The Hawks Trilogy Complete Collection Box Set Rebels of Halklyen The God Sword The White Wolf Book Excerpt:

The Hawks Trilogy ★★★★★Three books in one. A page-turning, sword-fighting fantasy adventure for middle grade and up. Book 1: Rebels of Halklyen ★★★★★ A dark sorcerer, a corrupt king and a hidden village of rebels. Assassins are not always the bad guys. In Abbarkon, it is best to keep your head down and your guard up. As long as he can remember, 14-year-old Flint has done exactly that. He ignores both the whispers of a monster named Martokallu and the rumours of a rebel group assassinating high-born dukes. Those stories mean little to him as he washes dishes and scrubs floors. On the one day that Flint breaks his own rule to defend a friend, his master ends up dead. Accident or not, Flint is sentenced to death. Hearing of his exploits, the Hawks rescue him from the executioner and whisk him away to the hidden village of Halklyen. Experts with their blades and bows, the rebels are the true defenders of the kingdom. They give Flint a sword and teach him how to use it. Before long, Flint learns that the dark sorcerer, Martokallu is real. When the Hawks are forced into the open, Flint is ready to join the fight. Will the Hawks be strong enough to win against an army of Martokallu's Followers? Book 2: The God Sword ★★★★★ The dwarves guard a secret. The Hawks must prove they are worthy. The Kingdom of Abbarkon is safe. There is a new king and Martokallu is dead. Or is he? If he returns, the Hawks will need the God Sword. In search of the fabled weapon, Flint and Fleta join the Hawks on a trek through the Dwarven Kingdom of Tsaralvia. Along the way, they discover an unsettling truth: the Protectors of the God Sword do not want them there and they will do everything in their power to stop them. If the Hawks hope to save Abbarkon, they must prove they are worthy of the blade. Book 3: The White Wolf ★★★★★ The Hawks thought the war was over. A mad sorcerer, a barbarian horde and the elven army think otherwise. Thousands of barbarian warriors from the frozen land of Nairt'kun arrive in Abbarkon's north while an elven army prepares to attack from the south. Among the northern raiders is Venadis, a young slave girl. Her masters fear her beast-shifting magic and force her to wear an iron collar. Intent on freedom, she slips away from the blood-thirsty horde and with her healing powers, she earns a place in the Hawks. When Flint, Fleta and the others head south on a mission to assassinate the elven emperor, she goes with them. The elves must be stopped. Will the Hawks get there in time to change the course of the war? Mother and son authors, Paula Baker and Aidan Davies team up to tell the action-packed adventures of the Hawks. Perfect for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Christopher Paolini's Eragon, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter, Darren Shan's Demonata, and John Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice. Dance Lodges of the Omaha People Book Excerpt:

After the Omaha Nation was officially granted its reservation land in northeastern Nebraska in 1854, Omaha culture appeared to succumb to a Euro-American standard of living under the combined onslaught of federal Indian policies, governmental officials, and missionary zealots. At the same time, however, new circular wooden structures appeared on some Omaha homesteads. Blending into the architectural environment of the mainstream culture, these lodges provided the ritual space in which dances and ceremonies could be conducted at a time when such practices were coercively suppressed. ø Drawing on the oral histories of forty Omaha elders collected in 1992, Dance Lodges of the Omaha People provides insights into how these lodges shaped Omaha cultural identity and illustrates the adaptive abilities of the modern Omaha tribe. The lodges replaced the diminished pre-reservation tribal institutions as maintainers of tribal cohesion and unity and at the same time provided an arena for selective acculturation of outside ideas and behaviors. A new afterword by the author highlights advances in research on these unique structures since 1992 and speculates on the connection between these lodges and the spread of the Omaha Hethushka dance across the Great Plains.

Daughters of the Stone Book Excerpt:

Finalist for the PEN/Robert Bingham Fellowship for Writers It is the mid-1800s. Fela, taken from Africa, is working at her second sugar plantation in colonial Puerto Rico, where her mistress is only too happy to benefit from her impressive embroidery skills. But Fela has a secret. Before she and her husband were separated and sold into slavery, they performed a tribal ceremony in which they poured the essence of their unborn child into a very special stone. Fela keeps the stone with her, waiting for the chance to finish what she started. When the plantation owner approaches her, Fela sees a better opportunity for her child, and allows the man to act out his desire. Such is the beginning of a line of daughters connected by their intense love for one another, and the stories of a lost land. Mati, a powerful healer and noted craftswoman, is grounded in a life that is disappearing in a quickly changing world. Concha, unsure of her place, doesn't realize the price she will pay for rejecting her past. Elena, modern and educated, tries to navigate between two cultures, moving to the United States, where she will struggle to keep her family together. Carisa turns to the past for wisdom and strength when her life in New York falls apart. The stone becomes meaningful to each of the women, pulling them through times of crisis and ultimately connecting them to one another. Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa shows great skill and warmth in the telling of this heartbreaking, inspirational story about mothers and daughters, and the ways in which they hurt and save one another.

Curious about George Book Excerpt:

In 1940, Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey built two bikes, packed what they could, and fled wartime Paris. Among the possessions they escaped with was a manuscript that would later become one of the most celebrated books in children’s literature—Curious George. Since his debut in 1941, the mischievous icon has only grown in popularity. After being captured in Africa by the Man in the Yellow Hat and taken to live in the big city’s zoo, Curious George became a symbol of curiosity, adventure, and exploration. In Curious about George: Curious George, Cultural Icons, Colonialism, and US Exceptionalism, author Rae Lynn Schwartz-DuPre argues that the beloved character also performs within a narrative of racism, colonialism, and heroism. Using theories of colonial and rhetorical studies to explain why cultural icons like Curious George are able to avoid criticism, Schwartz-DuPre investigates the ways these characters operate as capacious figures, embodying and circulating the narratives that construct them, and effectively argues that discourses about George provide a rich training ground for children to learn US citizenship and become innocent supporters of colonial American exceptionalism. By drawing on postcolonial theory, children’s criticisms, science and technology studies, and nostalgia, Schwartz-DuPre’s critical reading explains the dismissal of the monkey’s 1941 abduction from Africa and enslavement in the US, described in the first book, by illuminating two powerful roles he currently holds: essential STEM ambassador at a time when science and technology is central to global competitiveness and as a World War II refugee who offers a “deficient” version of the Holocaust while performing model US immigrant. Curious George’s twin heroic roles highlight racist science and an Americanized Holocaust narrative. By situating George as a representation of enslaved Africans and Holocaust refugees, Curious about George illuminates the danger of contemporary zero-sum identity politics, the colonization of marginalized identities, and racist knowledge production. Importantly, it demonstrates the ways in which popular culture can be harnessed both to promote colonial benevolence and to present possibilities for resistance.

From Tolerable to Tempting Book Excerpt:

Another wonderful regency from Ms. Solomon... this time, in the tradition of Abigail Reynolds, a Pride and Prejudice variation that should have you both smiling and weeping. What would happen, one wonders, if Mr. Bennet were to die, leaving Lizzie evicted from Longbourn? What if this happens after she has so forcefully rejected Mr. Darcy? What if Mr. Collins proves insuff erable (no surprise!) and Lizzie is forced to earn her keep? Will her path cross with Darcy's? Unlikely, but not impossible.... Can Darcy ever be absolved of his wicked remark "She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me...?" What of Anne De Bourgh? What luminously cunning scheme is contrived to thwart Lady Catherine? Does Wickham's insidious charm still have consequences? For whom? When does an astonished Lizzy discover that the last man on earth she could ever be prevailed upon to marry is actually-quite sinfully-tempting? ------------- A gifted new author -Melinder Helfer [Romantic Times] on Viscount Victorious A fast paced and entertaining read that will delight readers with it's witty dialogue -Angela Keck [Romantic Times] on A Rag Mannered Rogue
