Description : Excerpt from Mehemet, the Kurd, Other Tales: Eastern Sources HE following tales, which are now published, were trans lated by me whilst I was engaged in the study of Eastern languages. They have lain in my desk for several years, and I should never have ventured to bring them to the light, had I not been strongly urged to do so by those who had read the manuscript. Description : Excerpt from Fables Folk-Tales From an Eastern Forest Here, however, it is perhaps worth noting that although the Mouse-deer as a master of slimness is given the preeminent place among all the beasts of the field, its mantle is sometimes temporarily permitted to fall upon the shoulders of other and quite different members of the animal creation. Hence we hnd in the 14th story, that the King crow is worsted by a Water-snai], and I may add that in a Javanese fable of the same type (for which compare our own 'hare-and-tortoise' F able) the Mouse-deer itself plays the part of the deceived, instead of that of the deceiver. But the subject of the mutual relations of the Beasts in Malayan Fable is one which has yet to be worked out, and which lies unfortunately far beyond the bounds of the present disquisition. Description : Excerpt from Alexis, the Tyrant of the East: A Persian Tale The following truly interesting History was selected from a number of very valuable Manuscripts in the Persian language, found in the Alexandrian Library at the time of the Invasion of Egypt by the French: It has been considered as a true and lively picture of the barbarous manners and licentious ha bits of those early ages. - It contains d succinct Account of the extraordinary Adventures of that blood-stained Tyrant of the East, whose valor Ous exploits and daring crimes were long the con slant Theme of the Persian Bards; and whose fame is still proverbial in all Quarters of the Eastern World - The melancholy fate which at last awaited him, and closed a life fraught with the most atrocious acts of villany, resulting from the unrestrained indulgence of criminal Desires and a boundless Ambition, conveys a most salu tary lesson and a sure conviction to the reflecting. At the time of which we speak, it was called Brown's ford, and a family of that name resided there. Description : Excerpt from Visits to Walt Whitman in 1890-1891 The little volume entitled A Visit to Walt Whitman and some of his friends in 1890, by John Johnston, M.D., published in '1898 and well known to subsequent students of Whitman, though often asked for, has been long out of print. Its contents are here presented to the public anew. This portion of the present volume was originally written without any thought of publication, and consists of Diary Notes written - immediately after the interviews they report - for a small group of friends. At their request they were afterwards printed in pamphlet form for private circulation, and a copy was sent to Whitman. He endorsed it very heartily, l and sent us a list of his friends to whom he wished copies to be sent. The demand for copies led eventually to a complete publication of the Notes, and they were printed as originally written, with the expressed hope that Whatever they may lack in literary form, they may present, in the most direct and perfect manner possible, the actual impressions of the time. Description : Excerpt from Eastern Legendary Tales and Oriental Romances: Being a Representation of Oriental Manners, and Habits, Exhibiting a True Picture of Eastern Society In the centre of the semicircle, and with a free walk all round it, is a mass of rock left solid, but carved externally like a dome, and so as to bear a strong general likeness to our Saviour's sepulchre, as it is now chiseled away and enclosed in St. Helena's Church at Jerusalem. On the top of the dome is a sort of spreading ornament, like the capital of a co lumu. It is, apparently, intended to support some thing; and I was afterwards told at Carlee, where such an ornament, but of greater size, is also found, that a large gilt umbrella used to spring from it. This solid dome appears to be the usual symbol of Bhuddist adoration, and, with its umbrella ornament, may be traced in the shoo-madoo of Pegu and other more remote structures of the same faith. Though different in its form and style of ornament from the Lingam, I cannot help thinking that it was originally intended to represent the same popular object of that almost universal idolatry, which Scripture, with good reason, describes as uncleanness and abomination.'
