Guide to the Study and Use of Reference Books Classic Reprint Book Excerpt:

Excerpt from Guide to the Study and Use of Reference Books The third edition of the Guide is based, in the main, upon the second edition, 1908, and the two supplements for 1909-10 and 1911-13, but the many changes in reference books and developments in reference work and teaching since 1908 have necessitated many changes from the earlier edition. In the third edition the general plan and ar rangement of the second edition have been followed and Miss Kroeger's Introduction, familiar to so many classes of library students, has been kept intact except that one section, How to study reference books, has been made slightly more detailed. The lists of reference books, however, have been changed very materially and the annotations have been rewritten and much extended, so that this latter feature of the Guide is prae tically new throughout, only a few annotations having been carried over from the second edition, although somewhat more have been retained from the two Supplements. Aside from the new annotation, the revision of the lists of reference books has consisted principally of (1) excision of older titles and editions now superseded by more recent material, (2) addition of new titles including not only the recent books listed in the two Supplements and later titles through 1916, but also a very considerable number of earlier titles. Principally foreign or more special works not hitherto included in the Guide, and (3) the addition of some entirely new lists, such as those on Constitutions, International law, Romances, Historical source books, English public documents, etc. Among the older lists Which have been greatly augmented are those on Periodical indexes, both General and Special, Foreign dictionaries, Statistics, Author dictionaries, Concordances, Special gazetteers, Place names. In general, information included goes through 1916, and does not cover changes, additions, etc., for 1917. Excerpt from A Reference Guide to the Study of Public Opinion In part, this is due to the inertia of leaders who lean heavily on the tech nique of the past. Guide to the Study of Musical History and Criticism Classic Reprint Book Excerpt:

Excerpt from Guide to the Study of Musical History and Criticism The topics and references contained in the following pages are intended as an aid to those who wish to study musical history and criticism in a systematic and scholar-like manner. The time has gone by when the authority of a single book or a Single author could meet the demands of an intelligent curiosity. In history, litera ture, - every department of research in which the reliance is wholly or partially upon books, it is now taken for granted that the only rational method is the examination of many authorities with the aid of abstracts, topics, references, and similar guides. The scheme of this present manual is to indicate what material exists in English for the study of musical history, and how that material may be used to the greatest advantage. The topics are synopses of lectures given at Oberlin College; but they are also of general utility, for they summarize the most important phases of the subject, and show the student along what lines his inquiry must proceed. The method is to treat the topics as questions, and find the answers in the references. The author has in general, avoided references to books that are difficult to procure. Only those articles in periodicals are cited which deal with subjects that are not so well or concisely covered in any of the books available, or which have a special interest given them by their authorship. How to Study Classic Reprint Book Excerpt:

Excerpt from How to Study The present paper has been suggested by a long experience in teaching, in which the writer has been continually surprised at the ignorance manifested by students in the higher classes of our technical schools and universities, or graduates from such schools, with reference to proper meth ods of study. If his experience is a reliable guide, a large majority of the graduates from such schools, as well as some teachers in them, have not acquired proper habits and methods of study, and have devoted little or no attention to the consideration of the subject, vital though it is. Guide to the Study of Medieval History Book Excerpt:

Excerpt from Guide to the Study of Medieval History: For Students, Teachers, and Libraries Ever since the fall of 1914 the stream of historical writing on the middle ages has become thinner and thinner, so that today it is comparatively easy to keep abreast with the literature on the subject due to the phenomenal decrease of new contributions by European scholars. This sudden lull, preceded by a period of almost feverish activity in book-making, is a peculiarly propitious time for the making of inventories of the wealth of historical literature which has been produced in the century since the close of the Napoleonic wars. Such a task for medieval history is attempted in this Guide. The book has grown out of mimeographed syllabi prepared for two courses offered in the University of California, a general course in medieval history designed especially for juniors, and an advanced course in medieval culture for seniors and graduate students. These two syllabi have furnished the bases for parts 11 and III of this Guide. Part 1, containing the most important general books useful in a study of medieval history, has been added in order to make the manual as complete and comprehensive as is possible within its limits. These general books are referred to constantly in parts II and III by cross references to the black-faced numbers by which they are designated. The table of contents furnishes an analysis of the general books in part I. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Reference Guide to Edmund Spenser Classic Reprint Book Excerpt:

Excerpt from A Reference Guide to Edmund Spenser Many years ago I compiled and caused to be printed a brief Outline Guide to Spenser. It has long been out Of print. Vari ous requests for its reprinting together with a desire to make a more extended contribution to the study Of a great English poet who has long been a delight to me have led me to undertake this book. The apparatus for the study Of the greater English poets has been accumulating for many years, but the present generation especially has seen it rapidly expanded, rounded out, and reduced to order. Handbooks, concordances, bibliographies, annotations, and the whole apparatus criticus, are now reasonably complete for Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, and many Of the later and even Of the minor poets. Spenser has had his Share Of attention. There are various handbooks, there is now an excellent concord ance, he has been especially fortunate in the body Of appreciative criticism which the lovers Of his genius have written, and the body Of annotations Of his learned Muse is copious although defective in parts. But there is lacking a comprehensive reference-list or bibliographical guide to his writings and the writings about him. This lack I am here endeavoring to supply.
