Description : Rock climbers have an inherent interest in geology. For some, it's about knowing what gear to use or how to avoid rotten bands of rock. For others, it's about finding the next hot-spot boulder field, or understanding why their local crag exists. For most of them, curiosity about rocks comes as naturally as their desire to climb them. Geology is the fundamental control on the sport, and yet there are no practical guides for the climber interested in rocks. Flakes, Jugs, and Splitters fills the niche. With an informal Q&A format and fun, informative language, it brings the often esoteric science of geology into the hands of rock climbers. Covering topics from how to use a geologic map to finding new crags, from why Europe has the best limestone to how El Capitan's North America Wall got its name, this book has a fact for every climber's ponderings. Top-quality photographs of worldwide destinations and easy-to-read artist's renderings of geologic concepts make it as visually engaging as it is entertaining and edifying.

Description : The stratigraphic concept of a depositional sequence was introduced to the scientific literature by Peter Vail and his colleagues in the late 70s, building on the shoulders of giants like Chamberlain, Sloss and Wheeler. Since then, several papers compared and contrasted the original sequence-stratigraphic school published in the AAPG Memoir 26 in 1977 with other approaches to subdivide the geologic record, as well as, debating the model validity and impact on the community. At its core, the "model" is really a stratigraphic interpretation method, which was never explicitly documented in the literature. The objective of this book is to present the sequence stratigraphic method in its current form in an attempt to clarify its usage and application in diverse geologic data and depositional environments. This publication is the result of more than 3 decades of sequence stratigraphy research and application. The objective is to emphasize the most important aspects of Sequence Stratigraphy-a method to guide geologic interpretation of stratigraphic data (seismic profiles, well-logs, cores and outcrops) across scales (from local to regional and global) and depositional environments (from continental to deep marine). This book in an 11 x 17 format is designed to be easily used for teaching or self-learning experiences. In the second edition of the "Atlas", the book was divided in 2 volumes-Exercises and Solutions-to make it easier to use the publication as text book for sequence stratigraphy courses in universities. Also, a new exercise was added and several of the existing exercises went through major updating and editing.

Description : The basic organisation of this volume follows that of volume 1 (eISBN: 9780813759203). It is divided into two parts. Part 1 is a listing of all figures and tables in the Grand Canyon geological literature, as accumulated since the publication of Volume 1, and is divided into eight subject sections: measured stratigraphic sections; cross-sections; correlation diagrams; maps; data presented in figures and tables; photographs; geologic road logs and Colorado River guides; miscellaneous lists. Part 2 consists of indexes to the guide.

Description : The report consists of preliminary studies for a multidisciplinary program of investigation of the possibility of an electromagnetic wave guide in the lower crust. The studies are: A review of the pertinent geologic literature on possible sites for electromagnetic and seismic field studies; Collection of gravity data for some of the sites, and Preliminary investigation of the use of non-explosive sources for deep reflection profiling and short refraction profiles; and A review of information pertinent to the composition of the continental crust.

Description : Information Sources in Science and Technology: A Practical Guide to Traditional and Online Use presents a selection of traditional and online methods of using information sources in science and technology, including people, organizations, literature, hosts, and databases. This text serves as a reference book that helps the reader choose sources of information and their guides, includes a routine for finding and using information, and offers tips on searching and obtaining literature in a usable form. This book is comprised of nine chapters and begins by explaining how to choose type(s) of information source that is likely to be most helpful. The chapters that follow present guides on people, organizations, and literature as sources of information. A chapter on information services focuses on those organizations that supply information or references to information that could be helpful. These services range from answering telephone queries to supplying collections of relevant documents, and from broadcast television information to direct connection with computer databases. The next chapters discuss ways of searching the literature and computer databases, obtaining literature in a usable form, and organizing and presenting information. This book concludes by considering current awareness or keeping up-to-date with information about recent developments. This monograph is intended for librarians and information officers, especially for those working in scientific or industrial environments, practicing scientists and engineers, and students associated with these professions.

Description : The stratigraphic concept of a depositional sequence was introduced to the scientific literature by Exxon Production Research Company (EPRco) in the late 70s, building on the shoulders of giants like Chamberlain, Sloss and Wheeler. Since then, several papers compared and contrasted the original Exxon (and later, ExxonMobil) sequence/stratigraphic school with other approaches to subdivide the geologic record, as well as, debating the ExxonMobil model validity and impact on the community. At its core, the ExxonMobil geomodel is really a stratigraphic interpretation method, which was never explicitly documented in the literature. The objective of this book is to present the ExxonMobil sequence stratigraphic method in its current form in an attempt to clarify its usage and application in diverse geologic data and depositional environments. This publication is the result of more than 3 decades of Sequence Stratigraphy research and application at EPRco and at the ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company (URC). The objective is to emphasize the most important aspects of Sequence Stratigraphy . a method to guide geologic interpretation of stratigraphic data (seismic profiles, well?]logs, cores and outcrops) across scales (from local to regional and global) and depositional environments (from continental to deep marine). Description : How to Find Out About Patents presents a basic knowledge of patent matters and provides a few facts regarding patent law and procedures. This book provides a description of the literature available for finding out about patents followed by a comprehensive consideration of the techniques used to obtain any desired information from this. Organized into 15 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the procedure and the requirements of obtaining a patent wherein the inventor usually goes to a patent agent who drafts a patent specification and files this at the Patent Office. This text then explains the patent specification, which is the fundamental document of patent literature and is a statement of the nature of the invention. Other chapters consider the main value of the Patent Journal to industry, which is indispensable as a record of any week's activity at the Patent Office. The final chapter deals with the establishment of a patents department in an industrial company's organization. This book is a valuable resource for professional patent agents.
