Description : First and Second Samuel tell the story of the beginnings of monarchy in ancient Israel. These two powerful narratives present many great figures of biblical history 'Samuel, Saul, and David 'and explore the complex interaction of historical developments and human fidelity under God. In the books of Samuel, characters interact to influence and persuade, to express motivation and desire, and to shape the reader's understanding of the issues that faced the Israelites as they responded to God's invitation to covenant. Through the medium of story, the reader shares in the perennial struggle to discover, in the midst of personal and political conflict, God's ways for humanity.

Description : In this new addition to the Old Testament Library series, Graeme Auld writes, "This book is about David." The author demonstrates how all the other personalities in First and Second Samuel--including Samuel, for whom the books were named--are present so that we may see and know David better. These fascinating stories detail the lives of David, his predecessors, and their families. Auld explains that though we read these books from beginning to end, we need to understand that they were composed from end to beginning. By reconstructing what mus thave gone before, the story of David sets up and explains the succeeding story of monarchy in Israel.

Description : The books of First and Second Samuel record Israel's transformation from a loosely affiliated group of tribes into a unified nation under kingly rule.In First Samuel, Saul, Israel's first king, is anointed to rule by Samuel the profit-but it soon becomes clear that Saul is unfit for that role. So God instructs Samuel to anoint a shepherd boy named David as the next King. Soon thereafter, the young man takes on a nine-foot Philistine warrior named Goliath and defeats him not with a sword but with a slingshot, a stone...and an unshakable faith in the living God. Second Samuel covers David's 40-year reign as Israel's second king and highlights his exploits in battle, compassion for the downtrodden and immense popularity among the people. But the book also tells of his moral failure with Bathsheba and the devastating effects of his disobedience within his own family.Through it all, God promise to David remains - the Lord will establish his throne forever. And sure enough, one thousand years later, David's descendent, Jesus himself, enters the world as the divine fulfillment of that prediction.

Description : The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliography contains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

Description : My name is Dr. Pearlie Braswell-Tripp, Ph.D. I do not claim to be an expert in religion, psychology, or counseling, but experience has taught me a lot about all three. 2 Timothy, 2:15 says: “study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth.” I was born in 1943 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina into a Christian family. My family was attending the Rock of Ages Holiness Church. My mother, Sister Mary Jones-Braswell played the guitar; my sister, Christine Braswell played the piano and the rest of the family sang. There were seven of us girls. My sisters; Frances, Christine, Doretha, Verna, Margaree and Mary Lee were older. We were known as the Braswell sisters. My father was Lee Braswell, the most handsome man in town. I will never forget the great times we had in Rocky Mount, nor will I forget the great Rock of Ages Holiness Church. Our church was two blocks away from our home. That meant we had no real reason not to go. Many of my other relatives attended Rock of Ages also. My mother’s parents attended and so did her brother and his family. Those were what we now call “The good ole days.” I really loved those days. We traveled around singing the gospel until we left home for New York City in 1961. We were rooted and grounded in religion.
