Alien Hunters A Space Opera Trilogy Book Excerpt:

Got trouble with aliens? Call the Alien Hunters. This bundle includes all three novels in this fast-paced, sci-fi adventure. BOOK 1: Alien Hunters -- The skelkrins. Predators from deep space. Creatures of claws, fangs, and malice. Riff and his crew are the Alien Hunters, ragtag mercenaries who travel the galaxy, trapping and removing cosmic critters. They're just galactic pest controllers, not an army. When the skelkrins attack, will the Alien Hunters be the ones hunting aliens . . . or will aliens hunt them? BOOK 2: Alien Sky -- The Singularity. The day the machines gained awareness. The day they turned cruel. The robotic fleet swarms across the galaxy, slaying all in its path. The Alien Hunters--outgunned, outsmarted, outclassed--fly up to meet these killer robots. The battle between life and machine begins. BOOK 3: Alien Shadows -- On a dead planet orbiting a black hole, shadows stir. Some call them ghosts, others merely figments of the imagination. As these astral beings spread across the cosmos, the Alien Hunters stare into the darkness of deepest space . . . and find terror.

Contract of War Spectras Arise Trilogy Book 2 Book Excerpt:

UNITY OR TYRANNY. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THE BODY COUNT. In the aftermath of a system-wide war between the Admin and Corp Loyalists and the non-citizen population of the Algols, everything once resembling order has been leveled. Scattered enclaves of survivors dot the worlds, living in snarled lawlessness how ever they can. Aly Erikson and her crew have carved out a niche of relative peace, doing their best to go on with their lives through salvaging, scavenging, and stealing. But with no force left to keep the lid on the pot, the pressures of chaos and discord soon cause conflicts to boil over. As enemies close in from all directions, even sometimes from within, the crew once again must fight—not just for survival, not just for their way of life, but this time for a future that can finally lay to rest the system’s bloody and savage past. Spectras Arise Omnibus Box Set Book Excerpt:

A SOLDIER’S CONTRACT NEVER TERMINATES. In a few hundred years, the Algol system becomes humanity’s new home. The question is: Is it a better one? CONTRACT OF DEFIANCE, CONTRACT OF BETRAYAL, and CONTRACT OF WAR follow former Corpsmember Aly Erikson and her crew of anti-Admin smugglers through ever-escalating life-and-death adventures and the trials of a living on the side of liberty and freedom—whether they agree with the law or not. Most are no strangers to fighting and dissent, but more than anything, they want to spend their lives flying under the radar without control or interference from the system’s central government, The Political and Capital Administration of the Advanced Worlds, aka, the Admin. But the Admin's greed-drenched dualism of power and corruption has other plans, and throughout the series, Aly and her crew are reminded of one lesson time and again: when all other options run out, never let go of your gun. INCLUDES BONUS PREQUEL NOVELLA: CONVICTION TRUSTING OTHERS IS YOUR FIRST MISTAKE. If Tech Sergeant Erikson plans to survive another day, she’ll have to give up everything: her identity, her rank, her beloved Corps, and most of all, her so-called honor. Haunted by the ghosts of outclassed and outgunned rebels her squad was ordered to eliminate, Erikson struggles to maintain her military bearing—until even that is ripped away in an act of domestic terrorism that sends her on the run on a hostile planet. Her turn to be outclassed and outgunned, under attack from the scavengers who plague the system, and out of options, she and two more Corps survivors must find a way to trust each other or their chances for survival are less than zero. And for one of them, chances can be improved with one simple act: betrayal. In this prequel to the popular Spectras Arise Trilogy, readers get an intimate look into the events that led Aly and David Erikson on their path from decorated and dedicated soldiers to black-market arms smugglers, and ultimately, to rebels against the Political and Capital Administration of the Advanced Worlds. White Mars Or The Mind Set Free Book Excerpt:

WHITE MARS is Brian Aldiss' Utopian vision of Mankind's future in space, written in collaboration with distinguished physicist Roger Penreose. Halfway through the next century, an organisation called EUPACUS, consisting of all the leading industrialised nations, has found a way to colonise Mars. They have, however, decided to protect the planet for scientific research. Human beings will live in great, self-perpetuating domes, producing their own food and oxygen, while drawing water from the planet's core. The option of terraforming the planet, bombarding it with CFCs in order to give it an atmosphere, has been discontinued. Owing to economic collapse on earth the martian colony is cut off from the mother planet ('Downstairs' as they call it). The head of the colony, Tim Jefferies, sets out to create a perfect society. Some, however, only want to get home, and think that the Utopian ideals (which are all broadcast back to Earth) will only hamper their rescue. An arresting novel of ideals and conflicts WHITE MARS contrasts the warmth of community in the domes with the icy wastes of Mars.

Empire and Film Book Excerpt:

'This important new volume reconstructs the forms of production, distribution and exhibition of films made in and about the colonies. It then ties them to wider theoretical issues about film and liberalism, spectacle and political economy, representation and rule. The result is one of the first volumes to examine how imperial rule is intimately tied to the emergence of documentary as a form and, indeed, how the history of cinema is at the same time the history of Empire.' BRIAN LARKIN, Barnard College 'This superb collection of new scholarship shows how cinema both communicated and aided the imperialist agenda throughout the twentieth century. In doing so, it shows film can be understood as one of the tools of empire, as much as the technology of weaponry or modes of administration: a means of education and indoctrination in the colonies and at home.' TOM GUNNING, University of Chicago At its height in 1919, the British Empire claimed 58 countries, 400 million subjects, and 14 million square miles of ground. Empire and Film brings together leading international scholars to examine the integral role cinema played in the control, organisation, and governance of this diverse geopolitical space. The essays reveal the complex interplay between the political and economic control essential to imperialism and the emergence and development of cinema in the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. Contributors address how the production, distribution and exhibition of film were utilised by state and industrial and philanthropic institutions to shape the subject positions of coloniser and colonised; to demarcate between 'civilised' and 'primitive' and codify difference; and to foster a political economy of imperialism that was predicated on distinctions between core and periphery. The generic forms of colonial cinema were, consequently, varied: travelogues mapped colonial spaces; actuality films re-presented spectacles of royal authority and imperial conquest and conflict; home movies rendered colonial self-representation; state-financed newsreels and documentaries fostered political and economic control and the 'education' of British and colonial subjects; philanthropic and industrial organisations sponsored films to expand Western models of capitalism; British and American film companies made films of imperial adventure. These films circulated widely in Britain and the empire, and were sustained through the establishment of imperial networks of distribution and exhibition, including in particular innovative mobile exhibition circuits and non-theatrical spaces like schools, museums and civic centres. Empire and Film is a significant revision to the historical and conceptual frameworks of British cinema history, and is a major contribution to the history of cinema as a global form that emerged amid, and in dialogue with, the global flows of imperialism. The book is produced in conjunction with a major website housing freely available digitised archival films and materials relating to British colonial cinema, www.colonialfilm.org.uk, and a companion volume entitled Film and the End of Empire.
