Discoveries in the Overworld Book Excerpt:

Harriet, Jack, and Toby are treasure hunters, searching the Minecraft world for its most valuable hidden secrets. In an abandoned mineshaft, they discover what they hope is an enchanted book. But what they’ve found turns out to be much more valuable. William is one of Minecraft’s most renowned explorers. He’s a legend in the world of Minecraft, but, under suspicious circumstances, he’s gone missing. The book they’ve discovered is a journal—a lost journal that once belonged to William the Explorer. Ignoring the ominous DO NOT OPEN THIS BOOK! warning scribbled across the journal, the treasure hunters delve into the book’s pages. Filled with the knowledge William has gathered during his adventures, the journal offers invaluable information for the treasure hunters. The promise of hidden strongholds filled with treasure is too good to resist, and the trio begins an epic journey in search of rare goods and possibly even the long-lost explorer himself. This is the first book in the new Lost Minecraft Journals series. The chapters of each book alternate between the journal entries (William’s story) and the story of the treasure hunters. Fans of Minecraft won’t want to miss this wild new adventure. Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers—picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. This is the novel of four who defied the powers of the matrix guardians - fanatics who protected those powers so that the planet of the ruddy sun might never fall beneath the influence of the materialistic Terrans. The four who found themselves fused into a terrifying unity in that defiance were two men and two women. The men were Damon Ridenow, a Comyn of the ruling caste, and Andrew Carr, the Earthman who had won for himself the right of clan-entry. The women were Ellemir, betrothed of Damon, and Callista, who foreswore her vows to seek the love of the alien from the stars. All the forces of the Ancient Darkover were to combine to resist this "unnatural" alliance - and the novel that grew out of this physical and psychic conflict displays the talent of Marion Zimmer Bradley at its finest! The story of the building of the Forbidden Tower - and its ultimate fate - will stand high in the bestselling Darkover saga.

Game Writing Book Excerpt:

As the videogame industry has grown up, the need for better stories and characters has dramatically increased, yet traditional screenwriting techniques alone cannot equip writers for the unique challenges of writing stories where the actions and decisions of a diverse range of players are at the centre of every narrative experience. Game Writing: Narrative Skills for Videogames was the first book to demystify the emerging field of game writing by identifying and explaining the skills required for creating videogame narrative. Through the insights and experiences of professional game writers, this revised edition captures a snapshot of the narrative skills employed in today's game industry and presents them as practical articles accompanied by exercises for developing the skills discussed. The book carefully explains the foundations of the craft of game writing, detailing all aspects of the process from the basics of narrative to guiding the player and the challenges of nonlinear storytelling. Throughout the book there is a strong emphasis on the skills developers and publishers expect game writers to know. This second edition brings the material up to date and adds four new chapters covering MMOs, script formats, narrative design for urban games, and new ways to think about videogame narrative as an art form. Suitable for both beginners and experienced writers, Game Writing is the essential guide to all the techniques of game writing. There's no better starting point for someone wishing to get into this exciting field, whether they are new game writers wishing to hone their skills, or screenwriters hoping to transfer their skills to the games industry.

The Palgrave Handbook of Steam Age Gothic Book Excerpt:

By the early 1830s the old school of Gothic literature was exhausted. Late Romanticism, emphasising as it did the uncertainties of personality and imagination, gave it a new lease of life. Gothic—the literature of disturbance and uncertainty—now produced works that reflected domestic fears, sexual crimes, drug filled hallucinations, the terrible secrets of middle class marriage, imperial horror at alien invasion, occult demonism and the insanity of psychopaths. It was from the 1830s onwards that the old gothic castle gave way to the country house drawing room, the dungeon was displaced by the sewers of the city and the villains of early novels became the familiar figures of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Dracula, Dorian Grey and Jack the Ripper. After the death of Prince Albert (1861), the Gothic became darker, more morbid, obsessed with demonic lovers, blood sucking ghouls, blood stained murderers and deranged doctors. Whilst the gothic architecture of the Houses of Parliament and the new Puginesque churches upheld a Victorian ideal of sobriety, Christianity and imperial destiny, Gothic literature filed these new spaces with a dread that spread like a plague to America, France, Germany and even Russia. From 1830 to 1914, the period covered by this volume, we saw the emergence of the greats of Gothic literature and the supernatural from Edgar Allan Poe to Emily Bronte, from Sheridan Le Fanu to Bram Stoker and Robert Louis Stevenson. Contributors also examine the fin-de-siècle dreamers of decadence such as Arthur Machen, M P Shiel and Vernon Lee and their obsession with the occult, folklore, spiritualism, revenants, ghostly apparitions and cosmic annihilation. This volume explores the period through the prism of architectural history, urban studies, feminism, 'hauntology' and much more. 'Horror', as Poe teaches us, 'is the soul of the plot'.

At once polemical, insightful and thought-provoking, Conceiving God is essential reading for all those interested in the origins of religious thought, and the respective roles of science and religion in contemporary society. Building on the insights and discoveries of his two earlier books, The Mind in the Cave and Inside the Neolithic Mind, cognitive archaeologist David Lewis-Williams explores how science developed within the cocoon of religion and then shows how the natural functioning of the human brain creates experiences that can lead to belief in the supernatural realm.

Stevie and Alex hook up with Stevie’s best friend Maison, and the three quickly begin looking for answers. While they look, Herobrine is drawing ever closer. Someone is stealing the villagers’ most precious belongings, including Stevie’s cat, Ossie. People are angry and turning against one another. And there are mysterious signs appearing around the Overworld. Stevie, Maison, and Alex must unearth more music discs, piece together clues from the nightmares, and, ultimately, confront Herobrine—the most feared being of all—at his dark home in an abandoned temple high atop a forbidding mountain.
