Description : Who is God, and how do we know what he’s like? In twenty short chapters that cover a wide range of subjects, best-selling authors Fr. Benedict Groeschel and Bert Ghezzi alert us to the many-faceted ways we can learn about God through the daily circumstances of our lives. The face of God is unveiled by Groeschel and Ghezzi in engaging stories about forgiveness, kindness, conversion, and family, taken from personal experience, Scripture, literature, and the lives of ordinary people. In this unique book, the authors open our eyes to the Lord’s attributes —his love, his providence, his generosity, his justice, his creativity, and his preoccupation with beauty, and more—by discovering them in places as varied as the vastness of the heavens, the intricacies of our bodies, the genius of artists, and the love and care of our parents. Questions for personal reflection and group discussion will help readers to look for God themselves each day, as they learn to see him in fresh, new ways.

Description : 'Women Encounter God' is one of the first books to explore the commonalities and convergences of women's theologies in the Americas. This critical, comparative analysis of white feminist, womanist, and 'mujerista' theologies focuses on how, by placing their unique theologies in dialogue, the rich contributions of each theology can inform the others. By looking at the key themes of empowerment, embodiment, and relationality, Moody examines how three different types of feminist theologians perceive God. She discusses the works of such representative theologians as white feminists Mary Daly, Rosemary Ruether, Sally McFague, and Carter Heyward; Hispanic/Latina theologians Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz, Yolanda Tarango, and Elsa Tamez; and womanist theologians Delores Williams, Jacquelyn Grant, and Katie Geneva Cannon, as well as feminist theorists Chela Sandoval and Rosemary Tong.

Description : “THIS BOOK is an attempt to fill the present striking need for an introduction to contemporary linguistic philosophy as it bears on theological discourse. Wherever I have gone, recently, among educated Christians in Britain and America, I have encountered profound curiosity—and a good deal of anxiety—concerning modern methods in philosophy as they relate to the logical nature and validity of theological affirmations. Similarly I have found many of my students in contemporary philosophy and in the philosophy of religion becoming deeply absorbed in the issues raised by a critical examination of theological speech. From both groups, the intellectually alert Christians and the thoughtful graduate and undergraduate students of philosophy and religion, I have been heavily bombarded with appeals for direction to some book which would (1) set forth the central issues and arguments concerning theological discourse for readers who have familiarity with traditional philosophy but who are relatively untrained in contemporary philosophical practices and (2) place into perspective the present state of philosophical and theological discussion in this area of burgeoning interest. To my frustration, I have had to answer such requests with the admission that no such book exists and with the promise that I would try, some day, to provide that book myself. In preparing this volume, therefore, I have done my best to keep those promises in mind.”

Description : Each of the figures examined in this study”John Dee, John Donne, Sir Kenelm Digby, Henry and Thomas Vaughan, and Jane Lead”is concerned with the ways in which God can be approached or experienced. Michael Martin analyzes the ways in which the encounter with God is figured among these early modern writers who inhabit the shared cultural space of poets and preachers, mystics and scientists. The three main themes that inform this study are Cura animarum, the care of souls, and the diminished role of spiritual direction in post-Reformation religious life; the rise of scientific rationality; and the struggle against the disappearance of the Holy. Arising from the methods and commitments of phenomenology, the primary mode of inquiry of this study resides in contemplation, not in a religious sense, but in the realm of perception, attendance, and acceptance. Martin portrays figures such as Dee, Digby, and Thomas Vaughan not as the eccentrics they are often depicted to have been, but rather as participating in a religious mainstream that had been radically altered by the disappearance of any kind of mandatory or regular spiritual direction, a problem which was further complicated and exacerbated by the rise of science. Thus this study contributes to a reconfiguration of our notion of what ’religious orthodoxy’ really meant during the period, and calls into question our own assumptions about what is (or was) ’orthodox’ and ’heterodox.’

Description : How well do you know His story? By the time a Christian reaches young adulthood, he is likely to be quite familiar with every major story in the Bible, but not from having studied them in any particular order. Ask an average Bible student to arrange certain characters and events chronologically, and the results are telling. Telling God’s Story looks closely at the Bible from its beginning in Genesis to its conclusion in Revelation. By approaching Scripture as one purposefully flowing narrative, emphasizing the inter-connectedness of the text, veteran college professors Preben Vang and Terry G. Carter reinforce the Bible’s greatest teachings and help readers in their own ability to share God’s story effectively with others. Ideal for classroom settings, this second edition of Telling God's Story now features all supporting charts, photographs, and illustrations in full color!

Description : Is what we call "the encounter with God" merely a depth experience of the psyche or does it have a specific theological character? In this revised edition of his best selling book, William Barry shows how it it possible to understand an encounter with the Triune God in this world, and how that process can be interpreted and aided by a spiritual director. Using the insights of John Macmurray and John Smith, Barry describes how a relationship with God develops and how one can discern whether a particular experience is from God or not. This understanding of religious experience comes from a theology of community, communal discernment and ministry in the church. This book will be helpful to spiritual directors, educators and theologians, as well as all educated seekers desiring a deeper relationship with God. In this revised edition, the author has added reflections on God's presence to suffering and evil and to evildoers, updated the bibliography, and freshened his examples for the 21st-century reader.

Description : By rediscovering the true personality of the Self-revealed God, we will be able to understand the great mysteries of the universe that have baffled us for millennia. These include the suffering of the blameless, the persistence of evil in the world, the atoning power of blood sacrifice, the prosperity of the wicked, the necessity of a new birth or translation of time to eternity, the destiny of martyrdom for some of the chosen people, and why Yahweh remains the hidden God. Close Encounters With God presents a study of multiple close encounters with Yahweh, the name of God in Hebrew Scripture. These encounters will enable us to have a clearer portrayal of the Self-revealed God, one who is different from the conceptualized deity envisioned through transcendental meditation, vision quest or mystical rapture. This book is an invitation to acknowledge the revelation of His own person by God Himself, in multiple close encounters with mortal men and women in our sacred Scriptures, as opposed to his conceptualization by human intuition or imagination.

Description : Engaging with four English poems or groups of poems-the anonymous medieval Crucifixion lyrics; William Langland's Piers Plowman, John Donne's Divine Poems, and John Milton's Paradise Lost-this book examines the nature of poetic encounter with God. At the same time, the author makes original contributions to the discussion of critical dilemmas in the study of each poem or group of poems. The main linguistic focus of this book is on the nature of dialogue with God in religious poetry, an area much neglected by grammarians and often overlooked in studies of literary style. It constitutes an important contribution to our understanding of the relationship between literature and theology.

Description : The pastoral counselor brings God's presence to the counseling session. The counselor radiates God's enormous unconditional love and forgiveness to the client. Clients come in because they are spiritually broken and prey to the allies of darkness-fear of abandonment from God and those they love, resentment, frustration, anxiety, and callousness. He is the prodigal son. Through empathy, compassion, and counseling skills, the pastoral counsel connects them to the God who runs to meet him with joy, throws his arms around him, kisses him, forgives him, and makes him psychologically and spiritually whole again by giving him the signet ring. The pastoral counselor's role is to facilitate this occurrence.

Through experiential encounters with our loving God, we gain intimate knowledge of how much he really cares about every detail of our lives. As we seek to know him in a more personal and meaningful way, we discover that he is beside us in every situation, which changes us forever. As humans, we tend to learn more from our failures than from our successes. God uses our failures as well as our successes to help us grow spiritually. We grow and develop spiritually in the same way we grow and develop physicallyboth are processes that occur over time. This is the story of one persons gradual experiential realization that what God says in his Word is true, that it is applicable to our current situations, and that he is intimately involved in every aspect of our lives.
