101 Tips for Parents of Kids with Diabetes Book Excerpt:

Approximately 208,000 Americans under age twenty have diagnosed diabetes, and the number is growing at an alarming rate. From 2001 to 2009, the number of American children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes rose 23 percent; for type 2 diabetes it rose 21 percent. While scientists and government organizations assess the reasons for the increase, parents are left to deal with its day-to-day ramifications, and to guide their children through the discovery and treatment process.Jeff Hitchcock, the editor of this volume, was in desperate need of advice for how to best support his young daughter after her diagnosis. When he searched for support, he was shocked by how little information existed. So he started his own support group, Children with Diabetes. And now, more than twenty years later, Children with Diabetes has answered more than twenty thousand questions from other parents, gets more than twenty thousand daily hits on its website, and has a highly respected Diabetes Team, a wealth of on-call experts for parents in need of support. In this volume, Jeff has collected a whopping 101 tips for parents. The tips answer questions such as: What does the diagnosis mean? How do I get help? Should I change my child’s eating habits? What does insulin mean, and how is it used? And what should I tell my child’s teacher? For ease of reference, they’re categorized, so answers can quickly and easily be found. They’re also provided in simple, jargon-free, and easy-to-understand language.

For Parents of a Child with Newly Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Book Excerpt:

The experts agree: finding out that your child has type 1 diabetes comes as a shock to most parents. Blood sugar levels, meters, shots, insulin, diet, exercise, hypoglycemia, complications, treatment plans, doctors, family: this is a whole lot of new challenges to cope with. No doubt your doctor and healthcare team have given you a lot of information and guidance about how to be a parent of a child with diabetes. Even with all this information about type 1 diabetes and your child, you are probably still experiencing a high level of anxiety about how best to support your child, both immediately and in the long run. Your concerns, your fears, are "normal." Managing your child's diabetes is not just a medical challenge; diabetes causes severe stresses and strains that tax the psychological and emotional strengths of all those involved. This book provides parents with ten ideas focused on these psychological and emotional issues that ultimately consume a substantial share of your time and effort as a parent in helping your child manage his or her diabetes. These ideas have emerged as a result of listening to scores of parents as they cope with diabetes in their families. As each child is different, as is his or her diabetes, there is no single magic formula for living with diabetes, but we know some things you can expect to encounter as your child begins his or her life with diabetes. Being aware of these ideas may make it more comfortable for you as a parent, in part because you will find you are not alone in having a child with diabetes. There is much good news about the treatment of diabetes, information and tools that will be helpful to both you and your child as you manage this new life challenge! We encourage you to embrace these facts: Nothing you have done as a parent caused your child to get type 1 diabetes. Nothing! Nothing your child has done, or not done, caused him or her to get type 1 diabetes. Nothing!

I Am Ari Book Excerpt:

"I Am Ari" is a short, encouraging, children's book for young children living with Type 1 Diabetes or any child interested in learning more about the disease and what kids living with diabetes go through. This story is suitable for children as young as preschoolers to around 1st-2nd Graders, is an easy to read book, has several pictures/images (one on nearly every page) to keep younger children's interest, and large font for younger age groups to easily see and read. The story is told through the perspective of my 8-year-old daughter with diabetes, "Ari." The main objective is to help encourage children living with Type 1 Diabetes realize that this disease may change their life in some aspects, however, it doesn't change who they are as a person, what they can do, or prevent them from aspiring to reach for their dreams in the future. There are several pictures throughout the book of my daughter. This is to allow the reader to see an actual person with diabetes, close to their own age, and so that they can relate with the main character and not feel so alone in dealing with this disease. The book also briefly describes what Type 1 Diabetes is and how it's managed. This shows the reader what children who have this disease go through every day. This would be a great introductory resource for any child who isn't diabetic but wants a better understanding of what the disease is and what kids with diabetes go through. I hope that your family enjoys this book and it can help your child in one way or another, and if so, be on the look out for more "I Am Ari" titles in the near future. 100% OF THE PROCEEDS FROM THIS BOOK AND ALL FUTURE "I AM ARI" BOOKS WILL BE GOING TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF A DIABETES ALERT DOG FOR MISS "ARI," SO REST ASSURED THAT YOUR PURCHASE IS ALSO GOING TOWARDS A GREAT CAUSE!!!! 40 Healthy Years with Diabetes Book Excerpt:

I have lived forty healthy years with Type 1 diabetes. I wrote this book to let other diabetics know how to live that many years with this deadly disease and be very healthy. I have never had surgery, never had kidney, heart, eye or circulation problems. If I cut my foot it heals like everyone elses. I have perfect 20/20 vision. I was an eight year old boy when I became diabetic. Forty years ago the life expectancy wasnt very good for someone with diabetes. There were other young children from my area that became diabetic about the same time that I did. They have all died. In this book I will tell you how I lived my life differently than those other young children. The reasons why I have been this healthy will surprise you. I wont tell you to go on some crazy diet or anything like that. I will just give you some common sense things that I have done my whole life to stay this healthy with diabetes. I have taken over 36,000 injections of insulin in forty years. I wrote this book to inspire other diabetics or parents of a diabetic child. Diabetes does not have to change your life; it has never stopped me from doing anything.
