Description : Lawns now blanket thirty million acres of the United States, but until the late nineteenth century few Americans had any desire for a front lawn, much less access to seeds for growing one. In her comprehensive history of this uniquely American obsession, Virginia Scott Jenkins traces the origin of the front lawn aesthetic, the development of the lawn-care industry, its environmental impact, and modern as well as historic alternatives to lawn mania.

Description : The forest plantations in the Biltmore Estate, near Biltmore and Asheville, N.C., represent one of the earliest large-scale reforestation projects under private initiative in this country. Planting and seed-sowing operations were begun there about 40 years ago, in 1890, and the work was continued until about 1911. The resulting stands present an excellent opportunity to study the success or failure of forest planting with a large number of species in this part of the southern Appalachian region.
