Furiously Happy Book Excerpt:

#1 New York Times Bestseller In Furiously Happy, a humor memoir tinged with just enough tragedy and pathos to make it worthwhile, Jenny Lawson examines her own experience with severe depression and a host of other conditions, and explains how it has led her to live life to the fullest: "I've often thought that people with severe depression have developed such a well for experiencing extreme emotion that they might be able to experience extreme joy in a way that ‘normal people' also might never understand. And that's what Furiously Happy is all about." Jenny’s readings are standing room only, with fans lining up to have Jenny sign their bottles of Xanax or Prozac as often as they are to have her sign their books. Furiously Happy appeals to Jenny's core fan base but also transcends it. There are so many people out there struggling with depression and mental illness, either themselves or someone in their family—and in Furiously Happy they will find a member of their tribe offering up an uplifting message (via a taxidermied roadkill raccoon). Let's Pretend This Never Happened ostensibly was about embracing your own weirdness, but deep down it was about family. Furiously Happy is about depression and mental illness, but deep down it's about joy—and who doesn't want a bit more of that?

Furiously Happy Book Excerpt:

In Furiously Happy, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jenny Lawson explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea. But terrible ideas are what Jenny does best. As Jenny says: "Some people might think that being 'furiously happy' is just an excuse to be stupid and irresponsible and invite a herd of kangaroos over to your house without telling your husband first because you suspect he would say no since he's never particularly liked kangaroos. And that would be ridiculous because no one would invite a herd of kangaroos into their house. Two is the limit. I speak from personal experience. My husband says that none is the new limit. I say he should have been clearer about that before I rented all those kangaroos. "Most of my favorite people are dangerously fucked-up but you'd never guess because we've learned to bare it so honestly that it becomes the new normal. Like John Hughes wrote in The Breakfast Club, 'We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it.' Except go back and cross out the word 'hiding.'" Furiously Happy is about "taking those moments when things are fine and making them amazing, because those moments are what make us who we are, and they're the same moments we take into battle with us when our brains declare war on our very existence. It's the difference between "surviving life" and "living life". It's the difference between "taking a shower" and "teaching your monkey butler how to shampoo your hair." It's the difference between being "sane" and being "furiously happy." Lawson is beloved around the world for her inimitable humor and honesty, and in Furiously Happy, she is at her snort-inducing funniest. This is a book about embracing everything that makes us who we are - the beautiful and the flawed - and then using it to find joy in fantastic and outrageous ways. Because as Jenny's mom says, "Maybe 'crazy' isn't so bad after all." Sometimes crazy is just right.

This Muddled In between Book Excerpt:

"This thesis is an exploratory case study of innovative techniques used in three contemporary women's mental health memoirs: Dear Friend, from My Life I Write to You in Your Life by Yiyun Li (2017); Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson (2015); and My Depression: A Picture Book by Elizabeth Swados (2005). Using a critical lens informed by feminist disability theories, cognitive studies, and the concepts of self-performativity and liminality, this work seeks to answer two questions: 1) how do selected recent mental health memoirs creatively push the boundaries of this subgenre, and 2) how are such texts important in a larger sociocultural context? Breaking from genre expectations, these narratives provide new avenues for creative self-expression and identity construction. They furthermore offer more meaningful and empowering narratives to counteract harmful stereotypes projected by popular media such as Thirteen Reasons Why."--Abstract.

Priestdaddy Book Excerpt:

NEW STATESMAN AND OBSERVER BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2017 'Destined to be a classic . . . this year's must-read memoir' Mary Karr, author of The Liars' Club 'Irrepressible . . . joyous, funny and filthy . . . Lockwood blows the roof off every paragraph' Joe Dunthorne, author of Submarine The childhood of Patricia Lockwood, the poet dubbed' The Smutty-Metaphor Queen of Lawrence, Kansas' by The New York Times, was unusual in many respects. There was the location: an impoverished, nuclear waste-riddled area of the American Midwest. There was her mother, a woman who speaks almost entirely in strange riddles and warnings of impending danger. Above all, there was her gun-toting, guitar-riffing, frequently semi-naked father, who underwent a religious conversion on a submarine and found a loophole which saw him approved for the Catholic priesthood by the future Pope Benedict XVI, despite already having a wife and children. When an unexpected crisis forces Lockwood and her husband to move back into her parents' rectory, she must learn to live again with the family's simmering madness, and to reckon with the dark side of her religious upbringing. Pivoting from the raunchy to the sublime, from the comic to the serious, Priestdaddy is an unforgettable story of how we balance tradition against hard-won identity - and of how, having journeyed in the underworld, we can emerge with our levity and our sense of justice intact. 'Beautiful, funny and poignant. I wish I'd written this book' Jenny Lawson, author of Furiously Happy 'A revelatory debut . . . Lockwood's prose is nothing short of ecstatic . . . her portrait of her epically eccentric family is funny, warm, and stuffed to bursting with emotional insight' Joss Whedon 'Praise God, this is why books were invented' Emily Berry, author of Dear Boy and Stranger, Baby

Up Until Now Book Excerpt:

A collection of poems. Really. That's it. That’s all it is. Some are sad. Some are happy. Some are funny. Most are personal. It's a short book of a few poems that I decided to share with the world. If for some reason that explanation is not adequate enough, well, here you go: One cold and stormy and cliché night, after I had written poems for several years or so, I furiously flung them into a fireplace in a fretful, angst-ridden rage. No fire family brigade was at hand to try to rescue them, either. I stood by the fiery flames of that fire, a bottle of rum in one hand and empty in the other, laughing and weeping maniacally until the sun came up. Quite unexpectedly, a few of the poems survived. How they did it is still a mystery. But I felt that there was meaning as to why they endured their peril. That they were not to be used as mere characters in a facetious and farcical book description, but that they had a purpose, something to live for and to share with others. And I knew, deep in my wretched soul, that they had to be handled with the love and care that only an honest and true poet could muster… So I jammed the suckers together into a little book and slapped a cheap price tag on it, just for ya’ll! The poetry you'll find here is mercurial. It’ll switch from a joyful love poem and witty three-liner to a depressing poem about guilt and death and all that nasty stuff. It’s the only way for the collection to be authentic, as I, myself, am a rather mercurial person. Heavy, silvery, 88. You know. And despite being a privileged, middle-class, Colorado raised spoiled brat, I’ve had a rather tough life. Beyond even my ADHD and anxiety disorders and depression that I'm going to shamelessly exploit, you'll find some twisted stuff here. Both receiving and aggrieving. Several suicide attempts. A noxious and loathsome attitude towards life. Of course, coarse language and pretentious puns. And, best of all, a rotten rap sheet of heinous behavior. It’s all par for the course for a contrite and sullen writing style like mine. But don't worry, if you were at all worried. You will find some nice stuff too. You'll find a person who is full of wonder and hope and love. Someone with a big heart, who sees the complex and best in people. Someone who actively questions the crowd to find authenticity and true answers. Someone who tries to be facetious just to lighten the mood of the world a bit. Someone who has stood up for what he believes in and helped those in need. Someone who disgustingly strokes their own ego all the time. Which is, essentially, the stuff that makes poetry. Which makes sense. Because this is a collection of poems. And that’s all it really is. So, there you go. A vague yet adequate description of this book and its author. One that either entices you to read the book… or repels you far away. For those of you who buy this, I deeply appreciate you doing so. And for those of you who somehow, by some miracle, enjoy even a fraction of these poems, please share that love with others so they can enjoy it too. Thanks.
