Description : There are approximately 55,000 practicing ob/gyns in the United States. The obstetrics and gynecology residency training authority (the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) has now pushed ambulatory primary and preventative care to the top of its list for residency training. Interest in the area of ambulatory gynecology is not just growing in the field of ob/gyn, however; family and primary care practitioners, emergency room physicians, and advance practice nurses all must know how to diagnose, manage, and treat gynecological conditions. Since office technology has expanded and decision-making has become increasingly complex, physicians need a guide through the endless list of treatment options for commonly presenting gynecologic disorders. Ambulatory Gynecology gives practitioners tools for diagnosis, investigation and management of these disorders, including decision-making algorithms. The text is evidence-based. From endocrine disorders to breast disease, preventative measures for osteoporosis to management of an abnormal pap smear, from adolescent gynecology to menopause, this book is crucial for office-based physicians to feel confident practicing in all areas of gynecology.

Description : This textbook has its ongm in a longstanding international profes sional and personal relationship of the authors. The success of the German edition was a result of the interest of the German authors, Dr. K. Knorr and Dr. C. Lauritzen, in synthesizing basic and clinical information in a textbook, the size and scope of which are appropriate to the modern undergraduate medical student. A unique feature of the volume was the addition of American gynecological thinking by Dr. F. K. Beller, who spent 12 years at New York University before returning to Germany. The English edition, which is aimed at the American medical student, has enlisted the services of Dr. R. M. Wynn, whose academic career has been in the United States, although he is thoroughly familiar with principles and practices of German gynecology. The English edition is not merely a translation of the German text. Rather, it incorporates most of the material, but with judiciOUS deletions, additions, and substitutions it brings the teaching into the mainstream of American medical education. We acknowledge with gratitude the expert editional assistance of Dr. Henriette Knorr-Gartner. Dr. R. Schuh mann and Mr. H. Brandt of Springer-Verlag were responsible for the histological sketches. The late Dr. H. Roemer prepared the section on psychosomatic disorders; Dr. F. W. Ahnefeld assisted in the section on shock; and Dr. H. Breinl helped to prepare the chapter on anatomy in the German edition.

Description : This book covers a broad area-the problems associated with female develop ment-from the appearance of gender abnormalities in the delivery room, through the trials of pubescence, early maturation, and precocious child bearing. Experts from many diverse fields of scholarship have contributed chapters covering a wide range of subjects. The contributors have concentrated on their areas of expertise. The broad range of this book is unique; no other textbook covers as many areas. The diversity of subjects covered will help the reader (gynecologist, pediatrician, nurse, health counselor, social worker, or psy chologist) to understand both the physical and psychological problems which beset the female, from birth to adolescence. Because of the wealth of information presented, we hope that this volume will serve as a reference source and as a basis for further in-depth studies. The editors wish to express sincere thanks for the efforts "above and beyond the call of duty" on the part of many members of our staff. A special thank you to Carrie Marcell R.N., our research nurse and University of Louisville coordinator for this project, for her time and effort in putting up with the vagaries of the editors; and to Betty Jones and Linda Grear for their fine secretarial work. Special recognition is due Sue Koenig, whose patience with us in adapting the text to our word processor made our job a great deal easier.
