Description : This book presents a systematic, in-depth and comparative analysis of the role of the EU in the process of international state-building, and is one of the first comprehensive books to do so, at an international level. Taking the case of Kosovo, it examines the EU's role in the birth of a state in comparison to other international actors from 1999–2008 and moves on to analyse the EU's role in norm diffusion in the post-independence period (2008-2020). Throughout the book, the author draws parallel analysis with broader debates and scholarly literature regarding the EU’s role as a state-builder or norm-diffuser. Combining a liberal peace thesis framework with the normative power Europe (NPE) approach, it analyses how successful the EU and other international actors were in the diffusion of tangible and normative impacts in the process of state-building in Kosovo (1999–2008), along with the EU’s diffusion of normative impact from 2008-2020. Finally, it scrutinises the role of the EU and other international actors in the processes of state-building through transference tools (funding) and overt tools (political role). This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of EU foreign policy, European politics, peace and conflict studies, the Western Balkans, state building, international organisations and more broadly to international relations.

Description : The social and emotional welfare of students in both K-12 and higher education settings has become increasingly important during the third decade of the 21st century, as students face a variety of social-emotional learning (SEL) challenges related to a multitude of internal and external factors. As concepts around traditional literacy education evolve and become more culturally and linguistically relevant, the connections between SEL and academic literacy opportunities warrant considerable exploration. This text provides a variety of research and practice protocols supporting student success through the integration of SEL and literacy across grade levels. Covering topics such as culturally relevant literacy, digital literacy, and content-area literacy, this handbook is essential for curriculum directors, education faculty, instructional facilitators, literacy professionals, practicing teachers, pre-service teachers, professional development coordinators, school counselors, teacher preparation programs, academicians, researchers, and students.

Description : 'The perfect companion to the seasons' - India Knight Welcome to The Almanac: A Seasonal Guide to 2021. If you are new to The Almanac then welcome; if you are a regular reader then hello! The Almanac is about celebrating the unfolding year in all its various facets. The old dependables which I include every year are back: moon phases, sun rises and sets, tide time tables and the sky at night. As ever there are seasonal recipes and monthly gardening tips for the flower and vegetable garden too, as well as a bit of folklore, and nature and a song for each month. This year's edition has a theme: movement, migration and pilgrimage. This was not a reaction to the unsettling events of last year - it was half written by the time Covid-19 hit - but writing it from lockdown did give me a heightened appreciation of the way in which Britain and Ireland have always and continue to be places of movement, and are intimately connected to the rest of the world. You will find within this book migration tales for each month of this year, but I have also searched out seasonal tales of human movement, and included a pilgrimage for each month, some ancient, some current, all underlining the spiritual benefits of putting one foot in front of the other. Every month I have included a method of navigating using the stars, sun or moon, so you can find your way around in the dark (or just look out of your window and know where south is). And our monthly folk songs are all shanties this year, work songs with movement at their very heart, created to coordinate muscle power to drive sailing ships backwards and forwards across the Atlantic Ocean, and containing influences from the eastern seaboard of the US down to the Caribbean and beyond mixed with British and Irish folk traditions. These songs are stitched through with movement and travel, as is this Almanac. PRAISE FOR THE ALMANAC: A SEASONAL GUIDE 'This book is your bible' - The Independent 'An ideal stocking filler' - The English Garden 'I love this gem of a book' - Cerys Matthews 'Indispensable' - Sir Bob Geldof 'An uplifting nature-inspired guide' - Country & Town House magazine

Description : The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted life as we knew it. Lockdowns, self-isolation and quarantine have become a normal part of everyday life. Pandemic surveillance allows governments and corporations to monitor and surveil the spread of the virus and to make sure citizens follow the measures they put in place. This is evident in the massive, unprecedented mobilization of public health data to contain and combat the virus, and the ballooning of surveillance technologies such as contact-tracing apps, facial recognition, and population tracking. This can also be seen as a pandemic of surveillance. In this timely book, David Lyon tracks the development of these methods, examining different forms of pandemic surveillance, in health-related and other areas, from countries around the world. He explores their benefits and disadvantages, their legal status, and how they relate to privacy protection, an ethics of care, and data justice. Questioning whether this new culture of surveillance will become a permanent feature of post-pandemic societies and the long-term negative effects this might have on social inequalities and human freedoms, Pandemic Surveillance highlights the magnitude of COVID-19-related surveillance expansion. The book also underscores the urgent need for new policies relating to surveillance and data justice in the twenty-first century.

Description : "One century ago, in 1921, as the American colossus was emerging on the world stage, a populist backlash against foreign immigration was reinforced by fears of a global pandemic known as the Spanish flu. The backlash was bipartisan, and "emergency" legislation passed the U.S. Congress overwhelmingly. That decision was strategically myopic, undercutting the source of America's surprisingly sudden strength. Indeed, immigrants and the sons of immigrants filled the ranks of the victorious U.S. Army coming home from Europe after World War One, and it was the sons of immigrants who would fill the ranks in World War Two as well. Only during the Cold War era did America's leaders realize that its isolationist immigration laws were harmful. In 2021, the U.S. is stronger than ever on the world stage, yet ironically finds itself in a situation that mirrors that of 1921: populism combined with a global pandemic. Even as Joe Biden's Democratic Party takes over the reins of the federal government, limits on foreign travel are more extreme than ever. Whole countries are all but blockaded, and the emergency justification for keeping out potentially diseased foreigners in the Covid era will be hard to overcome. People, even enlightened voters in great democracies, are not very good at measuring short-term gains against long-term costs"--

Description : This book provides a rich analysis of the actors and organizations to reflect on the antecedents and trajectories of terrorism and insurgency in South Asia, and the different countermeasures adopted by the countries to deal with the security and developmental challenges. South Asia is a complex geography that has been both a victim and a playing field for indigenous insurgencies, and domestic and transnational terrorist movements. The contributors to this volume explore how this situation has posed serious challenges to the sovereignty of the states, to national and human security, and to the socioeconomic fabric of the communities, and to the ethnic and religious cohesion. The book provides detailed studies of country cases on terrorism, security, and insurgencies, and it underlines the national, regional, and global implications of the threats that emanate from this region. Presenting an opportunity to diversify away from a Western-centric focus on terrorism and security, this book will be valuable to researchers in political science, criminology, defense and security studies, and to policy makers and think tanks.
