Danger Close Book Excerpt:

Phil Gioia grew up an army brat during the decades after World War II. Drawn to the military, he attended the Virginia Military Institute, then was commissioned in the U.S. Army, where he completed Jump School and Ranger School. Not even a year after college graduation, he landed in Vietnam in early 1968—in the first weeks of the Tet offensive, which marked a major escalation of the war. Leading a platoon in the 82nd Airborne Division, Gioia took his paratroopers into the lifting of the siege of Hué—where death was always just around the corner—and the grisly discovery of mass graves of those executed by the Vietcong, during their occupation of the city. Wounded, he was sent home in April. Released from hospital, he commanded a paratroop company in the 82nd Airborne in 1968, returning to Vietnam with the hard-hitting First Air Cavalry Division a year later, this time leading a rucksack company of light infantry. Inserted into far-flung landing zones, Gioia and his men patrolled the jungles and rubber plantations along the Cambodian border, looking for a furtive enemy who preferred ambushes to set-piece battles and nighttime raids to daylight attacks. Danger Close! recounts the Vietnam War from the unique boots-on-the-ground perspective of a young officer who served two tours in two different divisions. He tells his story thoughtfully, straightforwardly, and always vividly, from the raw emotions of unearthing massacred human beings to the terrors of fighting in the dark, with red and green tracers slicing the air. Hard to put down and hard to forget, Danger Close! will remind readers of the best Vietnam memoirs, like Guns Up! and Baptism.

British Special Forces Book Excerpt:

This is the first comprehensive history of all the British Special Forces, from their beginnings during the Second World War to the Falklands War. The birth of many of the Special Forces was controversial - they were accused of being 'private armies' and a waste of valuable manpower that could have been better used within the regular forces. Their existence was justified only by their successes. The secrecy that still surrounds some of the Special Forces makes writing an authoritative history no easy task. William Seymour's fascinating narrative draws on a wide variety of documentary sources and eye-witness accounts from surviving members of the Forces. The Special Forces covered are: The Commandos, the Special Boat Section, Combined Operations Pilotage Parties, the Long Range Desert Group, Popski's Private Army, The Special Air Service, the Special Boat Squadron and Raiding Forces, and the Royal Marines Special Forces. From the chaungs of Burma to the African desert, the Greek islands to the D-Day landing beaches, Special Forces played a vital part in Allied victory in the Second World War.

Every Last Drop Book Excerpt:

Private investigators Troy and Eva Winters are looking forward to a visit with their old college buddy, Joe, when he invites them over for a barbecue and to talk over details of a case. The night soon turns awkward when Joe’s neighbors are overheard in an argument, which suddenly turns deadly silent. When Troy completes the assignment and brings the evidence to Joe, his friend is nowhere to be found. Troy’s life is soon in danger when he begins a search and stumbles across the neighbor’s evil secret. As Eva stays behind to dig up clues, State Trooper Mike Stevens joins Troy in a frenzied trip across the country to find a killer, who leaves bodies like breadcrumbs of clues in a nefarious chase from Oregon to Florida. Private Investigators Troy and Eva Winters Thriller Series books are listed in chronological order below #1 Victim of a Delusional Mind #2 Dead Man's Money #3 Every Last Drop Editorial Review “Private Investigator Troy Winters is asked to investigate a case for an old friend, but the friend’s case pales in comparison to what’s going on with the friend’s next-door neighbor, who appears to be hiding something evil. When the friend goes missing and foul play is suspected, Troy and Sergeant Mike Stevens begin a chase across the country on a hunt for a killer, while Troy’s wife and fellow investigator, Eva, stays behind to help with research. This race against the clock is a clever addition to North’s PI thriller series.” Angela M., Line Editor, Red Adept Editing
