Description : This volume, first published in 1921, presents a series of portraits of Einstein, thus offering glimpses in the character and private reflections of the man who changed the course of modern science. Intended neither as a biography, nor as a résumé of Einsteinian physics, Einstein: The Searcher instead focusses on Einstein’s relationship with the scientific project as he himself conceived it, and so is still of contemporary significance for those puzzled by the spirit of scientific enquiry.

Description : Einstein: The First Hundred Years presents the great contribution of Albert Einstein to the development of science. This book discusses the significant role of Einstein's existence as a scientist who turned out to be a great public figure that changed the society's consciousness of science for good. Organized into five parts encompassing 17 chapters, this book begins with an overview of Albert Einstein's achievement as the greatest theoretical physicist of his age and he was universally recognized at 37. This text then provides Einstein's major contribution to the special and general theories of relativity. Other chapters consider Einstein's work on the development of quantum theory for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1921. This book discusses as well Brownian movement and statistical theories by Einstein. The final chapter deals with the increasing widespread interest in Einstein's work. This book is a valuable resource for scientists, physicists, teachers, and students.

Description : This new volume will give readers a complete history of the development of relativistic cosmology in the first half of the twentieth century. It traces the beginnings of the theory in 1917 with Einstein's first static model of the universe based on general relativity, and follows his conversion to the new cosmology after a series of controversial meetings with Dutch astronomer Willem De Sitter. The impact of these discussions on Eddington and Weyl, who later formulated the most fundamental principle of cosmology is examined, while the works of Friedmann and Lema tre, pioneers of the expanding universe theory, are covered in-depth. This valuable history will also provide insights on how and why the relativistic way of thinking contributes to some of the most enduring philosophical issues of our time.

Description : The novel opens with a competent young lady, Miss Mannering, and her companion arriving at Tilbury docks and embarking on a steamer. The narrative then flashes back to when she first arrived as a young girl in London and tells the story of how she came to be boarding this ship. Violet (Vi), a newly arrived in London and rather naive, young girl, gets a job in a City restaurant known as Kendricks. By dint of her level-headedness and hard work she rises through the ranks until Mr Kendrick, disgusted at the disreputable behaviour of his only son, leaves her the restaurant in his will. She also opens various other establishments. Vi is plagued by various members of her family who arrive in London seeking, usually financial, help but she also takes on her flighty sister’s illegitimate son, Henry, and becomes very fond of him. When the boy is eight, Vi falls in love with Mr Calder, a colleague of her brother who is working in Bolivia. Her sister comes to reclaim her son and Vi decides to leave forthwith for South America taking Henry with her.
