Clint Eastwood s Cinema of Trauma Book Excerpt:

"Clint Eastwood's movies have presented sympathetic narratives of characters enduring personal trauma as they turn to violence to survive calamity or sustain social order. In this collection of new essays, contributors examine his films as studies on PTSD that expose the social conditions that tolerate or trigger traumatization and imagine a way through individual and collective trauma"--

The Cinema of Clint Eastwood Book Excerpt:

He became a movie star playing The Man With No Name, and today his name is known around the world. Measured by longevity, productivity, and profits, Clint Eastwood is the most successful actor-director-producer in American film history. This book examines the major elements of his career, focusing primarily on his work as a director but also exploring the evolution of his acting style, his long association with screen violence, his interest in jazz, and the political views – sometimes hotly controversial – reflected in his films and public statements. Especially fascinating is the pivotal question that divides critics and moviegoers to this day: is Eastwood a capable director with a photogenic face, a modest acting talent, and a flair for marketing his image? Or is he a true cinematic auteur with a distinctive vision of America’s history, traditions, and values? From A Fistful of Dollars and Dirty Harry to Million Dollar Baby and beyond, The Cinema of Clint Eastwood takes a close-up look at one of the screen’s most influential and charismatic stars.

Gorgeous War Book Excerpt:

Gorgeous War argues that the Nazis used the swastika as part of a visually sophisticated propaganda program that was not only modernist but also the forerunner of contemporary brand identity. When the United States military tried to answer Nazi displays of graphic power, it failed. In the end the best graphic response to the Nazis was produced by the Walt Disney Company. Using numerous examples of US and Nazi military heraldry, Gorgeous War compares the way the American and German militaries developed their graphic and textile design in the interwar period. The book shows how social and cultural design movements like modernism altered and were altered by both militaries. It also explores how nascent corporate culture and war production united to turn national brands like IBM, Coca-Cola, and Disney into multinational corporations that had learned lessons on propaganda and branding that were being tested during the Second World War. What is the legacy of apparently toxic signs like the swastika? The answer may not be what we hoped. Inheritors of the post-Second World War world increasingly struggle to find an escape from an intensely branded environment—to find a place in their lives that is free of advertising and propaganda. This book suggests that we look again at how it is our culture makes that struggle into an appealing Gorgeous War.

The Routledge Handbook of Global Cultural Policy Book Excerpt:

Cultural policy intersects with political, economic, and socio-cultural dynamics at all levels of society, placing high and often contradictory expectations on the capabilities and capacities of the media, the fine, performing, and folk arts, and cultural heritage. These expectations are articulated, mobilised and contested at – and across – a global scale. As a result, the study of cultural policy has firmly established itself as a field that cuts across a range of academic disciplines, including sociology, cultural and media studies, economics, anthropology, area studies, languages, geography, and law. This Routledge Handbook of Global Cultural Policy sets out to broaden the field’s consideration to recognise the necessity for international and global perspectives. The book explores how cultural policy has become a global phenomenon. It brings together a diverse range of researchers whose work reveals how cultural policy expresses and realises common global concerns, dominant narratives, and geopolitical economic and social inequalities. The sections of the book address cultural policy’s relation to core academic disciplines and core questions, of regulations, rights, development, practice, and global issues. With a cross-section of country-by-country case studies, this comprehensive volume is a map for academics and students seeking to become more globally orientated cultural policy scholars.

What If The Devil Created Earth Book Excerpt:

In the beginning the Devil created Hell on Earth. The skies were red as fire and the oceans and seas ran deep with blood. The Devil liked what he created, so he created a demon called Beelzebub, meaning "Prince of Demons" in his likeness and set him out into the world to enjoy the Hell that was created. The Devil explained to Beelzebub "whatever you do don’t eat the fruit from the Garden of Hell."Beelzebub replied “why master, it looks tasty.” The Devil answered, “If you do, you won’t see the wonderful Hell that I have created for you. Just to make sure you don’t eat of the tree, I have created Gargoyles to guard the tree so you won’t be tempted.” Everything was going well until Beelzebub was feeling lonely and wanted companionship. Beelzebub asked the Devil "Is there any way you could create someone to keep me company while I enjoy this Hell you have created." "If this will make Hell better for you then so be it. I will make a female as your companion. I will name her Mania, which means Goddess of Hell. She will bare demon children for you both to bring up in this Hell I have created for you. Now go into Hell and have yourselves a Hell of a time," said the Devil.

The Phantom Miner Book Excerpt:

I can still remember the story my grandfather use to tell me on a stormy night at bedtime. When he tucked me in I would pull the covers over my head and close my eyes and shake like a leaf and pray for daylight to arrive soon. What a story he could tell. Now that I'm all grown up, I feel I should share it with the rest of the scary story fans. This story dates back to the mid 1800's around the Gold Rush days when everyone had gold fever running through their veins. The town where it all happened was a little town called Clantondale and Tom Barkley had the gold fever like no one else. He didn't have many friends or even a pretty lady to keep him company. All Tom thought about was striking it rich and keeping it all to himself. Tom got lucky a few times just to keep his gold fever going, but it wouldn't be long before his gold fever would run out for good. Tom's luck got better, but at a high price. He just couldn't get enough. The more he got, the greedier he got, and more violent he became. Booze and gold was a bad mixture for Tom. Tom started spying on other prospectors and decided if he could knock them off just as they found the gold, he could take all their gold and no one would ever find out. Tom really liked the idea of not having to prospect. Why not let someone else find the gold, and just kill them and run off with the gold. But it wasn't long before some other prospector caught Tom in his dirty tricks and decided to set him up and knock him off. Tom Watson and his friend lured Tom Barkley to an abandoned mine shaft and told him there was lots of gold and they would share it with him.

Beware of the Other Side s Book Excerpt:

This interdisciplinary study examines the still vivid phenomenon of the most controversial psychiatric diagnosis in the United States: multiple personality disorder, now called dissociative identity disorder. This syndrome comprehends the occurrence of two or more distinct identities that take control of a person's behavior paired with an inexplicable memory loss. Synthesizing the fields of psychiatry and the dynamics of the disorder with its influential representation in American fiction, the study researches how psychiatry and fiction mutually shaped a mysterious syndrome and how this reciprocal process created a genre fiction of its own that persists until today in a very distinct self-referential mode.

It Was Just an Accident Book Excerpt:

Susie Edwards found out at an early age how looks can be an advantage if you do something wrong. It all started with small things like the family pet. One day when Susie was out walking the dog, she wanted to see if she could get away with killing the dog. Susie took the dog about twenty feet in front of the edge of a cliff deep within the woods in back of her house and threw a stick and told the dog to go fetch it. The dog did as asked and went over the edge of the cliff to its death. Susie thought this was really cool, but Susie didn't realize killing things isn't such a cool thing to do. Susie was such a likeable person who had many friends, but Susie was getting pretty bored with their company and never forgot about the rush she got when she watched her dog run off the edge of the cliff to its death. Susie was ready to test the waters of death on her friends. Susie invited three of her closest friends over for a sleep over.

Coffee Culture Book Excerpt:

Coffee Culture: Local experiences, Global Connections explores coffee as (1) a major commodity that shapes the lives of millions of people; (2) a product with a dramatic history; (3) a beverage with multiple meanings and uses (energizer, comfort food, addiction, flavouring, and confection); (4) an inspiration for humor and cultural critique; (5) a crop that can help protect biodiversity yet also threaten the environment; (6) a health risk and a health food; and (7) a focus of alternative trade efforts. This book presents coffee as a commodity that ties the world together, from the coffee producers and pickers who tend the plantations in tropical nations, to the middlemen and processors, to the consumers who drink coffee without ever having to think about how the drink reached their hands.
