Mathematics and Tools for Financial Engineering Book Excerpt:

This book presents an overview of fundamental concepts in mathematics and how they are applied to basic financial engineering problems, with the goal of teaching students to use mathematics and engineering tools to understand and solve financial problems. Part I covers mathematical preliminaries (set theory, linear algebra, sequences and series, real functions and analysis, numerical approximations and computations, basic optimization theory, and stochastic processes), and Part II addresses financial topics ranging from low- to high-risk investments (interest rates and value of money, bonds, dynamic asset modeling, portfolio theory and optimization, option pricing, and the concept of hedging). Based on lectures for a master’s program in financial engineering given by the author over 12 years at the University of Southern California, Mathematics and Tools for Financial Engineering contains numerous examples and problems, establishes a strong general mathematics background and engineering modeling techniques in a pedagogical fashion, and covers numerical techniques with applications to solving financial problems using different software tools. This textbook is intended for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in finance or financial engineering and is useful to readers with no prior knowledge in finance who want to understand some basic mathematical tools and theories associated with financial engineering. It is also appropriate as an overview of many mathematical concepts and engineering tools relevant to courses on numerical analysis, modeling and data science, numerical optimization, and approximation theory.

Green Keynesianism and the Global Financial Crisis Book Excerpt:

It is widely accepted that limiting climate change to 2°C will require substantial and sustained investments in low-carbon technologies and infrastructure. However, the dominance of market fundamentalism in economic thinking for the past three decades has meant that governments have generally viewed large spending programs as politically undesirable. In this context, the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) represented a huge opportunity for proponents of public investment in environmental projects or "Green Keynesianism". This book examines the experience of Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, and the United States with Green Keynesian stimulus programs in the wake of the GFC. Unfortunately, on the whole, the cases do not provide much optimism for proponents of Green Keynesianism. Much less funding than was originally allocated to green programs was actually spent in areas that would produce an environmental benefit. Furthermore, a number of projects had negligible or even detrimental environmental outcomes. While the book also documents several success stories, the research indicates overall that more careful consideration of the design of green stimulus programs is needed. In addition to concrete policy advice, the book provides a broader vision for how governments could use Keynesian policies to work toward creating an "ecological state". This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental politics, environmental economics, political economy, and sustainable development.

Financial Engineering in Sustainable Funding of Urban Development in the EU Book Excerpt:

This theoretically rooted and research-based book provides insights on the JESSICA funding model which – unlike the traditional non-repayable aid – focuses on supporting sustainable urban development projects in a repayable and recyclable way. Looking through the lens of the JESSICA financial engineering mechanism used in urban transformation, it examines the functioning and performance thereof and formulates policy recommendations for the future. The aim of this volume is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the JESSICA sustainable funding model by exploring its repayable assistance mechanism to support sustainable urban development projects. The authors make several noteworthy contributions to the literature on EU cohesion policy and shed light on the use of the repayable instruments within public interventions, while providing, for the first time, a critical analysis of the JESSICA sustainable funding model from the holistic perspective which is especially relevant for supporting sustainable urban development. Financial Engineering in Sustainable Funding of Urban Development in the EU provides policy-significant findings that are important for EU cohesion policy in the field of repayable assistance to be reinvested in the long term in urban and regional transformation.

The winners are divided into a number of tiers (or divisions), with each tier being rewarded differently. All the losers are penalised (which can be equally or differently). In order to study the various properties of the generalised lotto-type competitive learning, a set of equations, which governs its operations, is formulated. This is then used to analyse the stability and other dynamic properties of the generalised lotto-type competitive learning.

Handbooks in Operations Research and Management Science Financial Engineering Book Excerpt:

The remarkable growth of financial markets over the past decades has been accompanied by an equally remarkable explosion in financial engineering, the interdisciplinary field focusing on applications of mathematical and statistical modeling and computational technology to problems in the financial services industry. The goals of financial engineering research are to develop empirically realistic stochastic models describing dynamics of financial risk variables, such as asset prices, foreign exchange rates, and interest rates, and to develop analytical, computational and statistical methods and tools to implement the models and employ them to design and evaluate financial products and processes to manage risk and to meet financial goals. This handbook describes the latest developments in this rapidly evolving field in the areas of modeling and pricing financial derivatives, building models of interest rates and credit risk, pricing and hedging in incomplete markets, risk management, and portfolio optimization. Leading researchers in each of these areas provide their perspective on the state of the art in terms of analysis, computation, and practical relevance. The authors describe essential results to date, fundamental methods and tools, as well as new views of the existing literature, opportunities, and challenges for future research.

Practical Applications of Evolutionary Computation to Financial Engineering Book Excerpt:

“Practical Applications of Evolutionary Computation to Financial Engineering” presents the state of the art techniques in Financial Engineering using recent results in Machine Learning and Evolutionary Computation. This book bridges the gap between academics in computer science and traders and explains the basic ideas of the proposed systems and the financial problems in ways that can be understood by readers without previous knowledge on either of the fields. To cement the ideas discussed in the book, software packages are offered that implement the systems described within. The book is structured so that each chapter can be read independently from the others. Chapters 1 and 2 describe evolutionary computation. The third chapter is an introduction to financial engineering problems for readers who are unfamiliar with this area. The following chapters each deal, in turn, with a different problem in the financial engineering field describing each problem in detail and focusing on solutions based on evolutionary computation. Finally, the two appendixes describe software packages that implement the solutions discussed in this book, including installation manuals and parameter explanations.

This book addresses the question of how to measure financial risk associated with investments in the following infrastructure: electricity generation, power transmission, and water storage, treatment, and distribution systems. Integrating material from business, engineering, economics, demography, probability theory, computer simulation, and policy studies, Jones explores the application of risk analysis to construction projects, rate-setting and price effects, and customer characteristics. The clearly written study is organized around risk factors affecting costs and revenues, while the presentation supports a practical analysis with spreadsheet and simulation examples.

Model Risk in Financial Markets Book Excerpt:

The financial systems in most developed countries today build up a large amount of model risk on a daily basis. However, this is not particularly visible as the financial risk management agenda is still dominated by the subprime-liquidity crisis, the sovereign crises, and other major political events. Losses caused by model risk are hard to identify and even when they are internally identified, as such, they are most likely to be classified as normal losses due to market evolution. Model Risk in Financial Markets: From Financial Engineering to Risk Management seeks to change the current perspective on model innovation, implementation and validation. This book presents a wide perspective on model risk related to financial markets, running the gamut from financial engineering to risk management, from financial mathematics to financial statistics. It combines theory and practice, both the classical and modern concepts being introduced for financial modelling. Quantitative finance is a relatively new area of research and much has been written on various directions of research and industry applications. In this book the reader gradually learns to develop a critical view on the fundamental theories and new models being proposed.
