Description : In The Apocalypse of Empire, Stephen J. Shoemaker argues that earliest Islam was a movement driven by urgent eschatological belief that focused on the conquest, or liberation, of the biblical Holy Land and situates this belief within a broader cultural environment of apocalyptic anticipation. Shoemaker looks to the Qur'an's fervent representation of the imminent end of the world and the importance Muhammad and his earliest followers placed on imperial expansion. Offering important contemporary context for the imperial eschatology that seems to have fueled the rise of Islam, he surveys the political eschatologies of early Byzantine Christianity, Judaism, and Sasanian Zoroastrianism at the advent of Islam and argues that they often relate imperial ambition to beliefs about the end of the world. Moreover, he contends, formative Islam's embrace of this broader religious trend of Mediterranean late antiquity provides invaluable evidence for understanding the beginnings of the religion at a time when sources are generally scarce and often highly problematic. Scholarship on apocalyptic literature in early Judaism and Christianity frequently maintains that the genre is decidedly anti-imperial in its very nature. While it may be that early Jewish apocalyptic literature frequently displays this tendency, Shoemaker demonstrates that this quality is not characteristic of apocalypticism at all times and in all places. In the late antique Mediterranean as in the European Middle Ages, apocalypticism was regularly associated with ideas of imperial expansion and triumph, which expected the culmination of history to arrive through the universal dominion of a divinely chosen world empire. This imperial apocalypticism not only affords an invaluable backdrop for understanding the rise of Islam but also reveals an important transition within the history of Western doctrine during late antiquity.

Description : We have almost become immune to the reality of today's headlines: from terrorism to natural disasters to political upheavals to refugees to disease to nuclear threats to failing economies...and the list goes on. People are thinking and asking, "Is this the end?" Nobody can answer that question specifically. In fact, Jesus warned about setting dates for the end of the age. But this we can say: Never have so many world-level events developed so rapidly and with such catastrophic implications. These events bring to mind the apostle Paul's words about "birth pangs" before the end of the age. In Is This the End? Study Guide, Pastor David Jeremiah looks at ten major developments in America and the world that almost defy imagination. Just a few years ago, nobody could have imagined the things we hear about daily in the news. We need to understand these events: what they are, what the Bible says about them, and how we should respond as followers of Christ. Follow Dr. Jeremiah as he unfolds five developments in America and five developments on the international stage–all of which beg the question, "Is this the end?"

Description : This volume, the first ever of its kind in English, introduces and surveys Greek literature in Byzantium (330 - 1453 CE). In twenty-five chapters composed by leading specialists, The Oxford Handbook of Byzantine Literature surveys the immense body of Greek literature produced from the fourth to the fifteenth century CE and advances a nuanced understanding of what "literature" was in Byzantium. This volume is structured in four sections. The first, "Materials, Norms, Codes," presents basic structures for understanding the history of Byzantine literature like language, manuscript book culture, theories of literature, and systems of textual memory. The second, "Forms," deals with the how Byzantine literature works: oral discourse and "text"; storytelling; rhetoric; re-writing; verse; and song. The third section ("Agents") focuses on the creators of Byzantine literature, both its producers and its recipients. The final section, entitled "Translation, Transmission, Edition," surveys the three main ways by which we access Byzantine Greek literature today: translations into other Byzantine languages during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages; Byzantine and post-Byzantine manuscripts; and modern printed editions. The volume concludes with an essay that offers a view of the recent past--as well as the likely future--of Byzantine literary studies.

Description : The Book of Revelation is a disorienting work, full of beasts, heavenly journeys, holy war, the End of the Age, and the New Jerusalem. It is difficult to follow the thread that ties the visions together and to makes sense of the work's message. In Manuscripts of the Book of Revelation, Garrick Allen argues that one way to understand the strange history of Revelation and its challenging texts is to go back to its manuscripts. The texts of the Greek manuscripts of Revelation are the foundation for the words that we encounter when we read Revelation in a modern Bible. But the manuscripts also tell us what other ancient, medieval, and early modern people thought about the work they copied and read. The paratexts of Revelation—the many features of the manuscripts that help readers to interpret the text—are one important point of evidence. Incorporating such diverse features like the traditional apparatus that accompanies ancient commentaries to the random marginal notes that identify the true identity of the beast, paratexts are founts of information on how other mostly anonymous people interpreted Revelation's problem texts. Allen argues that manuscripts are not just important for textual critics or antiquarians, but that they are important for scholars and serious students because they are the essential substance of what the New Testament is. This book illustrates ways that the manuscripts illuminate surprising answers to important critical questions. We can learn to 'read' the manuscripts even if we don't know the language.

Description : Guiding Gideon chronicles the encounters between Gideon, a young man in his thirties in the midst of crisis, and his spiritual guide, Julian. With Julian accompanying him to attend prayerfully to the life directly before him, Gideon traverses the troubled landscape of his interior life, where he encounters grace, his deepest wounds become "sacred," and he is invited into fuller participation in the kingdom of God. Julian reflects prayerfully on each session, conscious that he is a privileged witness to the restorative movements of the Spirit within Gideon's life and that the same Spirit is forming him in the way of Jesus. Guiding Gideon is for all who desire to become more attentive to their formation in the likeness of Christ. It is also for spiritual guides who want their mentoring, counseling, pastoral care, or spiritual directing to reflect and embody the way of Jesus. Written as a narrative, Guiding Gideon offers prayerful reflection within the context of guiding a fictional pilgrim and also invites readers to witness the formation of a fictional guide. Reflective of the contemplative vision of New Monasticism, Guiding Gideon models a prayer-action praxis inspired by Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.

Description : The writer to the Hebrews itemizes the elements of a firm spiritual foundation. These fundamentals must be built into the foundation of every Christian so he or she will not collapse in the face of life's storms. When Christians are shaky in their beliefs, they become vulnerable in the fight against hell. Yet the enemy, as the psalmist pointed out, is constantly shooting at their foundations. What can they do? They can fortify their foundations, says James W. Goll, one of the most respected leaders in the renewal movement. In the only book/study guide combination on the topic, he lays out the biblical elements of a firm foundation from Hebrews 6, including faith in God, the baptism with the Holy Spirit, resurrection from the dead, and more. His clear, conversational approach equips both new and veteran Christians with the tools they need to establish an unshakable foundation.

Description : Truth is the accurate and complete representation of reality. We do not perceive reality. We only perceive a small fraction of all that is real - a representation of reality. Truth helps us avoid two great errors in life: rejecting truth as error (Type 1 error) and accepting error as truth (Type 2 error). Both types of error can result in adverse consequences to ourselves and to those around us. We can improve the quality and length of our lives by reducing how often we make these errors and how badly we misperceive the truth. We align our lives through trust. We trust that our perception is accurate enough and complete enough that we may align our lives with it and that we will not suffer adverse consequences Our only other option is to trust a guide - and then trust that their perception is accurate and complete enough. We trust our perception of truth, or trust a guide. Jesus sent the Spirit of truth to guide us into all the truth. The Spirit of Truth is unlimited in his perception of all truth: physical - temporary and spiritual - eternal. He is completely trustworthy, faithful, and reliable. He knows the will of God and knows the will of God for us specifically. He knows the path God has for us, what our next step is, and when we are to take it. We must make the choice of who we will trust to guide us into truth: ourselves or the Spirit of Truth.

Description : After seriously want to be liberated from simply accepting moral directives from family, from media, from “one’s group,” from one’s culture –and willing to labor to understand what makes any action morally good or bad., Grisez , a lay moral theologian, will equip you to guide your own journey before and to God. Liberated, you will feel you are creating your own self, that your life is in your hands. Grisez is a sound, conservative Catholic, but creatively independent. Appealing only to reason at first, hence accessible to all people, he focuses on free choice and human fulfillment. A clear criterion of good (morally) and bad (morally) choices is provided. Aware we act immorally because of non-integrated feelings, he articulates ways to avoid doing so. These ways he then transforms for the Christian to follow the way of the Lord Jesus, love becoming the criterion of morally good choices–allowing God, who is love, to co-operate in our choices as you create yourself as a loving self.
