Description : “For The Record: The Best In The Music Business Tell It Like It Is” is the ultimate compendium of insights and wisdom covering every aspect of today’s music business — from the fundamentals of songwriting to the cutting edge of marketing and digital distribution — direct from the mouths of the artists, executives and entrepreneurs who walk the walk. The book contains a foreword by Roger Brown (President, Berklee College of Music) and exclusive one-on-one conversations with Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees (in one of the last interviews before his untimely passing), Kelly Rowland, Wyclef Jean, Ali Campbell of UB40 and executives such as Julie Greenwald (Chairman/COO, Atlantic Records) and John Paul DeJoria, the co-founder of Patrón Tequila and Paul Mitchell.

Description : Record albums came in plain brown wrappers until 1938, when 23-year-old Alex Steinweiss conceived of luring the record-buying public with a visually appealing cover. His idea revolutionized the record business, of course, and created a whole new area of design. Steinweiss's own album covers were mini-posters, with eye-catching graphics, vivid colours, and playful typography. This chunky volume (appropriately 45-rpm-record-size) is an illustrated history of the genre, from the 1930s to the 1960s-a must-have for music lovers.

Description : Anjali Arondekar considers the relationship between sexuality and the colonial archive by posing the following questions: Why does sexuality (still) seek its truth in the historical archive? What are the spatial and temporal logics that compel such a return? And conversely, what kind of “archive” does such a recuperative hermeneutics produce? Rather than render sexuality’s relationship to the colonial archive through the preferred lens of historical invisibility (which would presume that there is something about sexuality that is lost or silent and needs to “come out”), Arondekar engages sexuality’s recursive traces within the colonial archive against and through our very desire for access. The logic and the interpretive resources of For the Record arise out of two entangled and minoritized historiographies: one in South Asian studies and the other in queer/sexuality studies. Focusing on late colonial India, Arondekar examines the spectacularization of sexuality in anthropology, law, literature, and pornography from 1843 until 1920. By turning to materials and/or locations that are familiar to most scholars of queer and subaltern studies, Arondekar considers sexuality at the center of the colonial archive rather than at its margins. Each chapter addresses a form of archival loss, troped either in a language of disappearance or paucity, simulacrum or detritus: from Richard Burton’s missing report on male brothels in Karáchi (1845) to a failed sodomy prosecution in Northern India, Queen Empress v. Khairati (1884), and from the ubiquitous India-rubber dildos found in colonial pornography of the mid-to-late nineteenth century to the archival detritus of Kipling’s stories about the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

Description : When Marjorie Hill graduated in 1920 as Canada’s "first girl architect," she was entering a profession that had been established in Canada just 30 years earlier. For the Record, the first history of women architects in Canada, provides a fascinating introduction to early women architects, presented within the context of developments in both Europe and North America. Profiles of the women who graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Toronto between 1920 and 1960 are illustrated with photographs of their work and include archival material that has never before been published. The final chapter on contemporary women in architecture showcases contributions by leading women architects across the country, from Halifax to Vancouver to Iqaluit. For the Record also provides current information on schools of architecture in Canada and includes a list of other resources to encourage young women who are thinking of pursuing careers in architecture.

Description : This book tells the story of how three young men made themselves into one of the most popular bands in the world, and how their distinctive sound has come to influence a whole new generation of guitar groups and define a musical genre. One of the world's greatest exponents of punk rock, Green Day have spent more than twenty-five years taking their blistering punk rock around the world; in doing so they have sold an incredible 65 million albums. This book draws upon the memories of a host of band associates, including Larry Livermore, the founder of Lookout Records and former band mate of Tre Cool, who was an important figure during the band's early days, and John Lucasey, the owner of Studio 880 where the band recorded their classic 'American Idiot' album, who provides the background to that best selling record. Also featured is a track by track analysis of every official Green Day release to 'Bullet in a Bible'. This completely independent critical review leaves no stone unturned as it explores the Green Day legend. This is the essential companion for every Green Day fan on the planet.

Description : This fascinating book chronicles the making of the new record industry, from the boom years of the CD revolution of the late 1980s to the crisis of the present day, with particular stress on the last decade. It follows the actions and reactions of the major international record companies - five at the beginning of the story, now four - as they plowed their way through the digital slough of despond, bewildered by the fleet-of-foot digital innovators far more responsive to the changing marketing conditions through which recorded music was consumed and valued. These all have their significant place in Download but the real story is the structural change that has, almost surreptitiously, taken place within the music business. This change, for reasons author Phil Hardy will explain in detail, has left the captains of the record industry as unable to act as they were unwilling to act. In effect they became little but very well paid observers of the shrinking of their domains.
