, transformation and chemical carcinogenesis. The most significant (sometime spirite~ discussion sessions have been included at the end of every section. Their clarifying nature is further supported by the final section (V), which summarizes and reviews the current state of the art on the genetic apparatus and its constituents. All chapters have selected up-to-date references; quite a few have an extensive bibliography both in terms of basic reference books and most recent findings. A few chapters, dealing at the level of intact cell and/or in classical genetic terms, with aging, differentiation and neoplastic transformation, have been included to furnish a more comprehensive view of fundamental cell functions directly and indirectly related to the structure and function of the genetic apparatus. At the same time it is hoped that interested students and investigators will find in the chapters of this volume the necessary and stimulating introduction to the wide variety of fundamental mechanism and phenomena occurring in higher eukaryotes.

Chromatin and Chromosome Structure consists of chapters that reflect a 1975 seminar course and the reported observations after the session. The seminar is organized for the benefit of both faculty and students in the Biology Ph.D. Program of the City University of New York. This book begins with a presentation of the conformational studies of histones. It then describes the histone-DNA interactions and the subunits isolated either from chromatin or from nuclei. It also explains the post-synthetic modifications of histone structure. Furthermore, the book talks about the chemistry and function of nuclear nonhistone proteins, low molecular weight nuclear RNA, and polytene chromosome structure. The regulation of gene expression in chick oviduct model system and the main features of lampbrush chromosomes are shown as well. Aside from the students and faculty of the above-mentioned university, this compilation will be invaluable as well to other undergraduate and graduate students; professors; and researchers. It will also be a good reference to those who are specializing in chromatin and chromosome studies.

Transcription factors are the molecules that the cell uses to interpret the genome: they possess sequence-specific DNA-binding activity, and either directly or indirectly influence the transcription of genes. In aggregate, transcription factors control gene expression and genome organization, and play a pivotal role in many aspects of physiology and evolution. This book provides a reference for major aspects of transcription factor function, encompassing a general catalogue of known transcription factor classes, origins and evolution of specific transcription factor types, methods for studying transcription factor binding sites in vitro, in vivo, and in silico, and mechanisms of interaction with chromatin and RNA polymerase.

Since 2012, thousands of human genomes have been completely sequenced, and many more have been mapped at lower levels of resolution. The resulting data is used worldwide in biomedical sciences, anthropology, forensic medicine and other branches of science. Recent results suggest that most of the vast amounts of non-coding DNA within the genome have associated biochemical activities, including regulation of gene expression, organization of chromosome architecture and signals that control epigenetic inheritance. Summary of the contents of this book: Organization of human chromosomes Nuclear organization and rearrangements in pluripotent cells Organization of the human genome Repetitive elements and human disorders Mitochondrial DNA Cell division The cell cycle The phases of mitosis The human karyotype Karyotype analysis Types of staining Meiosis Cytokinesis The Second Meiotic Division (Meiosis II)
