Description : "Marvin Lazerson’s new book is exactly what is needed: a readable, cogent explanation of how the U.S. can have the best system of higher education in the world, but also a system that seems to be coming apart at the seams.” —Susan Fuhrman, President Teachers College, Columbia University, President of the National Academy of Education "In prose remarkable for its clarity and analysis remarkable for its fair-mindedness, this volume delivers a penetrating, nuanced account of American universities in the twenty-first century. Blessedly without rant or cant, the book tackles topics that range from the rise of the managerial class to the failed attempts to reform practice in the classroom. It’s a smart provocation—a must-read for anyone who cares about where our universities are heading.” —David L. Kirp, Professor at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley and author of Shakespeare, Einstein, and the Bottom Line: The Marketing of Higher Education "Professor Lazerson gives an insightful account of American higher education based on years of study and first-hand experience. He discusses both the problems and the accomplishment of our universities with equal care and thus, succeeds in providing a useful and illuminating analysis.” —Derek Bok, Harvard University, President-emeritus "Marvin Lazerson’s magnificent book is not only comprehensive, but it is written from an all-embracing point of view: seeing higher education in America as an expression of the American Dream. This book should be on the reading list of all who want to understand America’s actions, role and image in the world today, with and equal emphasis on their successes and the discontents they create.” —Yehuda Elkana, Rector and President-emeritus, Central European University

Description : Based on conclusions of a 1993 meeting of national leaders in higher education (the Wingspread Group on Higher Education), this book charges that higher education is not meeting society's needs and suggests fundamental areas for attention. It sees demographic, economic and technical changes as increasing the importance of good higher education for most Americans. However, a crisis of values, a higher education system that "weeds" out students, trivialized undergraduate education, and growing public concern all signal crises in higher education. The book argues that the United States must educate more people and must educate them better. This task demands new ways of thinking that include consideration of three fundamental issues. First, higher education must take American democratic values seriously as democratic society must have a common ground. Second, the rigors of a liberal education can sustain these values and institutions must focus more on what students learn and achieve by putting students at the heart of the educational enterprise. Finally, higher education must help to create a nation of learners by being engaged more thoroughly in all of the education enterprise. Extensive appendixes include a self-assessment checklist for institutions, a list of members of the Wingspread group, the Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills agenda, and over 100 references. About half the book consists of 32 essays contributed for the meeting. (JB)

Description : In 1977 I knew Tomas Rivera only as a name. I had read his novel, "... y no se lo trago la tierra" and I had talked about his work and career with friends. One cold winter day, after talking to Rolando Hinojosa about a keynote speaker for the First Midwest Latino Conference on Higher Education, I called Tomas and invited him to be that speaker. He accepted. Why did he come to the frozen corn fields of DeKalb, Illinois? He came because he knew the Midwest as a migrant worker. He came because he knew that Chicanos and Hispanics lived and worked throughout the United States. He came because he wanted to reach out to Chicanos and contribute to their life. He came because he knew that the human voice, the personal contact, was magic. He came because he knew the power of words and of communication, and he knew that an individual can make a difference. We are all better because Tomas came to DeKalb, and because he contributed so much. I remember Tomas as a strong but gentle man who loved life and loved people. This volume in honor of Tomas is a small contribution, a small repayment, for all that Tomas gave us. All of the contributors to this special volume of homenaje to Tomas Rivera have their own memories of Tomas. Each has been touched by his life and his works in different ways, yet each remembers. Their contributions to this volume are their way of honoring that memory and that man, Tomas Rivera. -- from the preface by Vernon E. Lattin.

Description : A survey of 72 selected two-year colleges was conducted to gather information on the extent and range of college efforts to improve the quality of the workforce and the efficiency of public and private enterprises. Specifically, the survey requested data on credit and noncredit enrollments; occupational programs (e.g., degree programs and programs awarding credit for work experience, including cooperative education, work study, apprenticeships, and military training); transfer programs; community and corporate economic profiles; military contracts; business/industry/college collaboration; industry-driven courses and instruction; and Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) funded activities. Study findings, based on a 75% response rate, included the following: (1) 47% of the responding institutions served urban areas and 40% served suburban districts; (2) 50% served over 10,000 students; (3) 89.8% of the colleges had cooperative education programs, 34.9% had work study programs, 56.8% offered apprenticeship training, and 56.8% offered nonapprenticeship industrial training; (4) 80% offered between 1 and 20 credits for work-related experience; (5) 31% of the colleges reported that between 1% and 10% of their students transferred to a four-year college; (6) 42% provided formal educational training for military personnel; and (7) 54.5% of the rural colleges used company equipment to provide technical training. Appendixes provide an executive summary of a national survey of college partnerships, a list of respondents, the survey instrument, and a course list. (EJV)
