Discrete Contact Mechanics with Applications in Tribology Book Excerpt:

Discrete Contact Mechanics with Applications in Tribology presents new solutions to contact problems for elastic and viscoelastic bodies in normal, sliding, and rolling contact, taking into account effects such as surface microgeometry, adhesion, fluid films, and viscous hysteresis in bulk material or surface layers. These solutions are applied to problems in tribology for modeling contact and friction of bodies with surface microgeometry (rough or textured). The book provides exact mathematical formulations for cases of discrete contact based on classical approaches of contact mechanics, allowing readers to study the influence of different parameters of surface microgeometry on contact characteristics and friction force. The book will help solve problems in modeling contact and friction interaction in cases of discrete character of contact interaction, mutual influence of individual contact spots in contact interaction of elastic and viscoelastic solids, calculating sliding and rolling friction forces as a result of adhesive and viscoelastic mechanisms of dissipation, and more. Provides a raft of solutions to contact problems for elastic and viscoelastic materials in normal, sliding, and rolling contact Provides solutions and formulations that consider surface microgeometry, adhesion, fluid films, viscous hysteresis in bulk material or surface layers, and other common material effects Features applied methods based on classical contact mechanics approaches, allowing for analytic and half-analytic treatment of problems

Contact Mechanics in Tribology Book Excerpt:

Tribology is the science of friction, lubrication and wear of moving components. Results obtained from tribology are used to reduce energy losses in friction pro cesses, to reduce material losses due to wear, and to increase the service life of components. Contact Mechanics plays an important role in Tribology. Contact Mechanics studies the stress and strain states of bodies in contact; it is contact that leads to friction interaction and wear. This book investigates a variety of contact problems: discrete contact of rough surfaces, the effect of imperfect elasticity and mechanical inhomogeneity of contacting bodies, models of friction and wear, changes in contact characteristics during the wear process, etc. The results presented in this book were obtained during my work at the Insti tute for Problems in Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The first steps of this research were carried out under the supervision of Professor L. A. Galin who taught me and showed me the beauty of scientific research and solutions. Some of the problems included in the book were investigated together with my col leagues Dr. M. N. Dobychin, Dr. O. G. Chekina, Dr. I. A. Soldatenkov, and Dr. E. V. Tor skaya from the Laboratory of Friction and Wear (IPM RAS) and Prof. F. Sadeghi from Purdue University (West Lafayette, USA). I would like to express my thanks to them. I am very grateful to Professor G. M. L.

Contact Problems Book Excerpt:

L.A. Galin’s book on contact problems is a remarkable work. Actually there are two books: the first, published in 1953 deals with contact problems in the classical theory of elasticity; this is the one that was translated into English in 1961. The second book, published in 1980, included the first, and then had new sections on contact problems for viscoelastic materials, and rough contact problems; this section has not previously been translated into English. In this new translation, the original text and the mathematical analysis have been completely revised, new material has been added, and the material appearing in the 1980 Russian translation has been completely rewritten. In addition there are three essays by students of Galin, bringing the analysis up to date.

Micro Nanotribology and Its Applications Book Excerpt:

Micro/nanotribology as a field is concerned with experimental and theoretical investigations of processes ranging from atomic and molecular scales to the microscale, occurring during adhesion, friction, wear, and thin-film lubrication at sliding surfaces. As a field it is truly interdisciplinary, but this confronts the would-be entrant with the difficulty of becoming familiar with the basic theories and applications: the area is not covered in any undergraduate or graduate scientific curriculum. The present work commences with a history of tribology and micro/nanotribology, followed by discussions of instrumentation, basic theories of friction, wear and lubrication on nano- to microscales, and their industrial applications. A variety of research instruments are covered, including a variety of scanning probe microscopes and surface force apparatus. Experimental research and modelling are expertly dealt with, the emphasis throughout being applied aspects.

Diverse techniques applied in predicting wear behavior by mathematical models, FE modeling and ANN approach are discussed. The book reviews key features of extraordinary conditions associated with, but not limited to, harsh environments, severe sliding and poor lubrication challenges. A basic understanding of failure modes in tribological systems is covered. The state-of-the-art research on tribology under these extreme conditions is extensively discussed, which will be of interest to researchers. The book highlights solutions for extreme tribology problems and provides an overview of various factors affecting tribosystems in harsh conditions.

The English edition of “Contact Mechanics and Friction” lying before you is, for st the most part, the text of the 1 German edition (Springer Publishing, 2009). The book was expanded by the addition of a chapter on frictional problems in ear- quake research. Additionally, Chapter 15 was supplemented by a section on elasto-hydrodynamics. The problem sections of several chapters were enriched by the addition of new examples. This book would not have been possible without the active support of J. Gray, who translated it from the German edition. I would like to thank Prof. G. G. - charyan and Prof. S. Sobolev for discussions and critical comments on the chapter over earthquake dynamics. Dr. R. Heise made significant contributions to the - velopment and correction of new problems. I would like to convey my affecti- ate thanks to Dr. J. Starcevic for her complete support during the composition of this book. I want to thank Ms. Ch. Koll for her patience in creating figures and Dr. R. Heise, M. Popov, M. Heß, S. Kürscher, and B.
