Is contemporary art a friend or foe of Christianity? Art historian, critic, and curator Daniel Siedell, addresses this question and presents a framework for interpreting art from a Christian worldview in God in the Gallery: A Christian Embrace of Modern Art. As such, it is an excellent companion to Francis Schaeffer's classic Art and the Bible. Divided into three parts--"Theology," "History," and "Practice"--God in the Gallery demonstrates that art is in conversation with and not opposed to the Christian faith. In addition, this book is beautifully enhanced with images from such artists as Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Enrique Martínez Celaya, and others. Readers of this book will include professors, students, artists, and anyone interested in Christianity and culture.

When our Father of Faith is tempted to sacrifice his sense of humor on the Altar of God's Demands, God intervenes in a surprising way that really makes Abe laugh. This is the same God whose hungry servant, Elijah, is fed by ravens way out on the ragged edge and towards whom Moses manages a sidewise glance while on the lookout for greener pastures. Then along comes another tough act to follow--the Wild Man of Judea appearing in the Galilee Theater and baptizing Jesus of Nazareth in the Jordan River of God's Transforming Power and Hope. Then, in the very next scene, JŽsus ben Dios, the Number One Draft Choice in all of Baseball, hops a trial-ways bus to intensive-training camp where he comes face to face with the temptations and adversities of the real world. Fortunately, JŽsus has his Spring Training Manual handy for quick reference. Jesus then launches his teaching and healing career in many forms: as a dance instructor, farmer, chef--and even as a flamboyant pyromaniac-arsonist who comes not to bring peace to the world but to set it on fire. For who can forget Marshal Jesus out along the Border of Sin and Forgiveness encountering the Ten Men-yon? Or the homefolks' chant, Dr. Jesus, he's our man! If we can't use him, nobody can!? Because when Anglo-Catholic Father Jesus meets an average parishioner at the Holy Water Basin and asks her to bless him with it, their engaging conversation prompts students of the bible and pillars of the church to take a second look in order to watch ordinary altar candles suddenly take on more beauty and meaning than they have ever imagined before. So, for those who have eyes to see: Look!

In this day and age, when art has become more of a commodity and art school graduates are convinced that they can only make a living from their work by attaining gallery representation, it is more important than ever to show the reality of how a professional, contemporary artist sustains a creative practice over time. The 40 essays collected here in Living and Sustaining a Creative Life are written in the artists’ own voices and take the form of narratives, statements and interviews. Each story is different and unique, but the common thread is an ongoing commitment to creativity, inside and outside the studio. Both day-to-day and Big Picture details are revealed, showing how it is possible to sustain a creative practice that contributes to the ongoing dialogue in contemporary art. These stories will inform and inspire any student, young artist and art enthusiast, and will help redefine what ‘success’ means to a professional artist.

Granted that God may exist, how may God be defined in our time? Addressing this issue Benjamin Farley explores a variety of belief systems, Western and Eastern, religious and skeptical. Taking an approach that is both critical of religion as well as sympathetic, Farley refuses to shy away from hard questions or to dismiss constructive answers that speak to the human condition. He distinguishes human "intellectual ascent" towards God from humankind's "innate and inner sense" to know and relate to the living God, demonstrating the efforts and rewards of both approaches in Christianity, as well as in Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Zen. Alongside these more obviously "religious" approaches, Farley reviews the methodologies and findings of today's greatest scientific minds, including skeptics such as Hawking, Dawkins, and Wilson, as well as their skeptical forerunners of the past. He argues that belief in God can no more ignore the scientific truth about the universe than science can dismiss the spiritual yearnings and hunger of humanity for purpose, meaning, and its inescapable sense of the presence of God.

When you hear the word 'worship', what first springs to mind? For many of us we think of singing songs and hymns with fellow believers in a church service or small group. But worship is more than that. Worship is a way of living. In Worshipping, readers are invited to journey through a series of six studies in David's Psalms, learning from his worship in all of life, from worshipping together to worshipping under pressure, worshipping in failure and in contentment. With contributions from Mark Greene, Antony Billington, Tracy Cotterell, Joe Warton and Pippa James, this practical workbook will help you see whole-life worship in a new way.

As the author read through the oft-repeated, handwritten pages of Ione Davidson, wife of the first Pastor of South Shores Church, handed to her by the church organist, Doris Swanson, she wondered, "Was this church really God's Gift to those who attended or visited?" This, as a reader, you will have to decide for yourself. With the Cole's family involvement in founding and two sons becoming pastors of the church, the author believed it was a worthy project. Her writing began at Los Angeles High School where she composed programs for a literary club and an article winning first place prize for the school annual. At First Baptist in Pomona, she wrote articles for the "Communicator Prayer Corner" and high school lessons for a Sunday school class she was teaching. With her husband, Dr. Edward B. Cole, who served as the senior pastor five churches, they ministered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, San Diego, Pomona (First Baptist Pomona, largest American Baptist Church), Lake Arrowhead (as pastor and "Resident President" of the Campus Crusade's International School of Theology), then South Shores Baptist Church in Monarch Beach, California. During five years there a new parking lot and sanctuary were built. After retiring he was named "Pastor Emeritus." Her employment began at aircraft companies during the Second World War, Douglas Aircraft and Lockheed Aircraft and Budd Manufacturing in Philadelphia. Besides working in Graphic Arts at the California Baptist Seminary, her last position was legal secretary for William Bergman, the City Attorney of Claremont, CA. After supporting her husband through college, seminary and doctrinal classes, she returned to college after her four children were olderand in school. The author believes some of God's greatest gifts have been, not only this special church, but her four children, ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. God's gifts for those who love Him in return seem never-ending!
